Player Discussion Mitch Marner Part Infinity

never really liked him but for me it became a serious dislike in the 23/24 season during an overtime game.

willie scored one of those o/t goals where he beat a defender then the goalie, a real beauty ... the camera went to the bench, the players were all smiles jumping over the boards ... except mitchy, he was slowly walking along the bench and staring daggers at willie as if he resented him for scoring ... told me all i needed to know about mitchy.
Never a good look.

He’s not leaving for money.

Sounds like he is if he’s giving the Leafs a meeting. That meeting will likely be to share the best offer and see if Leafs want to (or are desperate enough to) match. There’s been 0 communication from the Leafs or Marner so it’s all speculation but one can assume he’s using reverse negotiating. Find the price you like, bring it to the team you want to play for.

hard to imagine him in another jersey. I have said multiple times we need changes but Marner walking for nothing isnt the answer.

if he doesnt extend after rejecting the trade for Rantanen (even though I dont think he would have extended with us) will likely make Marner the most booed player in Toronto since Vince Carter

Rantanen was willing to sign here. Toronto was reported to be one of his four preferred destinations

He could have accepted the trade for Rantanen and still re-signed here.

Fair enough but if were just money he would have already taken their offer, he won’t make more anywhere else.

Looks like he just wants out.

Good husband and teammate wouldn’t jump ship just because.

Based on rumours Leafs look to have offered 13-13.5 over 8 years. Surely someone will offer 14-15 in free agency and over 4-5 years. Since his goal is to get a short deal to cash in again (honestly just typing this tells me the kinda guy he is) there is no June 30th deadline for him even if the Leafs are his choice. The old metric when we signed Tavares was that if his deal wasn’t announced on the 30th he’s gone as the Islanders can offer the 8th year anymore. That isn’t the same narrative for Marner. He could sign a 4 year deal even August 1st with the Leafs if they are his first choice.

How do you know? Do you have any pertinent information to share?

Captaincy Decision May Have Played a Role in Mitch Marner's Decision to Leave the Maple Leafs

On Thursday's edition of TSN 1050's 'First Up', Aaron Korolnek and Dave Feschuk discussed Marner's decision to leave with Feschuk noting that the decision to name Auston Matthews captain caused a stir between Marner's camp and the Leafs.

"There have been multiple expressions of a feeling of lack of respect from the Marner camp over his time in Toronto. We saw his dad talk about it at some point, why isn't he considered for the captaincy. We know that there has been a lot of back and forth with management about 'why did Auston Matthews get this and why didn't I get this' - and all good arguments... There is a certain aspect of his camp and the way he has carried himself that says he hasn't had quite enough alpha dog treatment and this is his moment to get it."

The guy self described himself as being treated like a deity in this city 12 months earlier lol

A consistent trend throughout Marner's entire time with the team has been an inability to be smart about PR, and this certainly shows zero signs of ending during his final couple weeks lol. Putting crap like this out in the media is just pouring fuel on the fire, he's getting a healthy chorus of boos during his next game at Scotia Bank. Hopefully he enjoys himself wherever out West he ends up.

Marner wants respect and the fans want a Cup. I don't see this relationship continuing... thankfully.

The guy is likely not even touching his principle income and living off interest alone. Really don’t understand why he needs the highest bidder vs just staying in his home town at a reasonable rate.

He hates the city and organization, and the feeling appears to be mutual. Works out well.

Sad when fans have to boo a player because he didn’t waive. Childish really. Players fulfilling their contact and using the full NMC they were given by management shows no disrespect to fans or management.

Marner may resign here or not. It’s his choice. Fans can claim the leafs have no interest but they do. It’s all about the money and to a lot of athletes in all the major sports it is about making as much as you can because none of those Athletes know how long their career will be.

Agents represent their clients.

And who cares what Marner would have fetched during the trade deadline. He wasn’t going to waive. Blame management around the league handing out full no movement clauses like candy. Tre isn’t any better…he gave 88 and 34 the same full NMC. Will we cry when both those players refuse to waive?

Too funny …every Tom, Dick and Harry behind a mic now has inside sources and now it’s that Marner was pissed he wasn’t captain? And fans think this jibberish is gospel?

TO mediots causing a stir , fabricate stuff to rile up the minions

LMFAO 🤣

And people around the world still wonder why a clown is a president.

The whiny whataboutism from Marner with regards to Matthews and Nylander is red flag to me and says so much about his maturity and character and lack thereof.

Don’t get me wrong. I don’t want him back but the childishness is just so fitting here and so loathsome.
When reporters caught up to Marner today, and asked about his childishness and maturity this is what Mitch had to say.

Yup, he certainly doesn't look happy, with how things are unfolding. :wg:

The petulance is just so on brand for this guy. And we can’t blame PR. Since PR is just an extension of this guy.

If he wanted to be respected as that special Leaf in his little speech to the fanbase, why not live that truth and be that special player, live up to the privileges the organization gave you. Accept the blame when things go wrong. Learn. Evolve. Overcome. Lead the team to success and prove you’re better than the other two.

But no, he’s gotta lash out, leak out drama, fight with the hometown and also punish the franchise that stood by him.

Don’t get me wrong. I don’t want him back but the childishness is just so fitting here and so loathsome.
You mean you weren’t inspired to run through walls when Marner yelled at the bench with disgust and disdain?

Can’t imagine why that type of attitude isn’t garnering petitions to stay and lead our poor club.

This week, Nick Kypreos penned a Toronto Star column encouraging Maple Leafs fans not to vilify Mitch Marner if he walks away this summer as a UFA. In the piece, he also argues that the Maple Leafs haven’t given Marner any reason to trust the organization’s loyalty.

Kypreos specifically cites the recent examples of Mikko Rantanen and Brad Marchand:

Kypreos: The NHL used to be a place where loyalty reigned supreme.

But with the likes of Brad Marchand and Mikko Rantanen changing teams this trade season, it reminded us loyalty has become a relic of the NHL’s past. When free agency rolls around July 1, we’ll see if there’s any left between Mitch Marner and the Maple Leafs.

We are in an era where teams are comfortable cutting longtime captains loose. An era where homegrown stars and Stanley Cup champions can be traded over relatively small salary disputes. And an era where players will, more often than not, prioritize their own career trajectories and bank accounts over the good of the team.

In my day, Mario Lemieux, Steve Yzerman, Nicklas Lidström and Joe Sakic were the gold standard of players who bled the colours of one team throughout their careers. That two-way loyalty between a player and his team seems rare these days.

… Marner has said for years that he loves playing for the Leafs. Nine seasons into his NHL career, that hometown loyalty may no longer be enough. And why should it be?

Kypreos also attempts to construct a “The Leafs aren’t loyal to Marner” narrative to justify the Marner camp’s approach, but unsurprisingly, he is forced to reach for evidence — to the point where he takes a random Treliving quote out of context.

Kypreos: Marner’s refusal to negotiate a new deal or waive his no-move clause sparked backlash from Leafs fans, but his decisions aren’t unjustified. He has every right to question the Leafs’ loyalty to him.

Just last summer, when GM Brad Treliving was asked about Marner’s future in Toronto and keeping the core group together, his response was simply: “Everything is on the table.”

It was a far cry from two summers ago, when Auston Matthews and William Nylander were in similar contract situations. Treliving spoke publicly about the chances of re-signing his stars. “I’m confident we’re going to get both players signed,” he said.
