It wasn't even a physical game. It was just a night where binnington robbed the USA. The game itself was tight checking but not a hard hitting game.

They were for told to tone it down and not get hurt. The real game was in Montreal.

It was not a very physical game. The real game in MTL is SCF. This was the tones down game after the owners cried about the injuries. Nobody even attempted to check Marner

Was it me or was that just a tight checking game compared to MTL. Didn't feel like a SCG game at all

I think players were fatigued by yesterday. Its been alot of travel and games.

Mackinnon, Crosby and McDavid were in a league of their own for Team Canada. They play in any type of game, whether it be skill, fast, or physical, and they were always crashing the net and battling for loose pucks. Marner once again was nowhere near the net. Tochett (team canadas a.coach) indicated the line changes were made in game 2 and 3 because the coaches thought they were playing too perimeter. We of course know that Marner was demoted to 3rd line in favor of Point.

Also, Mcdavid wasn't Marners bud (like Matthews) and gave it to Marner on the bench in game 1 and was looking Marner off alot in the final game. The coach, Cooper, wasn't afraid to demote and sit Marner. I think both are key and that Marner needs the tough love.

Let’s see if I get this right
At age 6 he should have had a change in his skating
As evidenced by a professional skating coach on this board

His goal didn’t count as much because it was a 3 on 3 goal

He only excelled in last nights game because t wasn’t as physical as the last game

Team Canada will never ask him back again

An anyone else think of any more of the idiotic takes
On this board

For all you posters that think matthews can do no wrong

Mcdavid was his man. Why was matthews going after marner in the corner. Matthews should know better. Why would you leave the best player in the game all alone in the slot to go after a first pass guy.

you know what, I think this guy might be a top 40 player in the NHL
Regular season he's probably top 10 in a good year, top 20 most years. Playoffs, hard to say.

Happy for Mitch and happy for Canada. It was a great game. He made a couple of sweet plays at the right time. Hopefully this gives him some much needed confidence going forward. He will need to do alot of the heavy lifting in the playoffs if they want to make an impact.
It's amazing that he's in the last year of a megamillions deal, and we're still hoping he finds whatever it is he's missing that prevents him from being a factor when the going get tough. If it's confidence he needs, sure let's hope that's it and he has it now. If it's his style of play that's the issue, then it won't matter.

He was great last night, that was a pretty slick pass on the first goal. The finish on the play was the real highlight but still, very nice pass.
This is exactly it. This was a 4 game tournament, playoffs are a marathon. Success here means nothing as far as success goes in the playoffs, where they will be the main focal points. We can only hope that they gained confidence from this and bring it with them.
It's amazing how the fanboys are planning the parade. It's like November all over again, as if he's not coming off 6 points in 14 games for his last 2 playoff series. He played a fine game, enjoy it but pretending that this one game outweighs years of playoff disappointment is just ... smh.
He had a clutch game, anyone that says otherwise is disingenuous. I've been a critic of re-signing him, and this hasn't swayed me; however it does give me hope that he can build on this in the playoffs this year. I'm happy for him, and glad he had a monster game and defended our national pride! Good on ya Mitch!

Also, I still think we should sign Bennett and let JT walk.
Agree with all this. TBH, my level hope hasn't gone up all that much, despite how the fanboys are all giddy it was just one game. But no matter how bad things get, there's always hope.

He had a great finals in the Four Nations Cup. Let's hope it translates into a great playoffs because that's all that matters. This wasn't the olympics which is more of a grind. NHL playoffs are a grind but Marner and Matthews were both able to find some space for once in such a tight game.
I have 100% confidence in him going into the playoffs, been saying it all year. He has reinvented his game.

It's not about points, it's HOW he's getting them. The way he's been playing all year is completely different than years past. He's not being some passive perimeter player only.

He's getting in the dirty areas, he's being physical, he's battling for pucks and not shying away from contact. All of that, is what's necessary for playoff success.

