Mitch Marner, Yet Again

No one can be this stupid.
Trust me they can...
Maybe, they're not that stupid.
Not a conscious decision on my part, but for quite some time now I have the game on but am doing other things, I take a look when a goal is scored and maybe watch the last few minutes if that game is close.
@Gary Nylund acknowledges that he doesn't watch the games and only looks up from doing other things when a goal is scored. That would actually explain why the haters don't understand. I thought that they were watching the puck and were missing the Marner Magic® that happens away from the puck but if they are only watching highlights / boxscores then that explains it.

I haven't paid close attention lately, but by now the pattern's firmly established - Marner's a great regular season player who's effectiveness drops after 86 games to the point where he goes from being a ~100 point player to a ~40 point player. He has yet another chance to change the narrative in April, then I'll be watching very closely as I always do in the playoffs.

Who are these haters you speak of? Who/what do they hate?

@ACC1224 what do you think I see you liking things I’m curious about your opinion on marners play of late and do you think it’s just a brief slide that he’ll get bacc on tracc?

Been thinking about this Mitchy situation:
  1. His refusal to negotiate during the season doesn't mean he's made his mind up on leaving, it just means we wants to leverage the entire league to get as much as possible. Ferris is no dummy.
  2. It's been nearly a decade of playoff failures and he gets carved year after year for his disappearing act. This year will be no different and the pressure will be even higher as he's walking to UFA.
  3. It may simply be a matter of the team and player needing a change. Mutually beneficial breakup where Mitch goes somewhere to become 'the guy', and the Leafs gain $13-14M in cap space to essentially re-tool the roster.
Nobody can say he didn't have ample chances, it just simply has not worked.

They don't. Marner, for example, took a game off to rest for the playoffs while sitting at 99 points. Also, just because it's meaningless in the sense of representing relative player quality, that doesn't mean players don't enjoy chasing benchmarks.
He played the last game of the season, but he took the previous game off.

Missed game on April 11th., played April 13th.

He had no points in his last game, played 23 minutes with 1 shot.

Matthews took that same game off.

It looks like some of his teammates are getting of tired of his act.

Both parties will be better without each other in the long run

Were talking about Matthews shooting percentage and when it drops it's going to impact his primary superstar winger.
There's obviously something wrong with Matthews shooting this season as he has his worst regular season shooting percentage EVER.
Last season when Matthews had his highest ever sh% Marner primary assisted on 24 goals and was injured for a month while Matthews had 2 primary assists on Knies goals.

In the last three full season Marner is 5th in 5v5 primary assists.

Connor McDavid 76
Nathan MacKinnon74
Johnny Gaudreau 74
Leon Draisaitl 70
Mitchell Marner 69

To suggest that Marner isn't a superstar playmaker is absurd and you should be embarrassed. Do you even watch the games.

Matthews regular season (605 games) sh% 15.9%
Matthews playoffs (55 games) sh% : 9.8%
Matthews last 3 games of playoffs in last 4 seasons (12 games) sh% 4.25%
Is Matthews' drop in the playoffs (and particularly in the later games) because he suddenly forgot how to shoot, or because Marner disappears?

I like Mitch, and he'll succeed elsewhere, but he isn't what we need. Let him walk and target Bennett and Ehlers in FA. We may need to overpay for them, but we should have wiggle room with no Marner/cheap Tavares and the cap going up. Knies contract is the tricky one here.

Knies/Matthews/Nylander
Cowan/Bennett/Ehlers
Domi/Tavares/Loughton
McMann/Holmberg/Lorentz

I can't imagine a better mentor for Cowan than Bennett, and Ehlers is a little shit too. That line could be hell to play against.

More grit and speed through the lineup.

Drai is on another level. He is a game breaker. To say that they are same or Marner better is disingenuous
Its laughable to put Draisaitl and Marner on the same level as Mitch isn't even in the same ballpark.

Drai is on the verge of his 4th 50+ goal season and has top 100 points 6 times already including this year. His worst statistical season is 84 points in 56 games in 2020-21

How many 50 goal or 100 point season does Marner have?

Not to mention Draisitl scored more playoff goals in 12 games in 22-23 than Marner has his entire career. And his career playoff points are more than double Marner's. Whoever said these two players are comparable is out to lunch.
