The only thing I'd change is that everyone has an equal chance of getting 1-2-3-4...etc. So if you almost make the playoffs (Penguins) vs tank the entire season (*cough Blackhawks cough*) you have equal chance at the 1st overall instead of moving up like 10 spots. But then the next season, you can't move up.

Alright. Scrolled through most of this thread without reading everything. Hell, it's a repeat topic so I already know what I'm going to say, lol.

The problem isn't that the worst team has the best chance of drafting #1OA. The problem is that the same team can draft #1OA in a short span of time.

The Oilers never should have been allowed to draft #1OA four times in six years.

If you want to fix the problem, then fix the actual problem. Don't allow a team to get the #1OA more than once in a 5 year span.

They did change it, you can get a lottery pick twice now in 5 years.

Okay, I think I found it. It still says "more than 2 times in a 5 year span." Doesn't seem stringent enough. Oilers should still never should have been allowed to draft McDavid.

It happed years ago when they changed from the top 3 getting lotto chances to 2.
This doesn't prevent a team from getting the #1OA more than once in a 5 year span, as I read it.

Like I said originally , it’s limited to 2 in 5 years.

draft lottery isnt suppose to be fun, its stupid to reward good teams that missed the playoffs even if they win a lottery. if you want to get top picks then f***ing be the worst in the league.
I;m fine with a smaller lottery happening but imo teams shouldnt be able to drop back more than 4 spots max. never want to see another team expected to pick 12th win 1st overall again

Did edmonton not move up to first in any of them?
Edmonton drafted #1OA more than once in 5 year span. The new rules don't prevent that per se. They only prevent a team moving up in the lottery more than two times in a 5 year span. The Oilers moved up twice because the league tweaked the odds rather than outright prohibiting multiple #1OAs in a short span.

Still a failure on the part of the NHL, but it's not as bad as it once was.

If you’re the worst team, worst can pick is third now, as of 2022 draft.

Deserve is a funny word.

Who is the arbiter of determining who is deserving?
Should be based on principles like any other use of the word and in this case they should be expressed and agreed upon by the league. I’m sure you can intuitively gather those principles from a mission statement or similar that the NHL’s executives attempt to direct the leagues goals toward.
