Not sure I see the sharks moving from Mikael, think they should extend him.
Ideally, they rent him for a solid return and sign him in July but that doesn't happen much at all. Granlund may not want to extend here because we're not exactly close to being a playoff team yet.
Understood, just think he fits the two young guys very well going towards the next few years.
Montreal should not be spending assets for rentals this year.
I understand where your coming from. The pieces I put in Kapanen and a 2nd equals a mid-1st. Many teams might be cautious on Granlund because his history. He has always been a good player, but stillborn baby and divorce made a really bad impact on his career. Now he plays the best hockey I`ve seen and I`ve followed him for years.

He also has 1 shorthanded goal and 7 more points than the next guy on the team. Plays C/W and any situation.
Well, I suppose he could be extended for 2-4yrs quite cheap? He has played the best hockey in his career for the last 1,5yrs and I actually believe Habs could get a good Top6 with him.

Sharks could probably use a defender prospect instead of Kapanen, but I don't think acquiring Granlund makes sense for the Habs.
Habs need a 2C badly. Dach hasnt been it. I believe Granlund and Laine could be a very good pairing on the second line. Granlund has always been a superb passer and Laine a scorer. It`s a pretty good match

Value is fine, just don't really need/have room for Kapanen. We have a ton of forwards around his age coming up.

This doesn't make sense for SJ. Granlund has been great for them this year as a tank commander, maybe they ship him off at the deadline, but they need guys like him and toffoli to help out the kids and do some of the heavy lifting still for the sake of the young kids development, also MTL isn't making playoffs this year so this is just a waste of assets for them unless granlund resigns long term and continues to produce, which i doubt he would in MTL given where he'd most likely slot in the lineup

It's not easy to establish players value comes the TD.
But Granlund doesn't look like a style of player that is very sought after comes the TD...
Yes he produces points this year but he's been very inconsistent throughout his career.
Plus he's small, physically weak and not very gifted in what it takes in terms of playoff style of play.
I could be surprised if he returns a late 1st, but I wouldn't bet my house on that.
A (early) 2nd + a good (not great) prospect or a young NHL player would be my guess..

Yup. At most flip guys on expiring contracts, straight up, to see if there's a fit before extending, but expending assets without knowing if someone will want to extend isn't going to do much of anything for the rebuild. This might not work as SJ fans seem to see no value in Dvorak, so maybe there's no deal here.

Habs do not want rentals. I could see them trading assets but it would be for youngish guys who are a better age fit and who are locked up for 2+ years.....

This deal is actually thought to be Granlund with an extension. The guy has been almost PPg in SJ for 1,5yrs. No-one else on the team is close. He is paid 5M/yr and could be extended quite cheap. He is what Montreal needs - a pass-first 200ft player, who actually can be used on either wing or center. Also plays PK and PK. One of the best passers in the game. Perfect for either Laine or Caufield.
If Granlund wants to sign a cheap extension to play for a rebuilding team, the Sharks will extend him. I expect Granlund will want to chase a cup, money, or both and the Sharks will sell him at the deadline to the highest bidder.
I agree it's not easy but if you're in the Sharks' position, the only thing that makes sense to do is to hang on to Granlund until the trade deadline or until someone offers a 1st round pick. That 2nd round pick based deal will be prevalent out there. Lots of teams will do that. Until a team gives the Sharks a reason to pull the trigger now, why would they?

He's already 32 though, and Montreal's rebuild isn't close to the point where adding 32 year olds makes sense. If he badly wants to play in a hockey market and will sign for 2-3 years at a reasonable (ie, similar to current) deal, maybe something is possible.... but I'm thinking Kapanen will likely be better in 2 years anyways (not because Kapanen is a sure thing, but because Granlund will be reaching the age where players drop off, sometimes suddenly)

how does adding a soon to be 33 year old C who hasn't scored more than 13 goals in 4+ years help the habs - who are in a rebuild?
And habs are adding a high 2nd AND a legit C prospect in Kapanen.
Hughes would never touch this imo
He's not what montreal need nor are they extending a guy till he's 38.
They could just resign Evans, who's 5 years younger and probably cheaper

Nah you shouldn't add Olyvor Keponain in a trade for some rental, he might become a good NHL player.
