Player Discussion Mitch Marner, Yet Again

  • Xenforo Cloud is doing server maintenance Thurdsay 13th at 9 AM GMT. Downtime is to be expected during the process. Server changes were implemented recently to cope with the traffic surge last week. This seems to be affecting the user login, so please anyone experiencing this, log out and clear the browser cache. We expect to have this issue solved once the maintenance is complete.

4 Possible Outcomes for Marner according to Bryan Hayes:

His camp immediately and openly in the media blasted the Matthews contract.

His father went on leafs lunch and complained that Mitch should be captain.

The family started selling Marner/leafs merch privately

His camp openly and repeatedly threatened to sign offer sheets and go to the NLA.

Since that time he has had a section of the fan base against him.

This sounds like rumors started by "insiders", did he actually do anything you listed? Fathers can be idiots and act independently of the player right?

Or 13.25 and he does not get a NMC. The number doesn't even matter to me. nMC does.

I despise NTC/NMC, that should be worth a 25% AAV reduction alone.

Glad to hear it I hope the CBA fixes it. I think when most think about it, normal Joe's get that's a level of protection you should be paying for not offered as a bonus.

Actually. That's exactly how it should work. No NMC can be issued. A price may be agreed up based on market value and the player can purchase an NMC from the team if they make over 5m at say 20% of contract value. It can be bought at discount or for limited years as well.

Example.

Teams look at comparable. Market 10M.

Contract agreed and awarded 10m x8

Player buys NMC years 1 - 4.

Cap hit and pay 1 - 4 $8M
Cap hit and pay 5 - 8 $10M

Sundin got hate because he refused to waive saying he didn’t believe in joining a team halfway through the year.

Then joined Vancouver. Halfway through the year
I remembered, just asking the poster who were Sundin’s core bc they were mostly players that came in and played. Instead of the AM, Reilly, MM, Willie and JT, where they started playing together in their prime.

Just heard on Bourne show, Marner has more hits per 60 than Matthews this year.

Warning: See the Boston series fly by with circle back and softest hit of all times to get the idea.

What is Paul now paying the hit counter guy? Marner hits are not hits. He touches people with his shoulder. Any softer and the police would be called because player mistaken it for SA.

Yeah and they're real bonecrushers too. That's why players run for the hills when they see Marner coming.

This is entertaining, do tell us what else have you heard?

What number can we classify winning the negotiation at? 12Mx8?
I believe it's the orange man who gets to make that call, everything anyone else says is fake news.

Seriously?
I doubt it. It may have been embellished like threatening to go to Switzerland might be mentioning that going to Switzerland is a possibility or just going to skate there (Nylander actually went to Switzerland during his actual hold out). Same with offersheets - they may have been there. A player can't really threaten I sign one and a team can match or get compensation.

Mostly hyperbole.

Not buying the theory that Rantanen's deal sets a cap on what Marner can expect to get as a free agent. Marner will get a bump--likely a sizeable one--by being available to the highest bidder, especially with the rising cap. There will be teams bending over backwards to write him the biggest cheque if given the opportunity.

It is obviously what Marner is counting on by not negotiating now. My guess is $14 million per at least.

You're right,.it's not necessarily a full view of what the wide open market will offer him, BUT Its a pretty clear signal what playoff teams/contending teams value a star winger at though.

Now, teams looking from the outside in, like Anaheim or Columbus may up the amount a bit, though how willing would the player be willing to accept a deal to spend the next few seasons potentially missing the post season?

I can’t really see him leaving. He’s from here, there is a lot of talent on the team, and the team has been good to him. Tough market, but he knows this.

The grass isn’t necessarily greener, but the money could be. Being the only team that can offer the 8th year should make a difference. But maybe there are other motivations.

That would presume he wants 8 years.
Who knows honestly there

Playmakers need finishers to be effective. Just because Rantanen scores a lot of goals does not mean he isn’t a good setup man.
Also, he can be defensively responsible. Just because a player doesn’t sit high in the offensive zone and is the first guy back, doesn’t mean he isn’t good defensively.
Give me the big, fast, goal scoring winger any day of the week over the slower, smaller, perimeter winger. You can supplement any perceived defensive difference by acquiring those types of wingers, for much less of a premium.
Often underappreciated,

Matty is a good playmaker but when you're goal scoring prowess is Hull/Ovi territory than player and team will prioritize goal scoring.

Willy used to be considered more playmaker, with a 1:2 ratio in his early years, but once he hit 40 goals, it's now closer to 1:1.

I used to watch a ton of live Caps games during Ovi's early years and he was a great passer, but they essentially built an entire system around brute forcing goals through him.

Scoring goals takes precedence, so if you can do it, usage will shift from one to the other.

Where's the meme, that talks about fans who believe every pile of Bullshit that comes out of gossip mongers mouths. Did we really raise that dumb and gullible of a generation?

1) Consider the source
2) Consider the motivation of that source.
3) Use your brain to do some deductive reasoning.
4) Ask Alexia what deductive reasoning is
5) Go to Instagram to find out what your opinion is, realize it's just a forum for vapid brain dead people.
6) Ask a Boomer or a Gen Xer what the correct opinion is.
7) Rinse, wash, repeat
It just amazes me how obvious who your paymaster is and what you are able to get away with here. You are a sad man.

Who's playing him 14 plus when Rantanen just signed for 12? He is not somebody you hitch your cart to. He got the Leafs out of round #1 and disappeared after game 86. He is a more expensive Johnny Hockey (RIP) and JH got 9.75 after putting up a numbers Mitch can only dream about.
I think Marner and his paid entourage in here are in for a big wake up call.... unless weak Leaf Management signs him, of course. They will overpay because they are not serious about winning.
