OT: MLB Thread 2025

Diaz might genuinely be my least favorite Met ever.
The last closer they had that I liked was Franco. And that's probably mainly because I'm an Italian-American and I liked that he was, too, and that he was from Brooklyn which is where half of my family is from.

But then you had guys like Wagner, Looper, Familia and K-Rod, and now Diaz. With random guys like Frank Francisco and Bobby Parnell in between. They all had moments where they looked great, but they all sucked.

What is the matter with Vientos? Meanwhile Alonso is turning back the clock. Bat speed looks insane.
My guess is Vientos is feeling the pressure of what he did last season and what he was expected to do this season. They should give him a couple days off where he can just work on the cage. Tell him to come back and be Mark Vientos and don't worry about other expectations.

Exactly what I am thinking. Just do a soft reset or reboot, forget about these 13 games.

They showed Alonso's new bat during the game. It's not the same "torpedo" style, but the same concept. More wood in the barrel of the bat. Almost looks like they sawed off the very top. Clearly it is working

I really wonder under what circumstances does Alonso get resigned. Does him competing for an MVP make it more or less likely?

Alonso is an example of why I'm not so into these theories about the new bats making dramatic differences. I mean maybe hit bat is helping--his batter ball metrics are definitely better--but it's a change in approach that's really during it. His walk rate is several points higher than it's ever been, and his K rate is under 9 when for his career it's over 22. He's swinging at pitches outside the zone 11% less than his career average. He also has a .351 BABIP which indicates he's been lucky (that's 90 points above his career).

So again, the bat may help, but he has changed the way he's approaching ABs. You can definitely tell he's not chasing those breaking pitches outside which absolutely killed him the last couple of seasons. Now he's spitting at them. His performance is unsustainable but I do think if the change in approach holds you can see something closer to what he did a few years ago: .271 with 40 HR and a .141 wRC+ and maybe he's a 4+ WAR player.
