The Rielly-Carlo pair collapsed at the most important moment. No other way to put it. We just can’t win when the highest paid d-man is a -3.
I like Rielly as a person and will always cheer for him, unlike the two bozos Mitch and Auston, but yeah he needs to go. I do wish him well and think he has the attitude to bounce back, but stuff like this has happened way too much with him, he probably could use a fresh start for himself.
In my post history, I've been saying this exact same thing since he still had 2-3 years left on his 5 million/year contract and that Dubas should've traded him before his NMC kicked in for the last year of that contract. Have always said that if Rielly was your top pairing Dman playing the most minutes that the Leafs would never be going far in the playoffs.

I think you could probably persuade him to waive at the 2029-2030 TDL to send him to a contender as a 35 year old. Retain 25-50% of his final year salary and squeeze a 3rd rounder out of him.

Rielly used to compete but either his body won't let him do it anymore or his heart isn't into it anymore.

he's a very old 31 - not just physically, but mentally. He has gone through 12 years of this shit
I’m sorry but he can’t have 6 good games a year for that price. He was probably our worst defenseman for a good chunk of the season and this series.
Fact of the matter is he is supposed to be a puckmoving defenseman, that’s what we drafted him for. He was drafted at 6’1” 200lbs which was already stocky, but this can be excused as he was marketed to be a gym rat and he was an excellent skater. Since then he has gained 25lbs, weighs as much if not more than Knies, and is now our slowest defenseman that can barely pivot or transport the puck north.
I’m not sure what happened. There’s behind the Leaf videos of him talking about his love for junk food. There’s the Pizzaville sponsorship. There’s videos of him saying he likes to eat chocolate chip cookies before games. Whatever it is, he let himself go. Now he’s overweight (Kessel territory) and a liability.
Edit: did more digging into the weight and he’s tied for 2nd in heaviest Leaf (with Knies) behind Anthony Stolarz. So he’s heavier than Tanev, Benoit, and Carlo among others….. WHY!?!?

Nobody showed less poise and readiness to start that game than Reilly. He's was absolutely awful every single play and action he took, was terrifying to watch. You'll never win with that guy back there, braindead, useless, soft are kind descriptors. He was last in D icetime Game 6, probably why we looked so good.

Treliving or whoever the next GM is needs to make Rielly as uncomfortable as possible and force him to waive his NMC. Get ruthless like Vegas. This team doesn’t have any puck movers after Mo but for Christ’s sakes we can’t rely on Rielly going forward.
Only way to do that is send him to Marlies after camp .. eventually he will figure it out .. he was a PASSENGER last night .. and 2 of key goals against were totally on him .. hopefully new hockey guy can trade him and get a pick back

Even if he agrees there is not a single team that would want him. He is bad at literally everything. Can’t skate, can’t shoot can’t defend, zero IQ he is so dumb and completely useless. Only option is to buy him out.

One issue could also be that Mccabe-Tanev-Benoit-Carlo are 10-25 pts Dman. I'm all for defending first, but when you hit playoffs time and powerplay opportunities are scarce, you need a dman or 2 to be able to create offensives opportunities out of nothing.
I dont think Reilly or OEL can do that at that stage of their career.
On a side note, Benoit was really good and should maybe be looked as a no.4-5 instead of borderline 6.

Morgan Rielly literally trades on being a good normal dude with some minor playoff pop in a room led by a boy band that's even worse in the playoffs.
The guy is out of shape and came to play Game 7 like someone trying out Tough Mudder for the first time. Completely gassed at the 18 minute mark, 2 minutes into the first period.
The man weighs 225 pounds and I don't think you'll find any game footage of him making a hit, winning a one on one battle or even being able to clear the net front or pin a guy along the boards.
