Morgan Rielly

I'm fine to trade or buy out Rielly. He no longer does the job of a #1 offensive defenceman. I made many posts this last season about how Toronto really needs to add a #1D. I even posted that I'd love to add Seth Jones, then lo and behold he is part of the team that eliminates us.

But you can't do 1 without the other. You can't ditch Morgan and just have a bunch of 2nd pair guys left on the team. I know Mo wasn't a #1 anymore anyway. But that's one of the reasons for the team's failure. Get a proper #1 who can handle big minutes and the powerplay.

With the money saved from Marner, it should be possible.

Reactions: JT AM da real deal
OR get all the Hughes brother to Toronto. Those boys spent more time than any of us at the SBA
More of the same if we get the Hughes here. Not my cup of tea. Just another Marner and Reilly!!!!

Would definitely rather have bigger grittier skilled guys to replace Marner and Reilly. Not the same types of problems.

Quinn is a Top 3 Dman in the League.
Not what we need. Give me a dman that is tough as nails on backend that can fire the puck. Thats what we need, not these small guys that are afraid to mix it up and my 5 year old grandson has a hard shot from the point. Something in the Parayko mold or Hamilton.

How about this:

Vancouver get Reilly
New Jersey get Hughes
Toronto get Pesce or Hamilton

Mix in some pieces here and there from each team and make it happen. This reminds me of the deal back in the day which was a 3 team deal but on forwards side in 1995.

Wendel Clark to NYI
Steve Thomas to NJ
Claude Lemieux to Colorado

Rielly has low hockey IQ...pinches at the worst times wanting to be the hero, and can't defend a 2-on-1. Man, what a move by Florida to snatch up Seth Jones.
It was always funny listening to people arguing about what a "high IQ" Rielly had based on little more than his ability to speak well in interviews. Glad to see people can finally recognize and admit how clueless in defensive coverage he's always been.

OR get Meier from NJ and sign Ekblad in the off season along with Bennett

Meir is grossly overpaid at 8.8 million per for the next 6 yrs. Unless NJ is willing to eat 25% of the salary then I am not interested. Would rather have the D coming back. Shit I would be willing to take Brendan Dillion and other prospects\picks to get rid of Reilly

Lmfao firstly rielly isn't worth any of those guys and in your proposal your going to get a significant inferior dmen to Hughes because he isn't strong? Man I have a bridge to sell you

So Vancouver gives up the best young defenseman in the world and gets back Reilly?

It is so relieving to see everyone is finally seeing how terrible Rielly is.
When he lost his wheels last year it became pretty obvious to all of us .. but i told all you guys he would be out of da league roughly 2 years after he lost his wheels as he has no defensive game to fall back on .. i think a buyout is what will occur .. but hopefully some idiot GM will take him off our hands .. im dreaming ok .. it is sad for me as da guy has great leadership skills but bottom line you gotta be able to play

His terrible defense is the reason he has to go. Defenseman who can’t defend don’t belong on a team that wants to be a cup contender. Especially poor defenders making $7.5M AAV. He’s not even good enough to play on the PP? His terrible pinch was the reason for the Panthers first goal in game 7 and his poor dzone coverage a couple more. Just like his terrible defensive effort in OT last year in game 7 against the Bruins cost the Leafs that series. Some people act like he’s Cale Makar when in fact he’s closer to Tyson Barry.
Yeah but also rewind in your mind all the catastrophic breakdowns Rielly was involved with that resulted in a turning point moment in the playoffs against the Leafs.

Who was dozing as Pastrnak scored his OT winner? Rielly.

Who was involved in 2 random deflections in Game 3 that gave Florida life? Rielly.

Who got beat by Seth Jones to open the festivities in Game 7 and finished with a -3? Rielly.

He’s a low compete exploit. Nevermind the marginally okay playoff scoring numbers.

the Pastrnak OT goal imo was just as much Marner's fault he was still on the defensive side of David as late as our own blue line and let him skate right past him.

but regardless of that you two seem to completely ignoring the fact that I have already said he wasn't good this year for some strange reason. so trying to argue that same point is not convincing me of anything. however I'm not looking at this last year. one year doesn't make or break a player imo. I've watched a guy whose not the greatest Defensively but has excelled offensively from the defensive position which you need to win in the NHL, and other then Rielly we have no one else capable of even putting up 35 points let along 60 which Rielly had 58 in 72 games in 23/24 season. now you also cannot win the Cup without guys who are capable of joining the rush, be a quality player in the transition game and produce offensively from the defense and if you remove Rielly from a D-core that was already one of the worst at getting offense from the defense were no where. so unless were trading for a guy like Werenski/Dunn/Hughes/Makar/Jones/Dahlin or whoever can match Rielly on these aspects, which imo will be extremely difficult to accomplish. no we shouldn't move on and I'm willing to give him one more year to show if he can bounce back before I'm ready to move him for whatever we can get back.

I wonder if he would waive for team like Pittsburgh with the Dubas connection? They're going to move on from Karlsson but their LD is absolutely awful.

Blake Lizotte would be fine by me but if we could get more, even better.

He was terrible last year and quite frankly has always been terrible defensively. I hated the 8 x $7.5M contract Dubas gave him with a full NMC the moment it was announced. My comments have little to do with his play just this year which has unbelievably regressed even further. We obviously see the player quite differently.
