Proposal: Montreal has so much cap space they could afford to take on Lucic if it means getting Puljujarvi

Lucic has to waive his NMC and from what I understand the only two places he doesn’t want to play are Vancouver and Montreal.

If they have so much cap space why don't they sign a big fish UFA?

6m+ Poolparty's new contract
vs
8m UFA

I'd take the UFA over Pool personally. At least use the cap space on someone like Ryan, who has less term. Or get an asset to buy out Reimer.
They tried, but Tavares declined to meet with them.

Montreal
It is known that Montreal has a lot of cap space but especially with a rising cap the amount of loose cash they could have lying around is so high that I could see them taking on Lucic if the Oilers make it worth their while (i.e. Puljujarvi). I think the Habs could even send a solid forward back in return to compensate their loss (maybe Byron or Armia?) along with picks.

Even keeping some big contracts that could be replaced from within (Tatar $4.8M, Shaw $3.9M, Byron $3.4M) and giving big raises to Domi, Kotkaniemi, Gallagher and Mete AND acquiring a dman to the tune of $4M or $5M AND accounting for an Alzner buyout, Montreal would still have the cap space to acquire Lucic's contract in it's entirety (no retention from Oilers).

Do you believe the Habs could realistically acquire Puljujarvi by taking on Lucic and what kind of return would the Oilers agree to? Keep in mind Claude Julien loves Lucic and they have won together. Claude Julien could be able to re-launch Lucic's career.
1) are actually serious in proposing montreal gives up byron or armia in any Puljujarvi / lucic deal? that's massively absurd
2) been watching a lot of lucic lately and he's absolutely done. his decision making is putrid. he's basically a 4th line banger now. i don't see any way he's 'revived' unless he loses lots of weight and even then i question his hockey IQ now.
3) do you watch the way habs play now? they're a top 5 speed team in NHL. no place for him. none. Claude or not. This is strict buyout if he's traded for

I'd do this trade for sekera but not lucy. He's hated more then ben ladin in Montreal and with that cap hit and term... yuck.

Not 100% sure how the rfa groups work, capfriendly says group 2 and 4 rfas can be offer sheeted, what group is Puljujarvi? Could the Habs simply offersheet him in the offseason?

Offer sheets worth $1,339,576 - $2,029,659 would mean we'd have to give up our 3rd round pick. Thats much better then taking on Lucy contracts. Would also see the Habs as quite apealing to him with all the young Fins.

i know leafs fans like to bring up this burn a lot. just a reminder that plenty of UFA's have refused to meet with leafs, and i'd hazard to guess if they had remained garbage and their 10 year tank was incomplete, there'd be no tavares

No worry. The way he is playing right now, no team in the NHL would want his service.

Sekera isnt so bad. He'd be an upgrade on reilly imo and hes had injury prob so that cap may just be relocated to ir anyways.

He’s damaged goods. If he is not on ltir, he is a really bad capdump.

Habs don’t touch that.

JP is following Yak’s path to bustville. No interest whatsoever.

I don't even know if Montreal would trade for those two without trading anyone back. The Oilers will have to give up a lot to a team for them to take on the Lucic deal.

Lucic stays in Edmonton until after July 1st 2020 when his signing bonus is paid out. Edmonton is in no position paying up to unload his contract. The Oilers need to be building a team, not stripping it down.

Once Lucic's 2020 bonus is paid he's left with 10 mil in salary and bonuses for 3 years with a 6mil cap hit. Pretty nice savings for a cap floor team.

At this point dumping talent or prospects just to unload a bad contract is just more bad asset management. Oilers can no longer afford to do this. 3 1/2 years of Chiarelli is some of the worst asset management in the history of the NHL.

The Oilers are in it for the long haul. Gotta just bite the bullet. Lucic isn't going anywhere.

Bergevin will likely never be able to show his face again in Montreal if he trades for Lucic. Especially after acquiring Dale Weise.

It'd be worse than bringing in Manning to Edmonton while McDavid is on that team.

I bet if Chiarelli gets another job Lucic will go to wherever that team is.

This.

They would be far better suited just making a run at Stone or something.

Why?

Why not throw a 8-10M$ @ Stone or Panarin in the summer and keep let the Oilers get rid of that putrid contract?

The Habs don't really have that much space for next season, middle of the pack. Most teams with less space are significantly better. I'd stay away from Lucic's contract if I were Bergevin.

I just don't think Puljujarvi is worth taking on Lucic's hit. I don"t think he has a lot of value. At this point I feel he is a reclamation project. He has 9pts in 44 games this season, he may have talent and he may be skilled but taking Lucic back is an absurd expectation.
