I think the last 10 trades are more reflective on how the market is valuing 1st round picks more than your trades that date as far back to 2014 IIRC.

Hanzal/Hartman (23 yo former 1st) are the two recent ones from 2017/18 and were brutal though
Hartman is nowhere near Byron, the guy sucks. Anyways, I just proved to you that they do bottom 6 players do get 1sts back.

If Byron can't get a 1st on the open market, then this might mean that he's not that a great a player. You can't have it both ways.

I remember that @Lafleurs Guy used to make the same argument with respect to Plekanec and Gionta back around 2013..

Why not trade him to a contender at the deadline instead? He could have been a hot commodity, what was the rush to sign him now? Why not keep the option to trade him open? The Old Bergy Special.
Bergevin made the same mistake with Price. Byron is coming back from a shoulder surgery and we dont know yet if he's fully recovered. Our GM never put himself in a position of strength when making trades.

This is an interesting question. The Habs are stacked in a lot of positions, most notably on the wing. Someone's got to go before the season starts.

Unless Byron had been traded next week, nothing changes, does it? The players that earn a spot will get it, and there are two forwards on IR to boot.

I would absolutely NOT sacrifice Byron to keep McCarron!

Bergevin sees the team fighting for a playoff spot, thinks we can pull a Vegas. Bergevin loves Byron (who doesn’t?) If we’re even remotely close to a wild card spot I bet he keeps Byron.. Wouldn’t be surprised if he signs a 4 year deal before the TDL honestly.

Posted this early early this morning in the Byron thread. Here we are with a 4 year deal. Good signing.

I think 1st's were easier traded in the past, sure. I think 1st are being valued more today when you're going for a player like: Karlsson, Duchene, ROR, McDonagh, Stastny, E. Kane, Tatar who were all traded from last deadline to today

The Rick Nash and Ryan Hartman's are just the anomalies you're hoping Paul Byron can be. We can all agree those guys weren't worth 1st round picks...2nd's at best.

He made the same mistake with Emelin as well, gave him 4 years X 4.1 million before he even came back from knee surgery. Bergevin loves giving out premature extentions.

At least Price was a star player so it kinda makes sense(still should have waited after a questionable year). But emelin?Plekanec? Byron just came back from injury, and he gives him a 4 year contract without letting him play a regular season game.

I think people need to come to grips that it's not a rebuild.

I think Bergevin need to come to grips that this will be a rebuild after looking at the end of this season. We should be tanking this season anyways
Poehling not here
Suzuki ?
Kotka ?????
Juulsen needs to go back AHL
Mete could start but needs to be 100% ready nhl
Weber out till like Feb and will need almost 2-3 weeks to catchup (lol)
Price looked meh since the preseason started
No centers still , Need someone to help Petry daily , Reilly played great but preseason is preseason.

This team wont make playoffs even if Price has a good season'' Might as well tank it hard for a year or 2

You know, it's funny. Lots of people, me included, were disappointed we did not re-sign Radulov. But had we done so and not finished final four last year, the pro-tankers would be calling for us to dump him to open a roster spot, and yet I see many of the pro-tank posters were part of the group that were not happy Radulov was not signed.

I think most of us will feel better when Marc Bergevin is fired and someone else takes over the rebuild.
Sigh, way to twist things around. There wouldn't be tank talk if we had signed Radulov. Those would have been mentionned when Price approached 34-35 years old, our team would be a hell different if we had kept him. This is apples and oranges.

I for sure thought he would be traded, but Paul is one of my favorites on this team so I don't mind him being resigned either.

Brings everything you need to the team. Speed, PK, scoring, can play on the 1st line or the 4th line and is a great pro. Also worked his butt off to get where he is and was never handed anything.

We still have Petry, Schlemko, Benn, and Pleks to move for 2nd/3rd/6th/7th round picks. If things play out well Petry could even get us a 1st.

But it all depends on how the team does. Clearly after our pre season the cup is coming back home /s :sarcasm::sarcasm:

I also dont get why this happened early. Could he not have waited a few months before extending him? Guess he didnt learn his lesson with Plekanec.

And Price as well. However when it comes to looking at extensions it is key to look at the individual situation.

-Plekanec was entering the final stretch of his career so giving him a 3rd year and not looking for a cap hot of under 6 million wasnt wise.
-For Price Bergevin should have waited considering he didnt get a discount on the deal at all
-Emelin resigning was risky considering Bergevin signed him before Emelin even played a game after his ACL injury. Although in the long run it didnt hurt the team too much.

Time will tell if we resigned him too early but I'm not overly concerned because Byron hasn't shown signs of regression yet and we are signing him for the prime years of his career.

I'm not disagreeing with you. I'm saying that at this moment, it's not a rebuild.
