HF Habs: Most disappointing Hughes Acquisition (All Michkov draft talk here)

So many WAY MORE IMPORTANT trades not mentioned.....oh my god you guys...come on...

Nate Schnarr anyone? Geez, big C that never amounted to anything. A guy with a name that I shout hard everytime I sneeze...can't amount ot anything? William Lagesson..HUGE D...again nothing. Nothing. JaKov Novak? Huge forward...Nothing. Filip Cederqvist anyone? How does a player like that with a name like that amount to nothing? Oh and MOST IMPORTANTLY..... Arnaud Durandeau, Nicolas Beaudin, Frédéric Allard, Nathan Légaré...? All those QUÉBÉCOIS guys that because of their ineptitude and non-NHL skills, were unable to make the TVA play by play guys be able to talk about them by saying LE QUÉBÉCOIS 50 times PER GAME, PER NAME????

Unacceptable trades.
Important trades? You have a bizarre definition of important.

Newhook was the only one i didn’t understand. He already traded for Dach to be 2C. What was Newhook’s purpose?
HuGo wanted a 1,2,3, punch of Suzuki, Dach, Newhook….in theory…..sounded awesome to me. Three young, very different looking C’s, that’s a nice structure up the middle! If they had been as good as their potential, we would have beaten The Caps.

It’s been a disaster of a start for Dach!! Newhook is just finding his “fit” so next September all three will be healthy and ready to go. Overall I try to remind myself that rebuilds are an investment for the future.

Cheers

They acquired Newhook for the wing; he's been forced into center just because Dach can't stay healthy.

I don't think he was totally healthy at any point this year, his knee was clearly holding him back.
His dog shit training in the offseason probably held him back the most. Many people here acknowledged that because other players with ACL and MCL tears don't turn that bad for that long when coming back. Then management made it clear that he wasn't prepared well enough. That's 100% on him not taking it seriously enough.

I think Hughes felt team speed was lacking so he picked up a fast player. He hasn't worked out yet, but he's still got a year or two. I don't see him being very useful, but what do I know?

Newhook wasn't traded to be a center.

And it was part of managements push to acquire high upside players that hadn't broken out yet in the NHL to try to speed up the rebuild, and the belief that hockey sense could be taught. The former reason was probably market driven and didn't work out (but didn't set the team too far back). The latter has been kind of true, but nowhere near as much as management probably believed.

But the biggest (and most damning) reason to criticize the Newhook trade is that Hughes was Newhook's agent and probably overvalued him because of that relationship.

Everybody loves the Strome, Reinhart, Seth Jones type of redemption trades. It's always 'why don't we ever do that?' around here but when our GM takes exactly those types of swings on players who have the potential of breaking out in a similar fashion on a similar timeframe, it better work out immediately or its all we read about around here.

Dach might not work out because of a now chronic knee condition which definitely couldn't be predicted. Newhook still might break out, we'll see. But let's talk about it and dunk on the trade every third post why not?

Conversely HuGo better not do nothing this summer or the same spam posters will dunk on him for his inactivity. So we predictably have a situation where HuGo better make trades but they also better work out instantly or this board and fanbase will predictably meltdown. At least the same 5-6 posters will. Grown up children.

As long as they learn from them and it doesn't set the team too far back (like the Drouin trade did), then IDC. All I ask/hope is they learn from what went wrong.

I feel like the Michkov drama died down when we got Demidov , and the drama was replaced by injury worries. Nice to see him play
Did you guys hear something about Michkov, where he was in some trouble with the law recently......an issue with a car accident??

Anyhow, DR is gonna be a good one guys, but patience is required.

The acquisition of Newhook in my opinion was the habs effort to get some under 25 top 6 talent on the roster.

The team really only has Slaf, Caufield, and Nick as top 6 players. Adding Dach, Laine, Newhook was an attempt to fast-track a second line with some potential to not put everything on the former 3's shoulders.

Has it worked out? No, but the attempt is admirable.

You need to think that if those trades dont happen, the top 6 is literally Slaf, Caufield, Nick and no one else for the last three seasons.

The deal they need this offseason, can't be a swing and a miss..............we need a reliable NHL 2C guy........I am thinking they go the route of 1-2 years stopgap type of veteran......ROR type of guy.

The Newhook trade is the only one I consider disappointing. Dach was a calculated risk I thought was worth the gamble given the potential whereas I feel Newhook was predictable given what he was doing in Colorado.

Dach can still be a good 2nd line winger. He has the talent to do it. We've seen it. It's honestly all up to him whether or not he wants to put in the work in the off-season to get himself into the position to achieve that.

If he doesn't start taking his career seriously this summer then it's going to be his last year in Montreal, and likely one of his last few years in the NHL. I'm not writing him off like many here, but this summer and the start to next season is likely make or break for his career and I hope he knows that.

I think he's gotta know by now, after watching what the CH did without him - he has this summer to work his ass off: no partying, no chicks, no drinking. Hes gotta become a machine, stronger, faster and dialed in.

If only he could see the gift he has, maybe he can surprise us in Sept. If not, he's basically kissing away a million$ sports career.. and for what? Going to a cottage to fish? Wake up kid!!!!

A 2nd line winger on a competitive team should at least product 50/55 points at minimum. And getting a ratio +/- wich make sense. With his 22 points and -30. We are far from expecting that , and he remains 24 years old...

To me it mainly depends on if he can get his stride back. Last year, after insufficient work in the offseason by all accounts, he didn't have it.

In the 117 games he's played for us he's produced a pace of 43.5 points per 82 games. So he's not all that far from what you say he should produce, the real question is whether he can be healthy or not, and none of us can answer that.

He’s 16 million dollars richer than I was at his age, not sure why or how money would be a motivator for him. Good for him, I hope he enjoys (I know I would).
