Morgan Rielly

Some of you are playing the perfectionism game with Rielly.

We don't know anything. He might be better next year. Maybe he'll be the same.

The same applies to all the other blueliners on the leafs. What guarantee is there that OEL, Tanev, etc. will be just as good next year?

He just wasn’t good this year or last year

Not what we need. Give me a dman that is tough as nails on backend that can fire the puck. Thats what we need, not these small guys that are afraid to mix it up and my 5 year old grandson has a hard shot from the point. Something in the Parayko mold or Hamilton.

How about this:

Vancouver get Reilly
New Jersey get Hughes
Toronto get Pesce or Hamilton

Mix in some pieces here and there from each team and make it happen. This reminds me of the deal back in the day which was a 3 team deal but on forwards side in 1995.

Wendel Clark to NYI
Steve Thomas to NJ
Claude Lemieux to Colorado
Hughes is exactly what we have been looking for for decades.
That's a silly comment .

For fun I checked the buyout calculator and I honestly wonder if he won't waive his NMC if they buy him out.

Would be 5M and change cap savings this season and 3.something next year. Only becomes super costly in 4-6 years when this team should be rebuilding anyways.

This is full leaf googles view. Canucks say no to this and they should. Hughes is way better than Rielly. You aren’t just going to need to mix in some pieces, you will need major pieces.

If Hughes told the Canucks I’m walking and they had no choice to trade someone would offer a better package than Rielly and some pieces.

This is a minority view but I still think he’s salvageable. I said it earlier in the thread but him losing a few pounds might really help in getting back a bit of speed and agility.
I say just tell him to go all offence; if nothing else his point production goes up and he’s easier to move if they decide they really can’t live with having him anymore. I doubt that’s the way Berube thinks though..

I'd like to see him play a full year with Carlo.

Trading Reilly after one bad playoffs with previous 4 good ones is a knee jerk reaction.

They'd be paying him for 10 years, a buyout seems unlikely

Mo is playing around 15 pounds too heavy. He needs to come into camp in better shape cause yeah, a double chin on a professional athlete is not a good look.

Full year of Carlo and more comfort with Chief's system, I'm hopeful he can rebound but it's dicey.

Over 10 years in the league and his defense still hasn't improved. He can't defend a 1 on 1, looks absolutely lost on a 2 on 1, refuses to clear the front of the net, and he won't throw a hit despite being well over 200 lbs.

He's not worth his cap hit.

11th in scoring amongst all Dmen over the last 4 years including this year and a player who appears to increase offensive production come playoff time absolutely will get offers from other teams for his full cap hit, if he was made available..

the biggest issue with us moving Mo is that we were already one of the worst defenses in terms of offense in the league and removing Mo makes that significantly worst. so if you remove him who are we replacing him with?

Reilly for karlson? We need a ppqb.

Rielly for Kreider. We need a top 6 LW but would there be too many cooks in the net front pp?

Rielly for zibby? Big contract for big contract

I would hope that despite a NMC in this contract that BT would look at the options to deal Morgan Rielly away.

The fact that Leafs felt the need to go with 5 forwards at the expense of Rielly that suggests an upgrade is needed here..

BT also likes Big. Mean and Mobile and Rielly does not fit that bill.

It is so relieving to see everyone is finally seeing how terrible Rielly is.
I never loved him or thought he was anything close to a 1D, but this playoffs really opened my eyes.

I always just focused on the core 4 forwards and their mental midgetry and sacklessness but holy mother of god this guy is actually my #1 focus/target for excommunicating (Marner's already left in my brain, total nonfactor in my thought process for 25-26)
After this POs watching him be terrified, standing still, and being the polar opposite of a puck moving dman, I would employ every strategy possible to convince him to leave like they eventually did with Kadri to Calgary. I actually don't think his contract is horrendous, it's probably quite fair for a ~50 pts "top pair" D, but no one has failed as much or as hard as he has for so long and the culture shock movement needs him as its talisman.

I agree, Rielly really needs to take his poor defensive abilities elsewhere. If you're going to mention Kadri, at least get your facts straight. Kadri was disposed of in a trade to the Colorodo Avalanche, not to Calgary.

Kadri actually vetoed a direct trade to Calgary. The Calgary trade would have been better than our Leafs getting Kerfoot and Barrie !!!

Rielly has always been terrible defensively and that won’t work In Berube’s system. He was even bad last season with Keefe as the coach. Also his cap hit is about twice as much as the players you mentioned and comparing Rielly to Tanev is a joke.
