Marner's agent is the most tone deaf person in the NHL. Whatever happens, he's handled it poorly for his client, damaged his legacy and perception amongst fans as he plays his narrow focused games. There was a way to deal with this contract, if Marner did want out, to leave and both sides benefit. Now we're left with this dark cloud hanging over this team and Mitch until July 1st, this contract has morphed into a net negative for all involved. Players listen to their agents, Ferris likes to take it to the line, but he's a fool here and he's utterly failed his client.

This team continues to cater to Marner's feelings. They did it again by Brad speaking.

It’s not about Marner’s feelings, it’s about the team. It was stupid for the team to leak it. Now you’ve made this a bigger deal than it needs to be and you think the guys in that locker room are happy about it? Think what you will of Mitch but he’s still one of the 23 men in that locker room. So yeah I’m sure those reports didn’t sit well with everyone. Everyone on that roster was probably thinking management is looking to add to the club not trade the leading scorer.

I understand from a business perspective why it had to be done, but the timing of letting it be leaked to the media was stupid. That would not inspire confidence in the locker room, all it would do is just piss everyone off. Add it to a long list of things this management group continually messes up.

I wish Marner fired the guy after the last negotiation. Don’t know why he feels so indebted to Ferris.

How has management screwed this up, and would you have have handled it differently?
They should have made re-signing him last offseason a priority. If they're not offering above Nylander's cap hit percentage, they're insulting him. We've played stupid games because of this fanbase's obsession with change for change's sake, and we're finding out what the stupid prizes are.

This whole trade fiasco was also so pointless. They knew that he was going to refuse, and they didn't even really want to do it anyway, but now instead of making him feel valued, we've put this distraction in his head as we get ready for the playoffs, and fed the toxic media machine. It's the last thing Marner, this team, or re-signing efforts needed.

Letting a Marner calibre player walk is a fireable offense on its own.
Secondly, how is criticism of Marner been colossally unfair? Has it been over the top at times? Sure. In large part that is due to the way that his camp has positioned themselves in the media, and the lack of playoff success.
The criticism has been misguided, massively exaggerated, and at many times, personal. It's sickening what people have said in here and out in the world about and to another human being. It's even more sickening when these are supposed to be fans, and they berate one of the best players that has ever worn the Leaf jersey, and direct 60 years of frustration towards him. The only position his camp has taken is wanting to be paid his proper value like everybody else. He has not been even close to the reason for the lack of playoff success.
Tieing the teams whole future to one player is an over reaction.
Losing a prime aged franchise player for nothing is a massive hit to a team, especially when they don't have the pieces or management to help mitigate the impact.
Pretty much a moot point for the Marner contract since Sportsnet reported that Ferris only used the Matthews and Tavares deals as comparables rather than non-Leafs.
Not sure what your misunderstanding of what happened in the previous negotiation has to do with anything.

I work in management and I have to deal with the public and its freaking brutal. I feel for Marner on the emotional level I.e. fans.

However, the whole "I wanna stay" thing I have zero sympathy towards. Brother, sign a contract then. Must it be to your exact liking if you want it so badly? I'm fed up and I'd rather just part ways when we're done in a round or two. This saga is exhausting for me, can't imagine how he feels. Oh no the multi-millionaire wants an extra 250K per year or else he'll leave his townhouse. Give me a break. Just sign a reasonable rate or accept the terms that you'll need to go elsewhere if money is the be all end all

Can competitive include the last 4 years being Limited instead

He could have fired him. This whole thing and all the distraction, the lack of success is on Marner. If they go out in the POs quick obviously its on Marner.

If this era ends in failure. Shanahan Dubas and Marner will be forever know as the culprits. Culprits equal to none other than Ballard himself.

He will always be one of the POS that ruined the Leafs best hope in a half century for a cup

I don’t think he wants to be a Leaf so unlikely. Even he knows he’s not a winning a cup here.

And we know what’s going to happen. He’s gonna go to another market and win immediately lol. It’s happened with every other good player we’ve had.

Matthews and Nylander blameless? Psychotic answer honestly.

Did that just happen?

Leafs management couldn’t be more stupid honestly. If you want him, why the f*** would you ask him to waive? Then allow that to get out. Just clown behaviour from this management team. Reading that article it’s clear that decision has disrupted the locker room.

Though it does sound like Marner needs to cut out the middle man. Ferris seems to be the issue.

The only team that benefits from this is Carolina, creating discord against an Eastern conference rival & ensuring the hockey news cycle moves away from them trading Rantanen within weeks of acquiring him. Carolina leaked it.

Bro, are you on his f***ing PR team?

It’s been reported we’ve offered him plenty of fine contracts and he’s said no. They had an elite player that was willing to sign here. So they did what was smart and went and asked.

Everyone complains about how we aren’t as ruthless as other teams and we create a country club. We try changing it, people complain. Good f***ing lord.

How do we know it was management that leaked this? At 301pm it was everywhere Marner was willing to test FA. That doesn’t impact the locker room?

Nah, just the leafs trying to be good now and long term impacts it.

Give me a break

Yes I’m on his PR team.

@ToneDog mentioned we are set to get payment from Marner with this new contract. So excited.

And the reason why I’m pissed off about it is because they knew he was not waiving. There’s a difference between being ruthless and being stupid. And the leafs have and always will be stupid.

Ruthless is saying, that our offer expires at the deadline. You take it or any dreams you have of staying here is gone after that. You can stay but we aren’t extending an offer after the trade deadline.

Stupid is asking him to waive knowing that he wasn’t going to agree to it, then saying you want to keep him, disrupting the locker room, then allowing this to come out.

Marner himself has never said he doesn’t want to be here.

he has a funny way of showing he wants to be here, considering he's willing to test FA!

It's likely because they've grown frustrated with the lack of progress in the extension negotiations. Sometimes a show of strength Is needed, especially when the friendly approach (how the core has been treated to date) clearly hasn't led to any progress.

And/or they felt the Rantanen option gave them a better chance to win and they figured it was worth a shot

The only way he is winning a cup if he goes to a team that has 2 or 3 players that are better than him. You're not winning if he is one of the 2 top players on your team.
if that is the case, then he might not be making more than he does right now

that would make him another teams kessel, and he was paid around 11.5% of the cap which is around 11 million next season on a 95.5 million dollar cap

he will probably get paid as there are a handful amount of teams that can give him 13-14 outright. Around half the league will probably have the money to try and get him and they don't have to give up assets, especially teams like Chicago or Anaheim

Completely understand the business point of it, but it just feels like this has been turned into a huge media shit storm at the worst possible time. It’s on our management to be a bit more responsible, make those moves behind the scenes but allowing it to come out and become a distraction is unacceptable to me.

What did Nylander do? His numbers went up as the series went deep. He took 6.9m contract to start, and underpay in the end. Matthews playoff number went down a little as series went deep. He won multiple awards and was compensated for his Rockets.

Marner whined about Babcock, he is the face of Nu Hockey that Dubas and Shanahan championed. The 3 amigos killed our shot.

Nothing but facts there

You sure Marner was the only one to complain about Babcock? You’ve been pretty wrong a lot…

I want to give you the chance to save yourself. But I do remember Babcock having to get on a plane, flying to Arizona and go smooth shit over with Auston right before he got fired.

It's true and you know it Francis. Marner and Dubas were chums. He paid them like gods and based NuHockey off of Marners non contact play style.
