He told Dany Dubé that he plays with a shorter stick now and he made that change recently. It definitely seems to make a difference.

Nice tidbit of info, his stick handling in tight spaces seems much better lately.

That means what, the "window" opens up when Weber's 35, Petry and Price 33... then just a few years later we'll need to find a new #1D, #2D and #1G ?

damn! better start praying now, hope we make it to the SCF at least once before these guys are gone one way or another.

I'd say, at best, the window opens up in 3 years, the first year that Seattle is playing in the NHL, and can last 4 years.

Kotkaniemi has turned 21 and will contribute through the window through 25.
Gallagher is 29 and will contribute through 33.
Tatar is 31 and will contribute through 35.
Domi is 26 and will contribute through 30.
Drouin is 26 and will contribute through 30.
Danault is 28 and will contribute through 32.
Poehling is 22 and will contribute through 26.
Byron is 32 and will contribute through 36 as a role player.
Suzuki is 22 and will contribute through 26.
Romanov is 21 and will contribute through 25.
Mete is 23 and will contribute through 27.
Juulsen is 24 and will contribute through 28.
Brook is 22 and will contribute through 26.
Fleury is 23 and will contribute as a depth D until 27.
Weber is 36 and will contribute through 40 until the end of his contract, with a shifting role.

Petry, I trade for a Brodie on the left side who is a little younger and will be 31, contributing through 35.

Shaw is out of the picture, hopefully traded and not retired because of concussions.

Price will be 34 and contributing through 38, perhaps as a backup in the latter years, depending on his play and that of Lindgren, Primeau or whomever?

After that solid 4-yr window, the remaining players will be:

Kotkaniemi, 25
Domi, 30
Drouin, 30
Poehling, 26
Suzuki, 26
Romanov, 25
Brook, 26
Juulsen, 28
Mete, 27
Fleury, 27
Primeau, 26
Lindgren, 32

Players like Ylonen (26), Ikonen (26), Olofsson (25) and Harris (25) could have graduated with the team at that point. Beyond that, who knows who we will have drafted.

But, a strong and young enough C-Line of:

Kotkaniemi (25)
Poehling (26)
Domi (30)
Olofsson (25)

will be a strong base to build from towards another window. Drouin (30), Ylonen (26), Ikonen (26), Suzuki (26) can bring skill to the wing on the top-6 as well going forward.

Drouin and Domi could be contributing for a couple of years on the next window at a Cup run, provided that MON keeps drafting well and developing those prospects well.

Primeau (26) and Lindgren (32) could be a tandem in front of the Habs' net.

IMO, from what we know and how scattered those players are, we'd be in pretty good position. Gallagher, at 33 and Danault at 32, when the initial window is closing, could garner a decent return, still, via the trade route and help supplement the lineup towards the pursuit of the next window.

Weber (40) and Price (38) will surely retire at the end of our first window. Tatar (35) and Byron (36) would be finished and latter draft picks in return would be all that we could hope for if they hadn't plainly retired themselves as well.

Calculate three more years to retool and the players that we know about now still around for the second window would be:

Domi (33)
Drouin (33)
Kotkaniemi (28)
Poehling (29)
Suzuki (29)
Ylonen (29)
Ikonen (29)
Olofsson (28)

Brook (29)
Romanov (28)
Juulsen (31)
Mete (30)
Fleury (30)
Harris (28)

Primeau (29)
Lindgren (35)

The idea is that we bring in two young LD as soon as we can, and the window opens at that time. Then the top-FOUR age one year at a time. While Weber and Petry are aging, and if one of them declines, Brook is maturing at the same time and hopefully turns into Petry v 2.0. Meanwhile the wild card Romanov could become a top-4 in 2-3 years. Even Juulsen or Fleury may be in the mix and maybe one of the two top LHD or Mete or Romanov could play the right side

I never said this year's Habs are a cup contender. Probably not next year either.

But depth DOES win cups. I was talking about forward lines specifically. In nearly all your examples those star forwards played on separate lines and the team rolled their lines. The Penguins being a prime example.

Two good LD would completely transform this team, raise puck possession ratios and therefore add more to the offensive production of all of our fairly skilled forwards. If we could have them by next year, let's say one by trade and one by UFA, we would be contenders, other things being equal. Even having three top D makes a big difference in the real world. Look at how Nashville continued to compete near the top with Subban out, and thus having just three guys to carry the big loads.

Nice projection, but you need to add a few players, meaning at least one or more of our draft picks, and the assets we got for Shaw and most importantly the player or players we pick up through UFA. For example, if we signed one or two of Gardiner, Stone, Skinner or Duchene. Plus there shouuld be a player or pick as well as Brodie for Petry.

Poulet, Suzie, Brooke, Flower and Romania have yet to play a single NHL game, they're not even guaranteed to all become NHLers, so yeah counting on them all to "contribute" ??

and then you count on Weber to play out every single years of his contract ? even the later years where he's not making much $ ? and not only that but to keep being our #1D - a good one at that - ?

and Price, who had a history of injuries, will keep performing till his late 30's ?

and there's this magical Petry for Brodie swap ?

and eventually Primeai, Ylonen and all the other prospects are not only making it, but they're solid contributors as well ?

and Habs are still contenders with Primeau and LIndgren in nets ? while Primea have yet to plai a single NHL game yet and Lingren is not even a NHL backup yet ?

that world where every single prospect pans out or even exceed expectations, where every good player we have now will keep being good till they're in their 40's, where no player leaves trough UFA, where the cap increases enough for the Habs to keep all their good players... where exactly is that world ??

calice...

true... projecting that ALL our prospects makes it and ALL our actual NHL players keep playing the way they are now (or even better) is not enough... should ADD to that, next 1st round pick is a 75 pts player, next LD Habs draft turns out to be a first pairing D at 18 years old.
