Player Discussion Mitch Marner Part Infinity

Apparently he might take a discount to sign with Vegas. That's what some trade board geniuses have said.

It wouldnt be a "discount", make no mistake it will be the most Vegas is willing to give him.

Marner requirements in order:
1) 2-3 year contract
2) elite forward to ride coat-tails
3) Maximum AAV/low tax location
4) Championship level team
5) Wear a Letter

I think Vegas is one of the few teams that checks most of the boxes. If they trade Karlsson it opens a potential A.

A million off a 2-3 year deal per year isnt gonna matter much. He stands to make 30-50% more by getting a 2-3 year deal and then getting an 8 year deal.

True. The low tax situation is probably on his radar.

I can't wait for the post-season comments when the cheques (and Mitch) run out.

Pietro LTIR opens up a letter for him too.

Look forward to seeing the growing pains between Marner’s wizard style and Bruce Cassidy’s hard and heavy style.
Agreed, he called out Pastrnak in the past for his play and Krecji reportedly left the NHL because he hated playing for him (if I recall correctly).

Wonder what the over/under will be set at for no-look-spin-a-roony-backhand-shovel-passes-into-the-middle-of-the-ice-from-your-own-zone next season.

I'd probably take the under.

Marner might be in for quite the surprise when his next teams tells him to put on his big boy pants and engage physically and get off the sidelines, or ride the pine on the bench.

Leafs have handled Mitch with kid gloves mentioning his not so thick skin and delicate approach, often due to perceived sensitivity or importance and with extreme care.

Why would any smart GM self inflict damage on his own team for possibly only short-term gain without any guarantees?

Only a GM with "more cap space than brains" (likely a desperate bottom feeder), with nothing to lose.

In leagues with a salary cap, its not hard to criticize a team or individual for making poor decisions related to player contracts or team building, who prioritize spending money over strategic planning. A team that is throwing money at players without considering long-term consequences or team fit, suggests a lack of foresight or intelligence in their management behalf, will deserving what they get in the end.

No doubt some GM will spend harder rather than smarter, and then elevate player ceiling salaries for only the NHLPA benefit of all future players to follow, while in turn hurting not only their own teams competitiveness, but sadly also all others attempting common sense cost controlling measures trying to make their own teams successful and not players RICH !!.

"One bad apple spoils the bunch".

Well Mitch certainly is not gonna ditch 13.5 million from the 8th year he would have got here, to go and sign 7 years in Vegas.

My guess is Marners team is the ones releasing he is likely to sign in Vegas, to drive up fear for other GMs ahead of UFA. Otherwise its tampering...unless Tree has allowed Marner to speak to other teams in case of a sign and trade opportunity. Which def is a possibility.
