There is significantly more peace and goodwill in a baseball thread full of Yankees and Mets fans than any rangers thread on this board lmao
Well we're all Rangers fans, and we all root for either the Yankees or the Mets, so there's a major shared vibe of "I don't take this team seriously in the playoffs."

Well, with the season he's having the Mets will have to pay more to get him to sign a longer term deal. But to play devils advocate maybe hes trying extra hard because he knows a new contract is at stake. I've seen this so many times where a player has a great season right before they sign a new contract. Alexis LaFreniere, Igor and Juan Soto all come to mind. I think Juan Soto was still a good signing and has a GREAT future with the Mets and I'm glad to see him lately playing better but still .. if he had a season last year like he's having this year probably wouldn't have gotten such a juicy contract. Really Alonso's biggest weakness is his fielding which tbh is still a handicap so I don't blame the Mets for not being over eager to sign him, but the way they dragged him along and just dicked around forever in hindsight, he deserved better money and more love. Hopefully they sign him up for at least a few more years as he's proving to be a major asset and really such a likeable guy. Deserves to stay a Met until he retires.
Thing for me is no matter what he does this season, I'd still basically be willing to give him what was offered this past off-season--3-4 years max. Maybe with some sort of vesting option for another year. I love the guy to death but he's having a career year when guys don't generally have career years and with his body type, it's hard for me to believe he'll sustain his performance or anything close. Maybe you convince yourself he's good for 3 more good years before the real drop and that you can stomach 2 more bad years and offer him 5 total, but anything beyond that just scares me too much.

I don't know if you have a subscription to the Athletic but there's a very insightful article they have on Pete

How Pete Alonso took his game planning to a new level: ‘Knowledge is power’

basically, he's doing a lot of research on how to approach each pitcher, consulting outside sources. Really, I had noticed and also heard in news commentary about how he's become a much more disciplined hitter, drawing more walks and striking out less. No doubt, he's having a hell of a year but I'd say he's fundamentally a better batter than last year and earlier seasons too. Much more focused and disiplined, so that should be an improvement that carries forward. I think if the Mets dick him around at the end of the season, he'll have a lot more interest from other teams than he had last year. I'm hoping the Mets keep him, but like I said before at this point his main weakness is fielding and thats always going to be there. But as far as clutch hitting, he's a key guy, and seriously improved in the way he approaches each at bat. Much less striking out, a lot more big hits, thats worth something.

FWIW....I built my own ball diamond in our cow pasture as a 13 yr old with help from dad and 12 yr old brother . They said build it and they will come !!! Well the only thing that came was the milk cows who kind of pooped everywhere without regard . So...we always had to clean the field before we played....and usually it was a busy spot after supper....people would stop in and play in a pick up game . We had some great times . Surprising now many of those people have passed on . We even let the girls play.....and some of them were pretty good at it .

what else can you say about him at this point..he's doing stuff I've never seen in my life.He somehow is getting better every year

I wonder if being part of Boras' group had anything to do with that.

I mean I could have told him for free "Hey Pete, they're going to throw you breaking shit away to get you to chase then they'll bust you up and in with fastballs." Like isn't that the change in his approach? I know it's more nuanced than that but really I just see a guy who stopped chasing terrible shit and is now in better position to get balls he can drive.

It absolutely does. Boras certainly has an incentive too. But last season Alonso was also in a situation where he had a contract negotiation coming up and his regular season wasn't as good as this year and Boras was his agent last year as well. The resources he's using are both part of Boras' network and also part of Pete's workout group. I wonder why other players arent doing this as well, maybe they are and Pete is just clicking with it this year for some reason. Last night, in the 8th inning Pete drove in the Mets tying run before getting tagged out on a good throw from the outfield trying to make it to 2nd base. Soto had a pretty good night last night as well. It was a nice come from behind victory for them. I didnt get to watch the game though bc I went out with the wife and kid to a fancy Italian restaurant. The Mets have the best at home record in mlb this year, thay've been a fun team to watch.

We always had a low spot in the field beside our house/barn and we would play there but the best patch of ice was a quarter of a mile away in the woods and usually the whole gang would go there . It was great and never was it too cold as it never bothered us....but there were times when we came home with very cold toes LOL....but mom always took care of us . I think she appreciated an empty house on a Saturday afternoon . Life was simple 50 yrs ago .

The spot we played at was where a young man drowned years before in an old well . The family then had a hard spell and another son went to the logging camps in New Brunswick to make some money to save the family farm and then he got banged up and eventually died from a logging accident . A song was written and it was used by Bob Dylan as the idea for one of his songs so they claim. It was a very sad ballad . The family endured much hardship and eventually they packed up and moved on ...The ballad of Peter Emberley PETER EMBERLEY and the Dylan ballad was of Donald White . Population of the community was likely about 80 people ....10 families over a 2 mile stretch 150 + yrs ago .

Soto is here.

Get Gelbs out to talk to that mullet kid, that was a hell of a play. I've been near the railing and tried to catch a ball and got too scared, LOL. Kid did good.

Most people I know have a lot more today (financially and materialisticly) than they did back then but still feel like life was both simpler and better back then. ☺️
