Friedman on the 31 thoughts podcast doubles down in the younger names that have been rumored so far as in Rocky Thompson, Leaman, Lambert, Van Ryn.

Says he’s not sure Van Ryn would be interested, sounds like speculation. Was asked about Stillman, says he’s hearing he’ll get a coaching gig, just “not yet.”

bummed we don’t seem to be considering Gallant or BB.

They likely don't want to come to a rebuilding team and the money is going to be mediocre. The names tell me they are looking for their D.J Smith. A guy who doesn't mind stewing in irrelevance for a few years but can keep the team together and moving upward.

This. It's such a small bump, less than the cost of a fourth liner. Tocchet was looking for a raise so it's even less of a bump, then you add in that salary demands will naturally be lower because of the pandemic. We've added all this other shit like the goaltending department and spent pretty close to the cap so I don't know why we'd go cheap at head coach. Also, how come we had expensive management (Maloney and Tippett) when we had no owner but now that we have a multi-billionaire as owner we would go cheap in this area?
If you want to play with the big boys, act like the big boys.

Torts got $2.5 4 years ago or so, after a year in Vancouver that didn't go well. He was kind of down when he signed it. Now the going rate is $4-5 mill and at least 3-4 years for Torts. A bigger market can pay that. I would hire Torts. But, I also don't think BA will hire a coach that is kind of above him and thinks so independently. The more I think about it, the more I think its somebody younger that costs less, and would look up to BA, that isn't Torts.

I would like to see Doan assist under Tippett or even better Trotz for a few years, then come back to coach the Yotes right as their talent starts to mature. I got to sit down with Tippett once in the hotel bar across from the Edmonton barn and learned more about hockey in 30 minutes than I had in my entre life. The man is brilliant and very personable.

I'm thinking that we get a young coach to nurture the baby talent, and then when they are ready we choose someone to coach them to the next level. This is sort of what the Bulls did with Collins and Jackson.
I think DT needed to spend more time with you.:)

I fully expect BA to go the cheap route. I fully expect the same result.

I expect the cheap route too, it has more risk for sure. We could find the right guy ready for the next step, its like 50/50 success rate versus 75/25 with a vet coach. Now I do think RT was a pretty poor coach. TB and AZ, he didn't have one season where you could say his teams over achieved. There was no flash of excellence? Any coach BA picks is likely a bit better anyway, but we shall see.

Like they say, bullshit baffles brains. Let's see who BA picks but I expect to hear a lot of bullshit, and the majority on these boards will be saying "great choice" because we are all homers.:)

Probably better to wait and see who Armstrong actually interviews before we get so emotional over this. I think we'll have a clearer picture of what he's looking for when we see the list.

Will we see a list?

Fischer was Thompson's best forward in 15/16, followed by Logan Brown.

40-50 for 90 points in 66 games, +35

I think we are more so going young than cheap. When the season starts, Boudreau will be 66, Tortorella 63, and Gallant 58. How much shelf life is there?

Five oldest current NHL coaches:

Bowness, 66
Quenneville, 62
Sutter, 62
Ruff, 61
Tippett, 59

It signals a rebuild to me where they won't give a shit about the first two years so long as the effort is there and guys are progressing. It's going to take a younger, hungrier coach to put up with that. Those just also happen to be cheaper than proven commodities.

All but confirmed. Wow, BA letting it all out here.
