My only hope is if Marner goes somewhere he doesn't decide to take a discount there. I can handle him demanding 14-15M and getting it somewhere because I can say we couldn't do it and he wanted the money.

If he goes and signs for 12M with the Panthers for example... He will be the most hated Leaf ever. Our own Messier.

That's true, but you left out the Leafs being frustrated with negotiations. Whether that means the Marner camp won't negotiate until after the season or is asking for the moon is open to speculation.

Agents/GMs historically value primary assists the same as goals.

Pretty much a moot point for the Marner contract since Sportsnet reported that Ferris only used the Matthews and Tavares deals as comparables rather than non-Leafs. Marner's salary and bonus structure makes that plainly obvious.

This is what I fear will happening

Anything's possible I guess. But it also could be his style of play is simply not effective once everyone settles into playoff hockey. I mean the pressure doesn't seem to bother him for the first 86 games of the season, and when the team has even a little bit of playoff success they gets supported and cheered on like no other which makes most people feel no pressure at all, only elation.

He has to prove it at that time of the year for sure but none of the Leafs core five has had any playoff success which adds to the pressure here while a team like Tampa or some others have veterans who’ve done it. The bottom line to me is this core will never get it done as a group so changes need to be made even if that includes him walking.

At this point, I wouldn't be surprised if he did walk. Can't think of another superstar that's put up with so much undeserved nonsense from their team and fanbase.

It's really disappointing how much this management team has screwed this up, and how toxic this fanbase is, and now it seems like our future largely depends on whether Marner loves the Leafs enough to continue enduring the abuse and disrespect. Hopefully he does...

Tieing the teams whole future to one player is an over reaction. Especially with a group that never wins when it counts. There’s many ways to build a cup contender and the way chosen by Shanny and Dubas doesn’t work.

He’ll pretty much know who is offering what the week before. That’s a big pay difference between him and JT for less goals but 12 more 5 on 5 points. Sure he plays pk but JT has intangibles as well.
