Player Discussion Morgan Geekie

He's had the worst plus/minus for the Bruins in the playoffs twice, including last season.

Considering how good the Bruins were during Jake's time here, his plus/minus was never really good.
I was talking about regular season, which he had one minus season, and it was a -1, but that's alright you can twist it around anyway you want.

As I said, considering how good the Bruins were during Jake's time, his plus/minus ratings were really below average.

He had a +26 in 2022-23. Sounds great, but that was only 11th on the Bruins.

Jake's best was actually his rookie season, a +13 for 8th best on the team.

He also had a +1 and a +2 season, both far down compared to the rest of the team. Last season's +4 also left him behind most of his teammates. 2021-22 he had a +6 which was 10th on the team.

So, upon a closer look, no twisting around at all.

You did twist it around, but I am not a solid plus/minus guy anyways so enjoy yourself.

General managers must love when a player scores 30+ goals with 21.6% shooting percentage during a contract year.

Wonder if someone will offer sheet him…

Debrusk's -14 is 2nd worst on the Canucks.

Only Broeser (-25) is worse.
+/- is too contextual a stat to be used for anything other than general trends. Good defenseman on bad teams will eat minuses more because the team sucks. Guys who get less ice time are less likely to be negative because they don't get exposed enough. Bad defenseman on good teams will be inflated (i call this the Jeff Schultz effect) etc etc.

Look at our own team. Pasta despite being far and away the best player on the team finished even on the year. He was so good offensively and while not being a selkie winner defensively, happened to be on the ice for a shitload of goals. The majority of which he had no part in causing (especially on the power play given you get a minus if you get scored on shorthanded)

Looking at Vancouver, the +/- tells me exactly the same as everyone else has been saying; they had a really weird season;

- Four of their top 6 defenseman are +. Hughes at +3, Pettersson at a +9, Hronek at +3 and Myers at +2

- All of their major forwards are minus except Puis Suter at 4+

You can't really draw anything from that. +/- in a lot of situations can just as easily be attributed to lack of ability to score rather than just being bad defensively.

For a team that struggles with finishing, Geekie has evolved into, at least, a B+ finisher. It doesn't matter if he can't drive a line by himself. The modern history of the NHL is littered with high output passenger guys like Geekie may well be if he's turned a page, figured stuff out and can be consistent. (or he could be another Zack Hyman)

If we get a similar 4 years out of Geekie, that Edmonton got from Hyman, I'd be over the moon....

So do you give him a 300 % raise, or give him a prove-it bridge deal?

A lot of first time 30 goal guys this year. I’d like to see a few years of this before I hand him $$$$. Bridge deal for me.

Good GM’s sign players early. I know it’s a tough call but we could have had him at a great price after July 1 last year. Now we will pay.
