Morgan Rielly

My point is, if he didn't want to go he's contractually allowed to tell Brad "off is the direction you can f***."

He can legally do that, he has that right that's all I'm saying.

Besides Lebrun has already said they aren't going to ask him anyway.

Think the media chatter about Rielly waiving after the season concluded is their way of back channeling it as a possibility, but alas it does not seem to be time for Rielly to leave Toronto yet.

OEL had a few moments this year where he got off a whippy point shot via long wingspan. It was chefs kiss.

I wouldn’t even mind doing 5 forwards again as long as there’s a 3rd guy that can shoot from distance outside of Nylander and Matthews. Park Tavares and Knies by the net or have them rotate through the slot, then have Matthews, Nylander, and forward X rotate between missed coverage in traffic and the point. Like a Tage Thompson or Laine style giant with a big shot and no other redeeming qualities would go a long way here.

Functionally you need a point guy who can open up angles from the point, whether that's an elite line walking defenseman like Quinn Hughes (just an example) or a big wing span guy who has a wider arc for passing, and can change angles on a point shot (just imagine John Carlson or Victor Hedman). So I would work on getting that alpha type D man.

Realistically a Laine does the job for cheaper than you can get a 6’6 D or one of the ~10 smaller D that actually matter offensively. There’s enough lanky artillery piece forwards that you can get for less than half the cost of even a B tier point man like Chychrun. I’d eat the extra shorties if the PP is solved and you don’t have to think about it anymore without spending every future we have left.

Let’s be specific. What’s so horrible about buying him out ?

They would owe him 66% of what they owe him on the contract which is $21M over 10 years which is a drop in the bucket. And their cap hit savings start at almost $6M next season and then are just below $4M for the next four. And the next five seasons after that is where the $2M in dead cap space comes in, but the salary cap will likely be $30-40M higher than it is today and it will be an insignificant number.

And the use of that $21M cap savings over the next five seasons allows them to sign a better defenseman than Rielly currently is, never mind how much he’s going to continue to regress over the next five seasons.

It's a 10 year buy-out I don't really feel like much more than that needs to be said.

Nobody wants a 10 year buy-out

And it’s doubtful that if they did ask him to waive that they would want that information out there when they’re also trying to attract free agents to sign with them.

It actually does though because a full NMC means you can't move him.

You can't trade him, you can't waive him they aren't going to buy him out and pay him for 10 years that's not to happen.

he's got a FULL NMC if he doesn't want to go he's not going
Please provide a list of all the players who had 3+ years left on their deal, and their team clearly wanted to be rid of them and the player just crossed his arms and said "nuh uh, not happening" and they just played out the rest of their deal while the team was powerless to do anything about it.

Retain 1.5 million as a last resort but its a must to move him, Rielly isnt a competitive person, u can see that during wall battles. It can also appear that he accepts losing, to a certain degree, he is use to it and seems far to passive vs getting pissed about the past. Reilly was playing 6th dman minutes in the playoffs during a win over the Panthers, that doesnt happen with the highest paid dman on the team, but thats on Dubas. In the playoffs, Benoit is an easy choice over Reilly, Benoit can keep u on your toes with big hits, isnt scared of physical play. During a strong Panthers push back, Reilly will check out mentally avoid hits, panic and make dumb pinches to compensate which results in odd man rushes the other way. -3 type of night.

Perfectly stated.

We have lots of cap space next year.

Rielly will be on Robidas Island sooner than later.
