OT: MLB Thread 2024

Alonso is 16 HRs behind Wright and 26 behind Straw for the club's all time record

He has a career .339 OBP. It's a bad signing but better than reading this thread during the WS when all the NYY fans in here were whining.

His career OPS is 854 and his career OPS+ is 134. Soto by comparison has around the same number of ABs and his career OPS/OPS+ are 953/160. I don't think there's any problem with this deal all things considered. Pete has the opportunity to show he's not in decline and the Mets didn't risk a long term deal with an anchor.

You're correct about his stats. I meant to say he has a career .339 OBP. I think he's vastly over rated. Have a great day!

I don't disagree baseballwise but from the business aspect Pete resigning with the Mets probably impacts attendance more than if a different team signed him.

Pete puts a lot of pressure on himself. Now he just needs to do his part as an ensemble guy.

Glad he’s back.

It wouldn’t have felt right if this team started doing cool things and that big dumb goofball wasn’t part of it.
That's so weird because I felt the same way about Dave Magadan, then Rico Brogna, then Michael Conforto.

Exactly, he's at best the 3rd best position player on the roster, and that may even be questioned if Vientos continues to develop.

Soto and Lindor take a ton of the pressure off of Pete. I'm sure having 24M as a backup is also something that could help if he was feeling the pressure to perform for a big deal. That or he knows a 7-8 year deal is never going to happen so that'll take some of that off his plate.

Also, I can't remember when Alonso had someone hitting behind him who was a BIGGER threat. Let's see what he can do with some legit protection. I'm assuming Nimmo, Lindor, Alonso, Soto, Vientos, Alvarez. But Mendoza has pieces to play with.

Hopefully Pete can sit back and not feel like he has to be "the guy" in this lineup. I mean he'll still strike out too much even if he's in a good place mentally, but the reality is this lineup is a lot better with Pete hitting .240 with 40 homers than it is with guys like Winker, Baty, Mauricio, etc. platooning around the diamond.

It's also nice because those guys can now compete for spots. I didn't want to go into next year relying on Acuna or Mauricio or whoever to be productive when we don't really know if they can do that on a sustained level. Now everyone gets a shot and the best players get to play.

No downside for the Mets on a two year deal.

I like Nimmo down in the lineup. Ever since he started trying to hit for power he no longer profiles as leadoff IMO. I can't stand Nimmo lol

Lindor
Nimmo
Soto
Alonso
Vientos

Is probably how I'd start it. Lindor hit so well out of the leadoff spot. Nimmo, if he can't get back to the .360+ OBP, is a good option in the 2 hole and then you have plenty of guys on ahead of your best hitter, Soto. I always like the best hitters in the 3 hole. The Pete can do his thing with Vientos behind him.

imagine giving away Mookie Betts because you didn't want to pay him but signing Bregman for 40 mil lmfao

That's the same AAV as Aaron Judge
