Player Discussion Mitch Marner Part Infinity

The tone deafness is just so wild to me. For a guy who has a reputation for being so talented but a fixture on a fundamentally underachiever team, his UFA flex is to flaunt how he’s going to be the belle of the ball, take his royal visit to mid July to teams, to grant the Leafs one limited meeting, and pursue exotically short deals so he can cash in once more. Of course he’s within his right to pursue those things and chase after whatever but this would be a little much if this was the 90s and it was someone like Alexei Yashin pulling this stuff, let alone a hometown kid.
Hopefully it’s true that Treliving passed on the offer to negotiate during UFA.

That must have come as a shock to Marner.

I think his plan/goal all along was to get a two-year deal and stay a Leaf but on his terms of course:

first go into UFA, get wined and dined so he and his dad could feel like he’s a superstar and respected.

Also, put on a little show for Leaf fans who "don’t appreciate how coveted he is,” and probably Pauls friends and enemies ;)

and then apply pressure to the team by leaking news of big offers from other clubs.

In the process, land that two-year deal he wants, a permanent A, maybe squeeze out a bit more money than initially offered by Leafs, and return to Toronto as the big-hearted hometown boy whose love for the city just wouldn’t let him leave, plus, the whole “unfinished business” storyline around winning a Cup. And of course at that point, the Marner household would feel everything in the world is right again.

Basically, a full repeat of last time, tjis time UFA version.

You guys who like Marner got to realize he bombs out in the playoffs every year. And that's bad. Not just for him, but since he's a key cog in the offence zipping around and passing to set up goals. So once he fades away it affects other players too. That's a reason why Leafs tank in the playoffs. And he tanks at the worst time (late in a series when either team is trying to close out the series) where he almost always does a highlight reel turnover leading to the other team scoring to win games.

It's not like he's a third liner who gets 30 pts in the reg season. If he fades in the playoffs who really cares. He's not expected to help offence anyway and him averaging less pts in the playoffs isnt going to affect his linemates much either.

So what you guys like about him is he helps the team rack up reg season scoring so the Leafs always easily make the playoffs getting about 100-110 pt seasons, while avg about 100 pt seasons where his stat line will be about 30-70-100.

What value is a player worth if hes a consistent reg season stud, but a playoff tanker, who helps sink the other forwards on his line too? Because right now, Leafs had him worth $11M. And by the looks of it, he'll want more than that in the open maket. So he's probably going to want $12-13M.

He's won more than anyone else in the core................. what does that say about Nylander and Matthews?
Nothing. I’d get rid of them too but we’ve spent 10 years arguing about just getting rid of one of the core, it’s a chore discussing getting rid of them all.
I give it 3 years until Matthews leaves then we can start the rebuild. People wanted us to be Chicago when we started this build, but we are San Jose.

I don't care that Marner is not coming back, I just find it funny how much he gets labelled things like "loser" when he is the winningest out of all of them.

Change is at least interesting, so I am all for it, but I hope they improve, because I have my doubts.

Also, they aren't even SJ.

Agreed. I think San Jose got to the finals once.

Dude c'mon, that response was the weakness that I disappointingly expected. So for the record your perspective is, not showing up in the playoffs is only important when you got a hate on for a player. Correct? What you are saying is; winning a team championship is immaterial as long as you have individual awards. Gotchya...

I'm not so much a Marner supporter, it's time we make some tangible changes on the team, as I am an anti-bullshit supporter. For the most part, the people you see challenging your tangent filled tirades, are not what you'd call Marner supporters.
Cool story Darren.

At the end of the season I thought there was something to the cheap theatrics and run it back hypothesis but maybe the Leafs weren’t amenable and that caused a real rift.

Whatever it is that he wants hindsight tells me he could have just asked the Leafs for the exit door if he wanted it or if he wanted an exotic short contract he could have asked for that and grinded them down. Good faith negotiating in any case probably would have saved him a lot of reputational damage. Whatever I guess. Price to pay to stick it to someone I guess.

You lost me. But then, it seems like you're lost yourself so ...

Okay, well, let me educate you... Memorial Cup and 4 Nations is more than anyone else in the core has won.

For starters, teams win, not players. And in the NHL playoffs, Marner's good for the first few games and then he plays like a loser the rest of the way. The bigger the game, the smaller he plays.

You know why that is? It's because he's a loser, simple as that. And LOL Memorial Cup, who cares? Are you trying to convince that Marner's game is built for junior hockey?

Unfortunately that shit doesn't transfer to the NHL playoffs.
Matthew Tkachuk was Marner's linemate in London when they won the Memorial Cup.
&
Brad Marchand was Marner's teammate for Canada at the 4 Nations tournament.

Both those guys turned their performances into Stanley Cups.

What that shows its not the team you played on, but the style of the player that is transferable to successful playoff hockey.

Winners are always going shine, because the"cream always rises to the top" as exceptional people will eventually be recognized and rewarded for their quality, and that true excellence will eventually become apparent, just like the way cream naturally separates from milk and floats to the surface.

William Nylander has a gold medal from the World Championship, which happens to be a) against adults and b) wasn't the All-Star Game replacement. Also won the MVP in that tournament.

The good news is he's a Leaf.

World Championship is a useless tournament, especially relative to the 4 Nations...

Kucherov has 0 points in game 7s... bigger loser than Marner I guess... Or, is it different for some players?

I mentioned the 4 Nations where he was arguably the best player in the biggest game, but I know you ignored that because it doesn't help your argument.

you guys getting a marner mighty duck jersey?
Yes just so I can throw it on the ice when he returns.

4 Nations with 4 teams lol. Something to celebrate when Canada beats Sweden, Finland and the USA who are known for their winning traditions in International tournaments.

4 Nations is better than a tournament that isn't the best players for their country, yes.

Feel free to make a poll asking if the 4 Nations or the WC is better hockey.

When 3 of the 4 teams are ranked 3rd, 6th and 7th in the world rankings I'd say that's quite impressive that they won the 4 Nations. Russia hasn't been able to compete in 3 years and still ranked ahead of all these teams. Should maybe watch the WC once in a while because it's actually very good hockey. Only thing better about the 4 Nations was it was NHL rules and not IIHF rules.
