It really depends what they meant. If they say "I told you so" - what is it that they were saying?

If someone said Marner's been a playoff disappointment but he's gonna be great this spring, you just watch, well then they could say I told you so.

If someone has been polluting the Marner threads for years with talk of how super crazy elite he is, and thinks that one good playoff means that everything they've been saying is now proven to be correct, then no.

I thought Sid was pretty bad last night but he was one of our best forwards by xGF%, I suppose the turnover for the goal sticks out, and a few other bad plays with the puck. Marner was our worst I think at 5v5 xGF% but not really to blame for a 5v5 goal against. I thought he played ok, in the desired cap paradigm where players' per game salary is determined by their ranking in the league's hierarchy of top players he would have definitely deserved to drop a few spots
He was pretty bad last night.

Trust your eyes and brain and forget about those fancy stats.

The caps waited 12 years with Ovechkin to finally win the cup. Why didn’t they get rid of him?
1. Comparing Marner to the soon to be greatest goal scorer in NHL history is sheer lunacy. Ovi besides being the greatest goal scorer in NHL history is also a physical beast who hits like a mack truck while Marner …. Well enough said about the poor comparison.

2. Washington didn’t have five players taking 61% of their salary cap and could build a deep enough team to win the cup which the Leafs have never been able to do because they overpay a few offensively talented but soft forwards too much money. Continuing to do that will result in more playoff failure.

3. Washington had more playoff success than the Leafs had with their core group and got out of the first round of the playoffs four times in their first eight tries while the Leafs have only done it once.

4. Washington recognized their shortcomings and made a lot of significant changes to their roster to build a bigger, tougher team that could go four rounds in the two month war known as the NHL playoffs. The Leafs have stuck with the same core group of five players who collectively can’t get it done in the playoffs.

5. Hockey is true team game where being able to roll four deep lines over a long playoff run is critical to team success unlike the NBA where a few star players who each play 80-90% of the game is enough to win a championship. The Leafs can’t even put together three competent lines forget four. See #2 above.

Define played well? I would say he has played. Like he is there physically but done nothing except in 3on3 and on the PP last game.
Earned his ice time. Clutch goal in OT vs Swe. 2nd most ice time for forwards and played well against USA created and and was a good part of his line. He wasn't perfect. He didn't fight and didn’t register a hit. Each team had 4 players not to register a hit. He wasn't a liability.

Difference being Crosby rarely looks bad and also is 38. Marner always looks bad and is in his prime.
Neither of those things are true. Against USA Crosby did have the turnover that lead to the GWG and Marner didn't register a hit, but it was a solid and competitive game. USA was just better on the night. Hopefully, we will see a rematch in the final.

It’s pretty obvious at this point, people who have defended Mitch up to this point are just hoping they finally figure it out after 8 years. If they do, they will be the first to say I told you so, but if they fail again, they will find the convenient excuses they have shovelled up to this point.
If they bust for a ninth straight year you'd have to be a stamp collector to want to see the same core for another eight - getting close to some form of torture.

You are also defending your hero in multiple threads so keep fighting the good fight

Matty is less than a year removed from 69 goals and these mercurial people are out in full force, tearing down what ever player they deemed has slighted them. I bet players can't wait to not be perfect for 2 seconds... mmm lets ahe people that are not fit to carry my jock strap tell me how much I suck and how to play the game the right way... some basement dweller fools on this forum.

So you are OK to pay him more than Matty and running them back next year, even if they are punted in round 1 or 2?

Winston Churchill said, “Those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.”

Sure looks like not many Leaflanders agree with him or have some learning to do.
Just saying let him go and all you're left with is a handful of pixie dust and a wishlist. It could be that all those UFAs may want to play in Toronto ONLY IF the Leafs are paying big time coin, and outbidding the others, and isn't that the exact reason they're in the spot they're in? That is paying guys a lot more than their worth?

Lets face it, our Bud's are between a rock and a hard place and they(Dubas mostly) did it to themselves.

The only way out IMO is by offloading 1 or 2 of those contracts and hope that what comes back in trade is better than what would maybe come back to the team in UFA. Seriously is letting Marner walk for nothing really going to help, or does it just decrease our assets further.

Marners value as an asset right now is zilch. Our collective asset pool is Cowan, Minten, and some stuff. We're keeping Knies.

In each of the last eight years is there any year that we wouldn't have made the playoffs if we swapped out Marner for a half priced UFA? We couldn't have done worse in the playoffs.

If the team busts this year and Marner doesn't work for a ninth time, running it back is a losers game and would only bolster the losing culture further.

We can't be as scared as Shanny already looks.
