Captaincy Decision May Have Played a Role in Mitch Marner's Decision to Leave the Maple Leafs​

On Thursday's edition of TSN 1050's 'First Up', Aaron Korolnek and Dave Feschuk discussed Marner's decision to leave with Feschuk noting that the decision to name Auston Matthews captain caused a stir between Marner's camp and the Leafs.

"There have been multiple expressions of a feeling of lack of respect from the Marner camp over his time in Toronto. We saw his dad talk about it at some point, why isn't he considered for the captaincy. We know that there has been a lot of back and forth with management about 'why did Auston Matthews get this and why didn't I get this' - and all good arguments... There is a certain aspect of his camp and the way he has carried himself that says he hasn't had quite enough alpha dog treatment and this is his moment to get it."​

Yup, said that from the start that it would bother him. He’s always seen himself equal to Matthews but this year everyone made it clear he is not.

Matthews was named captain over him, after the team prioritized signing Matthews immediately with Nylander all while trying to trade Marner to Vegas when the opportunity arose. At the 4 nations and now olympics Marner was not selected first unlike Matthews and Nylander. Fans have turned on him even though he saw himself as our god (although in fairness to him, one or two people on this board do weirdly treat him like a god).

I noted this a couple weeks ago that Marner im sure was peeved that Matthews was given the C and Marner was left still sharing the A, this time with Reilly, instead of Matthews.

Im sure Marner and "his camp" AKA...his daddy...thought Tavares should be the one sharing the A and him graduating to a permanent letter like Matthews.

..id include his dog in his camp, but Marner let us know that his dog doesnt know a damn thing about hockey...so hes in the clear.

This whining spoiled little egotistical brat may not be realizing it but his departure might be the very door that opens the opportunity for Connor McDavid to come home following next season.

The money saved not to keep Marner can be earmarked for another local hero to come home. McDavid in his ending presser left that door ajar slightly.

On Thursday, as the Oilers addressed reporters at their locker cleanout day, the superstar center offered little insight on his future, with his current contract set to expire at the end of the 2025-26 season.

“We’re all in this together, trying to get it over that finish line. But with that being said, I still need to do what’s best for me and my family,” he said, knowing he will be eligible to sign a new contract with Edmonton as of July 1. “That’s who you have to take care of first.”

This is the conundrum.

I don't see the conundrum. Without him we may not win the division, but we should still make the playoffs easily enough.

I said from the day Dubas signed the Marner deal it was unfair to Mitch as he’d never be able to live up to the deal.

I would have moved him.

You have to be dumb to not move Marner before the NMC.
