Player Discussion Mitch Marner Part Infinity

Based on rumours Leafs look to have offered 13-13.5 over 8 years. Surely someone will offer 14-15 in free agency and over 4-5 years. Since his goal is to get a short deal to cash in again (honestly just typing this tells me the kinda guy he is) there is no June 30th deadline for him even if the Leafs are his choice. The old metric when we signed Tavares was that if his deal wasn’t announced on the 30th he’s gone as the Islanders can offer the 8th year anymore. That isn’t the same narrative for Marner. He could sign a 4 year deal even August 1st with the Leafs if they are his first choice.
We don’t know that is his goal.

This week, Nick Kypreos penned a Toronto Star column encouraging Maple Leafs fans not to vilify Mitch Marner if he walks away this summer as a UFA. In the piece, he also argues that the Maple Leafs haven’t given Marner any reason to trust the organization’s loyalty.

Kypreos specifically cites the recent examples of Mikko Rantanen and Brad Marchand:

Kypreos also attempts to construct a “The Leafs aren’t loyal to Marner” narrative to justify the Marner camp’s approach, but unsurprisingly, he is forced to reach for evidence — to the point where he takes a random Treliving quote out of context.

That’s rich coming from Kyper. He’s been a Marner mouthpiece for years.

You're still the same too Shanwhatplan - wrong, and quick to insults and name-calling. Matthews and Marner were not overpaid on their previous contracts, and more importantly to this discussion, Matthews' previous contract has no relevance to Marner's current ask. Treliving signed Matthews. Treliving signed Nylander. GMs sign players, not Presidents, so if you're going to make these abnormal claims, the burden of proof is on you. The common denominator here is you not understanding what players are worth. Treliving can absolutely do worse than Shanahan, and he's already well on his way to doing so.

You’re right, he is well on his way, signing Nylander and Matthews to those insane contracts. Thank goodness he’s not going to make the same mistake with Marner, who has been so good whenever he does the interviews with reporters after games (talk about smugness and the entitlement so that he, like Matthews and Nylander, never has to accept any blame after losses).
I have finally come to not blame Marner for wanting as much as he can get. He did it before, just like the other two. I put the blame squarely on the shoulders of management, because they never had the balls to draw a line in the sand with these greedy core three.
You can say Marner’s worth at least $14 million and I can say $12 million at the most. So what? You’re judging by the standards you think are right. Well guess what, I’m doing the same. You come up with all these metrics that you think define the player. Please tell me how you are positive that that is the way most/all GMs do that before signing a player? And don’t respond with “I didn’t say that”. Especially since your posts are “gospel” because you’re always right, but that is only in YOUR mind.

See ya Marner.... you have to earn respect to get it.

It is obvious that Marner does not have the balls to handle the pressures that come in playing in the Toronto market. He ends up in California some place so he can play his game a collect checks. His priority is not a cup. You will see.
I just can’t understand why everyone doesn’t see that!

A thumbs up is a yellow emoji hand with four fingers closed and a thumb sticking up. Typically given in sincere agreement with a post or occasionally in ridicule.
Oh, those small pictures. I don't know why one poster's thumbs up would be any different than another's.

Captaincy Decision May Have Played a Role in Mitch Marner's Decision to Leave the Maple Leafs

On Thursday's edition of TSN 1050's 'First Up', Aaron Korolnek and Dave Feschuk discussed Marner's decision to leave with Feschuk noting that the decision to name Auston Matthews captain caused a stir between Marner's camp and the Leafs.

"There have been multiple expressions of a feeling of lack of respect from the Marner camp over his time in Toronto. We saw his dad talk about it at some point, why isn't he considered for the captaincy. We know that there has been a lot of back and forth with management about 'why did Auston Matthews get this and why didn't I get this' - and all good arguments... There is a certain aspect of his camp and the way he has carried himself that says he hasn't had quite enough alpha dog treatment and this is his moment to get it."

I hear the best way to earn a captaincy is to be aggressively jealous of a teammate…

He’s got thin skin and a big ego. That combo never ends well.

Matthews isn’t a great captain from what we’ve seen so far but you can’t have your second best guy fly off the handle in a fit of jealousy like that.

It’s hard to even understand how you can be that jealous of your “friend” on the team, close like brothers and harbour that kind of bitterness. And still insist on being on the same line together.

Who knows what will happen in free agency but this team is going to be a lot more mature without Marner.

I'd think the incident where he tried to break into a girl's car while she was inside of it would have been a good indication he might not be captain material, but what do I know.

I wonder how much Nick costs...

hard to imagine him in another jersey. I have said multiple times we need changes but Marner walking for nothing isnt the answer.

if he doesnt extend after rejecting the trade for Rantanen (even though I dont think he would have extended with us) will likely make Marner the most booed player in Toronto since Vince Carter
Marner at 13-14 for 4-8 years is not the answer either

Regular-season amazing Mitch gets your team comfortably into the playoffs.
Post-season invisible Mitch requires others to step in to fill the huge vacuum, and no Leaf can; there are no Bennetts or Marchands on our roster.

This is the conundrum.

The problem with the Marner camp is they will always feel disrespected by Everyone and everything.

Why is it the “Marner camp”. What other player is referred to by agent/parent.

It’s nuts
I wondered that too lol. Its so Marner can blame others if something comes back and bites him. Like his negotiations... he always acts like his negotiations are left completely in Ferris' hands and he has no say.

Ferris told me about the offersheet and I told him i dont even want to see it, I want to be a Leaf.

Sure wish he had taken this imaginary offer sheet

I'd say this is the "dna change" Tre talks about. Yep, just pull the f****** bandaid off and move on.

Yep. Get rid of one of the big four and show the team you mean business. If Marner hasn't figured out the playoffs yet or is too lazy to put in the effort, a richer contract won't miraculously fix that.
