What if… Marner was a mature superstar player and just said “yeah I will take the lions share of the blame because screw it I’m this team’s Yzerman. Not AM34, not Willie, this is my team and I’m going to put the Leafs on my back?”
That possible?
Pressure is a privilege. Being blamed comes with being seen as your teams leaders, that's a compliment, not a curse.
So… Marner and his camp were upset he wasn’t named captain, yet he also doesn’t want to take on the blame when things go wrong?
while Tavares wore the C, it’s been Marner and Matthews who were the true faces of this team. They got paid on RFA deals like elite franchise players—deals that Tavares never even came close to as an RFA when he was younger or most other players other than games elite.
Matthews has largely delivered on those expectations: a Hart Trophy, a Ted Lindsay, three Rocket Richards, and an iconic 69-goal season.
Marner hasn’t. And to make matters worse, he’s consistently terrible in front of the media, something that’s part of the job when you're positioned as a franchise player.
He wants the spotlight, the paycheck, the status but not the responsibility and criticism that come with it. You can't have it both ways.
he is where he is because of of his actions not because hes being treated unfairly, Matthees, Tavares and nylander are very good at avoiding bad sound bites, Marner pushes back because he thinks he is being treated unfairly and is above the treatment, constantly saying all these things:
- I hate social media
- you guys expect us to score 10 points a night or something.
- We dont care what you think
- I like going home to my dog because he doesnt know anything about what I do and he loves me for being his dad.
- and I thought we played good, I really did
- the stanley cup is the hardest thing to win for a reason
- I find sticks down low, thats my game (response to berube saying he needs to shoot)
- we are treated like gods
ON and ON and On....
Two consecutive years where he blamed his teammates for playoff losses? Yep, some leader.
