Mitch Marner, Yet Again

I've never thought of it like this but yes, so true. Gilmour and Marner are like polar opposites but Keon is another story, lots of similarities there for sure.
Keon was great because he didn’t need to a tough guy because they had that in spades.
If Marner is the best situation he’s ever been in, but if Matthews and Knies are checked and he’s one dimensional again then it’ll be a difficult situation.

People shouldn't be fooled by the fact that Keon didn't take penalties, he was as tough as they come and a monster on the forecheck, in that regard he was actually a lot like Gilmour. Having thought about it a bit more, Keon and Marner aren't really that similar after all.

In the words of no less a complete player than Gordie Howe, Keon "could do it all."
...
"He never missed a single shift, never stopped trying no matter how long he played. He was always out against the other team's roughest guys, too, getting hacked by guys like Bobby Clarke and Billy Barber. But the tougher it got, the tougher he got. The more intense the game, the more intense he was. You just couldn't keep him down because, no matter what, he was going to keep coming at you."

When I met Paul Henderson years ago, he raved about Keon's work ethic and skating. Keon was an above average skater for his time. Mitch's skating is OK but he is no speed demon.

I was just a little kid at the time but from what I remember, Keon was a way above average skater. Marner's a great skater I think in every way except for speed which is obviously very important. Keon was super fast so overall, I would say Keon is a better skater than Marner.

The more I think about it, it's Gilmour and Keon that are quite similar in many ways.

Hope he is preparing himself for one of the Tkachuk brothers in round #1. The Leafs have not beaten the Panthers or Senators this year. His season's stats against the Sens and Panthers look like his playoff stats against the Bruins. 1 goal, 1 assist, -4, 7 SOG playing 20+ minutes and #1 PP time.

I hope we don't face Florida.

When Florida tosses out Matt Tkachuk or Sam Bennett or Brad Marchand as wingers Leafs toss out Marner as the offset to the physical play.

Good Luck expecting any push-back ability.

Last year against Boston with Marchand ................................. Marner 7 games 1 goals 2 assists 3 points
Previous year against Florida with Tkackuk/Bennett .......... Marner 5 games 1 goals 2 assists 3 points

This is going to be a big test for Marner to show up and produce this year because he will be facing tight checking, hard hitting to try and convince MLSE that he needs to be paid top dollar.

This is a make or break year for Mitch and the Leafs.

without telling anyone my age lol ... in 1972 i went to the Harris/Keon hockey school.
we were of course young hotshots that thought we were pretty good ... we were in the dressing room and Keon walked in, the room went dead silent ... he said "I may not skate very well today, new skates that I haven't worn yet" ... a few guys chuckled
we went on the ice and lined up on the goal line .. he said when I blow the whistle race to the other goal line
he blew it and I swear to god he was done when almost everyone else was still between the 1st blue line and centre
he was so fast, the speed seems so much faster when you are on the ice with them, it was like "wow"
pretty neat for a 14 year old kid though

Again, you’re ready way too much into it. They drew parallels more so about the number and size. Keon didn’t wear 93, so that wouldn’t have made sense from a marketing standpoint. The only people who care about the comparison are people who maybe can’t decipher between marketing ploys from a team/player and an actual player comp. anyone who watched Marner in London knew what that was the minute he was drafted.

He has never played like Gilmour ever. It was simply a way for a young player to connect to a fanbase that was dying for fresh blood after a long drought. It’s not that deep. Many organizations and players do this. It’s not new, Marner won’t be the first or last.
Marner wore 93? I when was that? I seem to remember him having that number in his AAV and making reference to Gilmour, I don’t remember him wearing that number.

He like tugging on the heart strings. I think that was his Jr number. If only he could play like 93.

He averaged 6.5 penalties in minutes a season. I'm not questioning his intensity or his toughness, you can be both of those things without taking a lot of penalties, but it's not fooling anyone to say he didn't take many penalties. He didn't.

Why do you even bother lol? It’s all dishonesty with these guys. No one wants to have a real discussion anymore.

They’ll criticize people who don’t watch Marner for every second of the game, yet somehow dismiss professional analysts when they give a negative opinion on Marner. Then when you do find someone on here who watches all the games, they’ll say that you have to watch him in person to see all the little things he does and really appreciate him. It’s all ridiculous, really.
The people who watch him live for 82 games a year give him the most TOI of any forward on our team, play him against the best opposing players every single night and play him in literally every single most important minute possible (PP, PK, last minute leading by a goal, last minute losing by a goal). Why is that, cause he sucks, cause they want to lose?

Matthews and Marner will most likely get the Barkov matchup which has been with butter soft Verhaeghe and Reinhart if I'm not mistaken. Every team has a few softer players. With that said I'd probably match McCabe & Tanev against Bennett, Tkachuk & Marchand which should result in quite an enjoyable series imo.

Yeah our blueline can punish those guys and I think forwards like Knies, Mcmann and Laughton will be able to handle themselves well in the physicality against them.

I though my meaning was clear - the fact that he never took penalties does NOT mean that he wasn't tough as nails.

Who said he sucks? This is another thing that people make up in their heads so they can come in and be his knight in shining armour. It’s just more dishonest arguing which make Marner homers very difficult to talk to.

He’s an elite player who is overpaid and underperforms in the playoffs. It’s pretty obvious to most people, but some still disagree with that which causes the debates.

I can ask silly questions too. Who's only missing the occasional game? How do we know it's only the occasional game? We appear to have people missing months or more at a time. How do we know it's only months? That's who we're talking about so stay on topic.
Exactly.. you don't know but you keep repeating on the daily that it matters significantly. So you've now contradicted yourself and lost whatever is left of any credibility you once had.

I'd say it's because he's one of our best forwards, especially during the regular season.

Here's one for you:
Marner's production over the course of his career drops bigtime in the playoffs. He also seems to be trending downward in this regard considering in the last two playoff series he played, Marner suffered a PPG drop of more than 50% from the regular season with only 6 points in 12 games. In your considered opinion, is this cause for concern, yes or no?
