How would you rank those Habs coaches?
From the most competant, to Mario Tremblay.

- St-Louis
- Ducharme
- Julien
- Therrien
- Cunneyworth
- Martin
- Carbonneau
- Gainey
- Vigneault
- Tremblay

Obviously, the worst is Mario Tremblay AINEC, but how do you order the rest?

Is that your ranking ? I hope not. MSL is at par with Mario Tremblay in the basement. At least, the rest are and were pro level coaches.

No, this is the order they were with us, from most recent to least recent

And no, St-Louis ain't close to the basement, Mario Tremblay is alone in the basement.

The only other coach that can hang with Tremblay is Perron

Mario won more games in 3 years than MSL has ever done.

Mario was given a former Stanley Cup champion, and made them trash
St-Louis was given the single worst team in the league, and try to do stuff with it

And even if St-Louis wasn't a good coach, at least he ain't a gigantic douche, like Therrien and Tremblay

Are you too young to remember this?

Almost all began their NHL coaching careers as rookies with the Habs, with little to no experience apart from Martin, but I couldn't stand his infamous "trap" system, highly popular at the time. Julien and Therrien were re-hired. Personally, they all were just as bad as the other, apart from Julien's second stint. They may have coached in the juniors, but I feel management left them hanging with little to no support. Some are former NHLers who gave coaching a try. Vigneault went on to become a very good coach elsewhere though. Either way, it's quite subjective. People are calling for MSL's head, but obviously he doesn't have the right ressources to bring them to glory.

You're talking about competence in your op. What is it, to you ? Cause winning games certainly should be part of being competent.

Since every coach has been crapped on relentlessly regardless of standings on this board, just going with other criteria, namely the kind of team and style of play being promoted. I think the top 4 coaches attempted a high-tempo, attractive style of play in line with Canadiens philosophy.

10/ Ducharme
9/ Tremblay
8/ Cunneyworth
7/ Therrien
6/ Vigneault
5/ Martin
4/ Gainey
3/ MSL
2/ Carbonneau
1/ Julien

I would say winning game is a huge part of it, but at the same time, perceived competence must count too.
Like, Perron was a legit Pejorative Slur but still has a Stanley Cup in '89, because the real coaches were Gainey and Robinson. The fact that he has a cup doesn't change the fact that he suck ass

No kidding. Did you get the memo that the team was in full rebuild/tank mode? Or have you seriously been watching the team in the hopes of competing for the cup? (in which case, I have to say, I feel bad for you, as I can't imagine that level of frustration).

Tremblay has been an assistant coach for 7-8 years after he left MTL. MSL would not be hired by a midget team.

I don't quite understand this post, as it is a non-sequitur. You're promoting the view that total number of wins is a means of ranking coaches. I responded to that position. I don't care how many years Mario was an assistant coach. I know he was a terrible coach because I watched every Habs game during the 90s and he ran out our HOF goalie who could occasionally win a cup. Believe me, with your recency bias, you would rank whatever coach happened to be active as the worst, no matter the wins or anything else.

Carbonneau is easily our best coach on that list. Gainey screwed him when he fired him, it wasn't merited.
Then why didn’t he get a job elsewhere ?

Claude Julien who

- Won a Cup
- Won a gold Olympic medal
- Jack Adams winner
- Most wins in Bruins history
- 667 wins in career (16th in NHL
history)

Does have a great CV

Some says is a sad list but 3 coachs on that list are in the top 20 in NHL history for coach in wins
- Vigneault (11th)
- Julien (16th)
- Martin (19th)

MSL shouldn’t be in any list that includes Martin, Julien, Vigneault, Therrien. Like or dislike these guy, they all real NHL coaches not a PR Stand In.

Gainey has coached 57 games, but you put it best one...Him and Cunneyworth shouldn't even be in the conversation or part of the list.

This kind of thread is a waste of cyber-spaces; the perfect place for those who will defend their own choice by saying "yeah, but X got Y and Z playing on his team when V inherited of A&W" :soap:
