He was never cleared to play. He was cleared to practice and had inflammation and swelling once he practiced

Seriously.. I understand the guy is a warrior and blah blah.

But come on.. What's going on here? The most annoying part is there is so much tight lip and nothing being said about the situation.

It is probably for a reason. I doubt the guy is milking it or just doesn't want to play. From what it sounds like, he has been medically cleared but he isn't physically up to it yet. He hasn't been playing for 8 or 9 months and then had a knee surgery. He is probably going to need some additional time to get his conditioning up to snuff.

A veteran player like Mitchell understands the limitations of his body enough to know when he's truly ready or not. If he goes in early and performs below expectations or is made a liability on the ice by the opposition then I'm pretty sure he'd be getting grief for that too.

This creeps into that fuzzy grey area where some athletes are expected to suit up and perform despite not being at 100% -- fight through injuries, gut it out like a warrior, and stuff like that.

I guess the part that doesn't make sense to me is that when a player is "medically cleared to play" I assume (perhaps incorrectly) that there is no chance of re-injury in the course of normal use. Meaning he couldn't re-injure the knee just by going out and skating on it, it would have to be something like someone falling on him or catching a rut or any of the other million things you could do to hurt yourself when you don't have a previous injury.

So if that's the case, get your butt on the ice. Also, f he's worried about under-performing, get your butt on the ice. Hes not going to be worse than Drewiske/Muzzin... I just worry that something else is at play here.

I heard somewhere (forgot where) that his knee swelled up after his last skate and wasn't on the trip.

He indicated in an interview that the surgery was to clean out cartilage. The knee is structurally sound (which is why he was probably cleared to practice), but the inflammation is inhibiting him.

Perhaps then it has more to do with conditioning. I doubt he's been able to skate much or do some activities he'd normally do to work on cardio, etc. until he was medically cleared to do so, so while he may be medically able to play, he's not up to 'game shape' so to speak.

But you can't get into game shape when you're not even skating. The game shape issue is usually that 5-10 games or so after coming back from an injury where they get back up to speed and such.

Then maybe it's more a case of what Driller was saying, that he got cleared but then it flared back up.

Not sure, just spitballin' here. :dunno:

The bottom line is there is obviously a reason why. I doubt the guy just doesn't feel like playing. He doesn't strike me as that sort. I meant the guy came to our team after a major concussion so I don't think anyone should question his toughness or his willingness to play after a tough injury. I'd venture to guess there is a set back but they are speaking about it for whatever reason.

They haven't exactly been very forthcoming regarding his condition, that's for sure. That bothers me especially since he's not even skating which makes me wonder if it's not just an issue with swelling.

Right... and it's not hard at all, for a player or member of the org to explain why. "Still experiencing pain/inflammation." "Needs time for conditioning", etc. Obviously you can be medically cleared to play and still be in a great deal of discomfort (Scuderi's eye last game or Doughty's foot), there's no reason I can ascertain why Mitchell wouldn't simply state what the issue is.

Mitchell is not doing himself any favors by keeping whatever the reason is a secret. Obviously Sutter doesn't know the answer or we would have heard it by now (and Sutter has expressed his own frustration about this as well). If the Kings are withholding that information, then shame on them, but I have no idea why they would do that.

If someone would just explain why, all this hand-wringing would disappear.

When I played football I blew out my ankle and sprained my knee at the same time. I was medically cleared a year later but didn't feel "normal" until 2 years later.

He'll come back when he's ready. No point in coming back early and getting injured again.

Just because DS knows the reason doesn't mean we will know it. DS is honest, but he's not going to say something if the organization would rather he didn't. He's a King first, media/fan friend second. I'm sure Mitchell isn't keeping anything secret. I doubt that DL/DS are asking him "what's wrong" and he's saying "I don't feel like telling you." Maybe no one can figure it out and theya re just letting him rest it for a few weeks before looking into it again.

i started a thread a few days ago that i hoped would be stickied so people could add to it as work got out on his condition. it never was stickied and fell down the threads.

anyways being medically cleared, doesn't mean - suit up your good to go. it means he could begin to return to his regular schedule of activity. prior to that he wasn't cleared and under no circumstance should he do anything that would be considered anything beyond probably normal walking.

i had arthro on one knee years ago. i blew it up skiing and had partial tears of two ligaments and a loss of ~60% of the cartilage in the knee. the ligaments over time and rehab i was told would heal, as long as i didn't go out and exert heavy on the joint. the loss of cartilage there is nothing to do, except to have it cleaned out.

i was on crutches for a week with a soft cast. the next week no crutches, but the soft cast. the third week i was out of the cast. during this time i wasn't to do anything but slowly begin to put normal weight and walking on it. to slowly work back up to walking only on the joint.

once i cleared that period, i started with light rehab to build strength back up in the joint. by working all the muscles around the joint it reduces the chance of re-injuring it.

this is the part where i began having swelling problems. my guess is Mitchell experienced something similar here. after a week the joint and tissue got used to the activity and the swelling subsided.

the light rehab went on for 2-3 weeks after the swelling stopped and then was given clearance to go full bore on weights and activity. i then experienced more swelling as i began to work it up in weight and stress levels.

it wouldn't surprise me that he has had the same type of setbacks.

just because a cast comes off and the doctor says go for it, means you are 100%. far from it. at the level of compete these guys are at, it is even harder i am certain to get back.

He can't get his conditioning if he takes himself or refuses to step on a sheet of ice 2.5 weeks after he was cleared to not only skate, but play. Whatsmore, Hellene Elliot said on XM radio that he looked remarkably out of shape. All of that coupled with him injuring himself in a non training, recreation injury that in most professional conracts is prohibited (per Elliot) makes me a little uneasy about all of this. In this case, he is not subject to his contract and is allowed to do whatever he wanted since the owners locked the players out.

Terry Murray is obviously upset about the situation since he refuses to even say Mitchell's name to reporters and instead says "I don't know this player. I only comment on people on the roster" (again per Elliot). Needless to say, it's perfectly ok to be dissapointed in the player in this case, even if we don't know all of the facts.
