I would add some sandpaper to the current lineup. one or maybe 2 of Carrier, Duhaime, Joshua, Blais, Martin or O'Brien. Olivier would be nice also but he's not UFA, maybe we can trade for him.

nothing serious can happen until we have Gallagher/Anderson/Price (yes LTIR but it still has an impact on roster building in the offseason) on the books
They are ON the books so HuGO can get serious?

I think you meant to say off the books.

He’s going to ask for term - I wouldn’t commit more than 2-years

If we offer 2, he will never sign. We have to live in reality. To get someone, it has to hurt no matter what to get them. It's gonna be 4 years minimum. And I would be fine with that. The guy is not close to be finished.

But 2-years buys time for this years 1st rounder to become NHL ready - be it Demidov, Eiserman etc

This summers UFA signing IMO should be viewed as:

- boosting Dach & Newhook w veteran presence to push their limits & in turn generating additional team offense to support Suzuki line

AND

- being a transitionary 2-year move for this years pick to cultivate & become NHL ready

nothing serious can happen contention-wise until we have those terrible contracts is what i meant
$17M free space this offseason

Dvorak + Armia will come off the books after 24-25 season, that $7.5M will go to Slaf

Savard’s $3.5M + Evans $1.7M will go towards Guhle’s deal w Beck slotting in as 4C

After 25-26 Matheson’s $4,875M frees up

After 26-27 Gallagher & Anderson’s $11M frees up

And oh yeah within 2-years the cap will skyrocket to $100M, especially w Utah coming on board

Cap space is not a hinderance in the bit for next 3-4 years

Dvorak + Armia will come off the books after 24-25 season, that $7.5M will go to Slaf

Plus $4.2M of retention

Savard’s $3.5M + Evans $1.7M will go towards Guhle’s deal w Beck slotting in as 4C

After 25-26 Matheson’s $4,875M frees up

We'll use that for other good players or extend him.

The players I'm about to name all vary in quality overall, but I think the common trait they have is key to our progression:
Stamkos, Perry, Monahan, Toffoli etc

These are all skilled vets who know how to make great decisions with the puck. They have poise and experience, and putting a player like that on the PP would really open things up. I don't know if we sign one of the guys I mentioned, but someone in that vein would be the exact kind of vet that will rub off on the young guys

I want us to get Marchessault badly. Sure he's older than the rest of the squad but he would bring so much damn offensive leadership. We're not talking about making a big trade to compete like crazy. Just adding a player so we can get to the next step. With Dach as well returning next year we would challenge for a playoff spot for sure.

Also an all new fourth line would be cool. Olivier, Carrier and maybe getting Roy from Vegas cause we need a quality center as well. (Jesus I know they are all french but I swear I didn't mean to lol )

And trading Primeau and get Varlamov as a solid vet to second Monty.

No way would I add marchessault. He's the type of player you add right when we're looking to go for the cup. We're trying to approach playoff contention next year. Marchessault will be obsolete and locking up a spot by the time we really need to perform. Small, old, just getting off a career UFA year goals wise while playing on a stanley cup contending roster? No way. Recipe for disaster given what his asks will be.

that Newhook deal was gross overpayment.

The best thing to do is continue to force other GMs to unload their costly mistakes, as the Habs have room to absorb the contracts and pile up on picks.

I don't think so at all.

The 40 years from 1976 to 2015, the median pick 31 produced about 10 career points. Georges Laracque was the second most productive pick 31 and Tyler Pitlick 3rd.

But pick 31 was maybe unusually bad.

For pick 37, the median is about 18 points, and only 8 players have more career points than Newhook so far at age 23.

Gross overpayment? That's a gross distortion.

After having to endure the mistake of signing Gallagher to a grotesque long term contract you would think that most Montreal fans would be adverse to signing any player on the downside of his career.

The amount is not as important as the term. Older guys need very short term. Especially forwards.

Would I take Crosby on a year-to-year basis like Lidstrom did with Detroit? Yes, but I doubt he wants that, and no way we should give Crosby 4 years for example.

Stamkos, max two years. Same with Marchessault.

1000% right.
It's not about money, it's about chairs. We have a lot of young players who need serious auditions in the next few years and it would be a damned shame if they were blocked by useless placeholders like Anderson and Dvorak.

Now that Alzner is off the books, why not go on a shopping spree and sign Mantha to honor Denis Villeneuve? ;)

Which FWD prospects need auditions & will potentially be blocked? Dvorak, Armia & Evans are entering final year, Gallagher & Anderson have 3-years left. Habs have at most 4 potential F in the AHL pipeline and that’s probably stretching it - Beck & Tuch IMO are the only two that should crack the NHL lineup in the next year

Marchesseault is like Pavelski in Dallas. These guys are aging very well and keeps producing. Find better reasons to NOT sign Marchesseault.
