Hopefully it’s true that Treliving passed on the offer to negotiate during UFA.The tone deafness is just so wild to me. For a guy who has a reputation for being so talented but a fixture on a fundamentally underachiever team, his UFA flex is to flaunt how he’s going to be the belle of the ball, take his royal visit to mid July to teams, to grant the Leafs one limited meeting, and pursue exotically short deals so he can cash in once more. Of course he’s within his right to pursue those things and chase after whatever but this would be a little much if this was the 90s and it was someone like Alexei Yashin pulling this stuff, let alone a hometown kid.
That must have come as a shock to Marner.
I think his plan/goal all along was to get a two-year deal and stay a Leaf but on his terms of course:
first go into UFA, get wined and dined so he and his dad could feel like he’s a superstar and respected.
Also, put on a little show for Leaf fans who "don’t appreciate how coveted he is,” and probably Pauls friends and enemies

and then apply pressure to the team by leaking news of big offers from other clubs.
In the process, land that two-year deal he wants, a permanent A, maybe squeeze out a bit more money than initially offered by Leafs, and return to Toronto as the big-hearted hometown boy whose love for the city just wouldn’t let him leave, plus, the whole “unfinished business” storyline around winning a Cup. And of course at that point, the Marner household would feel everything in the world is right again.
Basically, a full repeat of last time, tjis time UFA version.