Last night was probably the biggest game of his career. 1 game, best on best, winner takes all, Canada vs USA. The absolute best of the best and in my opinion, he was the best skater on the ice last night. He showed up big time in an extremely physical game, which was played like a game 7.

Apart from his mistake in the first USA/Canada game with the no look pass on the empty net, he was fantasic this tournament.

I already loved the way he was playing, but he showed up massive in the most difficult and important game of his career. This makes me very optimistic about what to expect from him in the playoffs.

Hats off to Mitch.

Interesting post game from the coach. During the end of first period, I commented Mitch looked good, which was interesting because other guys were slagging his game. Cooper was asked about putting him back with McDavid and he said he could tell "Mitch had legs tonight" so he went with his gut saying "that kid can make plays and he only needs one chance". So, this is his thinking before his first assist, he's already noting who has it, and it shows to look at the game a little deeper.

To be clear, I think he is very talented, but I don't think he is 13 mil worthy. At 8-9, give'er. It's like Having a Lambo in Toronto - you cant drive it in the snow or on most streets (because our roads are garbage) you can't really achieve the full fun factor of the Lambo unless you take it to the track. I blame the salary cap, because otherwise noone here would ever give a shit what he makes.
100% no salary cap and of course have him on the team.

He was demoted for 1.5 games out of 4 by the coaching staff...and Marner fans are celebrating like it didn't happen. He looked meh in game 1-3.

Everything we seen from Marner in the tourny is the exact reason sides are divided.

Colorado walked from Rantanen. Marner still is a Rantanen level player. Hes not Mackinnon, Kucherov but he wants to be paid like them.

A coach stating that he needed to confirm the 5th highest-paid player on the ice "had legs" before promoting him to the top 6 isn’t exactly the glowing endorsement you're making it out to be.

It's going to be the same as always.

The moment the opponent starts bashing heads he will fade and hide. Last night's game was not overly physical, good game and all but it really wasn't as charged as a lot playoff games or the game back in MTL.

Credit to Mitch last night. After not playing so well the first few games and getting demoted, I was expecting him to get in his own head and play poorly, but he played well. A couple of bad decisions but overall he looked better than Stone and deserved to be moved up beside McDavid.

Gives me some more confidence in him come playoffs. Not enough to overwrite 8 years of playoff history, but still promising.

Meh, I think Marner and Matthews lack of leadership abilities were apparent in the tourny. The Tkatchuks, Crosby, Mackinnon and Mcdavid looked like true leaders.

Can't underestimate what it does for the team to see Mackinnon, Mcdavid crashing the net, battling physically, shoving opponents and showing the desperation they do in each game. I was impressed how often Crosby, Mackinnon and Mcdavid were around the goalie.

As someone who has been waiting for what seems like forever for playoff success, I sure hope you're right. That said, two years ago I felt the same confidence you're feeling now only to watch him be great against TB for the first few games, then fade away to the point where he was completely useless against Florida. But again, I hope you're right!!

Full credit for last night, and don't forget that 3on3 goal. I mean sure there's no 3on3 in the playoffs but still, that was a big goal at an important moment!

For me it's HOW he's playing. I don't care about the stat sheet, he's competing and willing to hit and take hits to make a play. He's getting in on the forecheck, these are things he wasn't doing pre-Berube.

The first match looked like the first few games of a playoff series, last night was similar to what a game 7 would look like.

Watching you whine is almost as good as Canada winning...

It was still physical.

Marner was great, sorry it upset you so much.

Mitch did have the best and one of his only ever high level games as an adult. Not a physical game though.

They need a series of 5 or 7 with prize money

This game was like a #7 game for stanley cup final are playing... game playing fast, playing hard with a lot of intensity and deliver. Kind of game, leafs fan constantly blame him to not be good enough

gm In MTL like game 1 to 3-4 where you're trying to send some kind of message, intimidating and all those stuff... Trying to give an extra shot on everytime you can. Not really Marner had been blaming in the past
