The one potential saving grace is that I don't see the Yankees topping the current deal for a 34 year old version of Cole. I'd be more concerned if this was a contract they gave him a couple of years back, had they acquired him from Pittsburgh.

But let's assume he's at his current level for 5 years and the Yankees win a couple of championships. Could they stumble into that path? Perhaps. But I think that would also mean that both the team and Cole were incredibly successful. In which case, I think they'd (somewhat) accept the price for that level of success.

But we have half a decade to get to that point.

Yea, I’m not debating the merits of the deal at all. I’m just pointing out a potential pitfall. I’m certainly glad that they’re bringing in a guy who was arguably the best pitcher in the league last year. If he can stay healthy, then I see him having a career akin to Scherzer which would be terrific and very likely lead to a couple titles.

It's funny how we throw around a "couple of titles" like it's all but inevitable but in reality winning a World Series is still damn hard even if you're consistently the best team. Even Cole was touched up a few times and I still don't have a ton of faith in Severino or Paxton in big games. We shall see

Paxton threw well in the playoffs.

I agree with both of these statements.

I love assuming because it's never doing until it happens.

If it was inevitable they wouldn’t have given Cole that kind of money. Yankees should be among the favorites for at least a few years. Hopefully we’ll see one in the next couple years and go from there.

Rendon going to the Angels is interesting. Have to think they knew they were close when they dumped Cozart.

Their infield defense on the left side will be fantastic

They are going to need it with that pitching staff. I’d sign Ryu then look at the trade market for another SP or sign Porcello. They have holes in their lineup too that need to be addressed so doubt they get in on Madbum.

For me it’s probably more of a commentary on approach than a prediction.

When you look at how the Yankees are built, the ages of players, and some of their moves, this is a team that definitely expects to get more than a lone championship for its investment.

You are 100 percent right, absolutely nothing is guaranteed. But in Yankee land, I would suspect that the expectation is for this team is probably the highest it’s been in 10 years, and I’d argue they have more talent with prime years ahead of them than that 2009 club.

Easily.

This team has been thoughtfully built.

Cashman is underrated as an organization leader, IMO.

I think there was a time years ago where Cashman seemingly bought most of the team and really didn’t develop much young talent. It got tiresome watching the Brian Roberts and Stephen Drew’s of the world. Cashman has since completely rebuilt the developmental/scouting program into one of the best, and possibly THE best in baseball. They are able to go get a guy like Cole bc they found/developed guys like Sanchez, Judge, Torres (through trade), Severino who have been controllable cheap talent... and coupled that with wise signings and trades such as Voigt, Lemahieu, Didi (though gone now). Sure, there have been some misses, but also a ton of hits. Yankees and Dodgers have been two teams to master this without having to rip it down to the studs for multiple years like the Astros to become contenders. I think Cashman is widely considered one of the very best GM’s today. Money is certainly a factor - he’s not running the Royals - but there’s been some terrific asset management in recent years.

I think he was forced those years to compete from ownership on a tighter budget.

They were navigating through some huge underperforming contracts. They didn’t have a tight budget but they were tied to some massive deals. My point was more so that they didn’t seem to develop any young talent for years. It was Cano was great then years later Hughes and Joba (both who underperformed), and that was pretty much it for a decade or more. Now they are one of the strongest in the league in that regard. Now you use your money to find the missing piece, not use all your money cobbling together an entire roster. It was a huge organizational shift that changed everything.
