I'd put an asterisk on that. The Leafs seem to try the positionless hockey philosophy with Marner on the blueline on the PP, so it wouldn't be much of stretch if Rielly started playing a little out of position on the PP or they threw him out there in a pinch with the Tavares duo. But it would be unlikely since the status of a 1D going to forward would be tough "politically."
There is something so Maple Leafs about the fact that maybe the best defenceman the franchise ever had played centre for us.Especially after winning the Norris ... oh sorry, I was thinking Red Kelly!

I think there's a big difference though between doing something like that for a shift or two in desperate attempt to win a game vs having him be there long term.
Or Gary Leeman? Toronto has actually done this a fair bit.In those days you usually had four D playing most of each game, and we already had Horton, Stanley, Brewer, and Baun. That's a tough top four for anyone to crack.
Also, Red was brought in to be a shutdown player, which isn't Rielly's forte.
A better (not great) example would be Wendel Clark or even Ian White.
The real question is why you're trying so hard to force Rielly into being the exception, for no reason. Why cant Mo be the exception?
The real question is why are you answering a question with a question to avoid answering a question? The real question is why you're trying so hard to force Rielly into being the exception, for no reason.
The more things change, the more they stay the same. The old Jake Gardiner/Tomas Kaberle thread.
That would be what you're doing, not me.The real question is why are you answering a question with a question to avoid answering a question?
The Leafs also did it with Bob Neely in the 70's with different results than kelly obviously. One guy in 60+ years ago is the exception, not the rule.
Gary Leeman scored 50 goals after being converted to a winger. As far as I know there's only 2 Leafs that I can think of that started as a Defenceman and ended playing forward:
Red Kelly
Wendel Clark
When you think of all the thousands of players that have gone through TOR and the NHL, how many have made the switch to a different position?
The number (percentage) must be minuscule.
I suppose it's possible with Rielly, but doubtful.
We'd all love a legend moment like Red Kelly to happen, but that's so rare.
That would be what you're doing, not me.
Exceptions are exceptions for a reason, and shouldn't be the expectation just because you got bored and wanted to mess with the roster. Rielly is doing perfectly well in their current position, he has never played that other position before in his life, and his skillset matches his current position much better. We have no reason to start flip flopping him around.
So no, the real question is why you're trying so hard to force Rielly into being the exception, for no reason.
