I don't think I've ever seen a GM go "on second thought, go away" like Armstrong did to Bannister not even two full months into his first year as the full time head coach lmao.

I get why he did it though. Monty was very well liked as an assistant and I said it would either be there or Montreal.

Hope nothing but the best for him. It didn't work out here but I still truly believe he's a great coach

Milbury wasn't fired by the Bruins. He quit.

Montgomery CRASHED that team. I cannot remember a worse coaching job
than what he "did" in '23. Absolutely fire worthy IMO. It was outside of reason and logic. He was beyond lost, he seemed totally out of his element for the moment. Lost in his own head, in total confusion of what to do as he watched the team go from flying high, to pushing the stick down and crashing the plane. That crash in '23 will always be felt because of the dis-logic involved.
I've gone back and forth on Sweeney, but this was a kick in his ***** like none other. Almost felt like JM wasn't fully invested in winning the Cup.
I agree much of the time with other posters opinions regarding Sweeney but in reality, 2023 should have gotten had his name on the Cup as GM.

A good guy? Nope. Worse coaching job in my 55ish years of watching the team (okay Kasper is close) IMO he schemed his way out by crashing the team with his confusing "system" that wouldn't work with them. Then, he screams at players (especially in his Captains face) in public.
He told reporters that he didn't know what was wrong and that they should "figure it out."
f*** him and the horse he rode in on.
Sweeney gave him a chance and gave him a huge chance to rise up out of the gutter he was in.
The dis-logic of how he was coaching the Bruins was IMO treason.
Screwing the boss has been done before but I wish he would've been honest
and quit before training camp. That training camp where the players came back fat & happy and he ran a loose camp and bench.
All of those 2 many men penalty's and the rest of the job he did (this year) and he gets rewarded for being a ****. Naah, I'm glad he's gone and at least there's a guy behind the bench who is invested in the team.

I don't think you need to go full conspiracy theory to find the timing of it all at least, let's say, 'interesting'. I've said multiple times here that Monty looked completely checked out in his last couple of weeks behind the Bruins bench. Disinterested, no clear desire to fix the team's problems, fluffy, empty statements to the media. Whether he simply found it all too hard, didn't want to coach this kind of roster, or no longer got on well with management, that was a man who in the end simply wanted out.

Now did St Louis play into that mindset? We don't know. Given his past history there, and the fact that things with the Bruins had been on the rocks for a little while, I'd be shocked if he'd had no comms with Armstrong before he got fired by Sweeney, even if it was just some very early and small feelers regarding his future plans.

That's as far as I'll go though. There is no evidence of Jim deliberately tanking the Bs and I'll do him the courtesy of thinking he has too much integrity for that. He also couldn't have manipulated things in such a way that he'd be sure to just walk into the Blues job when it suited him. I do think he'd fallen out of love with coaching Boston and I do think St Louis was in some sense on his mind. The fact he had quite plausible options elsewhere probably made it less imperative for him to cling on at all costs to his position with the Bruins.

No hard feelings though. If it was no longer working out for Monty in Boston, then there was no point keeping him around any longer. Maybe he could have done more, but end of the day sometimes it's better just to cut your losses and it's better for both parties to move on. The Bruins have a chance to turn things around under Sacco. Monty can try the same in St Louis. Good luck to him.

Thanks to Nugs, we know that St Louis wanted him as their guy if the Bruins lost in the 1st round against Toronto. We know the Bruins tried to resign him after the 1st round win against Toronto but they couldn't come to an agreement. We also know that Monty's wife wanted to go back to St Louis.

All that doesn't add up to Monty trying to get fired but I think it was pretty clear he was without answers and his poor body language at the bench suggested he was pretty much done trying to find them.

Honestly, my first thought when I saw the news this morning was that Monty pulled a George Costanza and purposely tired to get himself fired for a better position with a rival organization. I'm just glad the Bruins fired him before he had to resort to streaking across the ice in a flesh-toned body suit lol.
