Which prospect received the most hype/buzz around the NHL world. (After that we will place Slaf, Bedard and Celebrini)

Don't be biased with the player's career. And I'm talking at the draft, not at 16 years old.

So far:

1- Sidney Crosby (136/235 - 57.9%)
2- Connor McDavid (116/138 - 84.1%)
3- Alexander Ovechkin (99/204 - 48.5%)
4- John Tavares (94/155 - 60.6%)
5- Auston Matthews (47/140 - 33.6%)
6- Rasmus Dahlin (44/104 - 42.3%)
7- Steven Stamkos (58/187 - 31,0%)
8- Alexis Lafrenière (38/83 - 45,8%)
9- Nail Yakupov (30/100 - 30,0%)

It’s not MacKinnon. Leading up to the draft he wasn’t viewed as a likely first overall until it was leaked/rumoured that the Avs would be taking a C, either Mack or Barkov. Jones was viewed as the most likely number 1 until really late, plus his connection with Denver was strong. Then eventually it was reported that it would be Mack. At the draft it was a big 4, not Mack being the obvious best player.

To me this is Hughes for sure.

I don't think yak was more hyped than hall, Hughes or Mackinnon. Even though Jones and drouin were neck and neck in terms of hype all of them were projected as much better prospects than yakupov even though he was touted as the next great Russian goal scorer scouts still didn't like him as a bonafide #1 in terms if hype he was lower than Kane and ahead of Johnson and power and maybe hischier since he overtook patrick. Yakupov was head of a very weak 12 draft class which gave the illusion of being can't miss when in reality it was considered one of the weakest classes in the history of the sport RNH was more hyped if I recall

We have to separate 2 things.

Hype is how we are excited about a prospect, non ?
Clear 1st overall can means that the 2nd one is bad, not because the 1st one is so good.

He was though, basically all rankings switched to mackinnon #1 after the mem Cup. He was 8/10 choice for #1 on bobs final ranking. The only reason many people expected the Avs to take Jones was because they were desperate for a D and had Duchene and RoR at centre , but even more because of his Colorado connection and the amount of media hype the story got.

Mackinnon was absolutely seen as the best player heading into the draft and briefly losing His spot at #1 after the wjc. He started #1 on 10/10 scouts and finished the year #1 on 8/10 for Bob which is probably the most valid indicator of who is ranked #1.

Hughes may have been more wire-to-wire #1 but I don't think many GMs would have taken Hughes over Mackinnon if they were in the same draft as prospects. Hype was close for both imo and Hughes may have had slightly more but it's pretty close. I think Mackinnon was a better prospect though and 2013 as a whole was considered better than 2019
