MLB draft lottery way better than NHL’s

Should be based on principles like any other use of the word and in this case they should be expressed and agreed upon by the league. I’m sure you can intuitively gather those principles from a mission statement or similar that the NHL’s executives attempt to direct the leagues goals toward.

Just watched it this afternoon. A lot more interesting and compelling than the NHL. NHL made it even more boring a few years ago after Whinezerman complained. I would like to see all 16 non-playoff teams have a shot at the top 5 picks. Why should crappy teams load up for 4-5 years with top 5 picks??? Time to take power away from GMs. Imagine the hype and excitement if all 16 teams had a shot at the top 5 picks in a weighted format that still gives the odds to bottom teams but for first five, not first two.

I hate the teams that pay into revenue sharing getting punished aspect to it though, since the NHL hard cap doesn't allow those team to exert their financial mite in the same way you see teams like Dodgers, Mets and Yankees do it.

I like it , it makes ever winning anything even better , it let's you take pride in your organisations savviness and the players accomplishments knowing everybody is on an even playing field out there.

To make hockey grow , a sport that's virtually inaccessible for the average north american anymore I don't mind making the playing field even. Football seems to be thriving with this system. MLB needs a cap badly right now because the overall league is suffering.


Taxes aside , teams like Montreal and Toronto and the Rangers can afford plenty of "perks" for their players. Plus there's no cap on management and organisational employees

My point is, the lottery formula in the MLB actively punishes bigger markets teams which I think would be ridiculous in the NHL due to the hard cap. White Sox's weren't eligible to draft first because they are deemed big market and therefore couldn't pick in the lottery two years in a row.

No matter what format they decide on, I think they should make the proceeding rounds based on placement in the standings. Round 2 => the worst team standings wise gets the first pick. Take away the tank reward for the 1st round only.

The worst teams should not get the best picks in a cap league. Most of the time, the teams that finish last don't usually need the 1oa the most anyways.

The idea that bad teams need the 1oa or else they stay bad is a myth. It's been proven that bad teams more likely than not ruin 1oa more so than 1oa actually helps the bad team.

Draft order doesn't really matter in baseball all that much (relative to other leagues)

a lot of prospects won't sign, since there is like a 5-6 year age window to be picked and guys are like 5 years away from the pros anyway.

Edit to correct myself: The competitive balance picks are awarded to the 10 lowest revenue teams, and the 10 teams in the smallest markets. There is overlap in those groups, so the total bonus picks is less than 20.

The teams that have one can trade it to anyone.

Las year there were 3 traded in 3 separate deals.

I hadn't stated it, but those picks are split between rounds 1 and 2, and rounds 2 and 3. So they're fairly high level picks, mostly within the top 100 overall, given a 20 round draft. The one the Orioles traded to get Corbin Burnes was #34 overall.

For what it's worth, most people I know that follow the MLB draft would like all of the picks to be tradable. And most of the media takes I remember reading feel the same way.
