Were any other "superstar" players not chosen for the team, in favor of Reinhart, Point and Marchand before?

He is now firmly in a group of players that includes Hagel, Cirelli, Marchand, Konecny, Wilson, Hyman.... fighting for the remaining positions.

Yet..made 11 million the past 6 years and wants 14+ now.

The difference is that unless these 6 players are injured and can’t play in the Olympics, they will be on the team even if they have like 5 Goals and 11 pts before the tournament. Where as guys that are not chosen will need to maintain their plays bc if they have a slow start and don’t have the stats to back it up, they might not be able to make the team.

An example would be Hyman. His slow start this year cost him a spot on the 4 Nations team. If he was on his pace the season before, or was elected as one of the six players, he would had played for Team Canada.

Words mean nothing when your actions don't say the same thing. He says what he has to get the media to stop asking him about it. He never wanted to stay and played the team acting like he did. Did the same thing Tavares did to the Islanders.

In season signing is a distraction now to the player? When it's his agent that does all that and he just has to give 20 minutes of his time to go into the office and sign the contract. Nylander held out half a season and signed for 400K more than what we reportedly wanted to sign him for. Now that's a bad GM right there. He was crucified here because he held out that long and guess who is the only one who outplayed their contract by a lot and then also signed for 8 years on his next contract.

Again, if it's a distraction to reply to a text once in a while from an agent during the season then that's just sad and pathetic. I think getting a deal over with would get rid of any distraction, especially if like you said he wants to really stay here and only here.

A player that wants to really stay somewhere gets a deal done whenever. 2 reason they don't. 1 is they don't actually want to be there and 2 is they only care about maxing out every penny they can get. Gm gave him offers that were easy to accept and get rid of those distractions and gave him an out in terms of a trade. Keep telling yourself he wanted to be here because complaining about distractions while being the one creating those distractions is just a dumb excuse for him.

There’s clearly an obstructionist, non cooperative, and bad faith stance Marner has handled this Leafs situation with. Can’t really get away from that and blame the GM and toxicity of the market when you’re offered to exit but won’t waive.

We're watching a marquee local player leaving for nothing, without even engaging in dialogue with the team.
We saw the current cup champions and 3-time finalists throw a pity party for how difficult Toronto is to play in.

Whatever your thoughts are on the idea that Toronto is/isn't a hard place to play, is irrelevant - it's already out there that this place is hard to play in, and continues to spread. And it's begun to seep it's way into player decisions.

This goes beyond the Marner situation too - ROR didn't resign here. David Perron, when offered the exact same deal, chose the quieter Ottawa market. Matt Roy opted for Washington instead of Toronto.

Stop pretending like it isn't a glaring problem staring the Leafs right in the face.

Marner and this core knew changes were coming if they failed again. This idea that toxicity is the reason why players won't sign here is a bit ridiculous since any person with a huge following or on a sports team is gonna deal with that. It just gets exposed more in Toronto and bigger markets.

You ever think these players didn't sign here because they thought this team just wasn't it and thought they'd have a better chance somewhere else or because some are americans who would rather play in the USA. These athletes love their endorsements and the money that comes with it but hate being the talk of the city for the biggest sports team in the league that helps them get those sponsorships and extra money. What do they expect?

Yeah. GM gets hired 1 month before his NMC kicks in after the previous GM that signed him tried to snake Shanahan. Lets blame the current GM though when the last GM caused unnecessary drama last offseason and now this player doing it this season.

The Olympic Team put down implies the nation doesn’t value Marner as one of its top 6 players when money isn’t even an object and most of the guys selected don’t even approach $14 million in real salary, not that he won’t squeak in eventually.

Think about what Bill Guerin did in Minnesota, another playoff failure team that struggled to ever get out of the first round. He spent big money and took a massive cap penalty to get rid of two home state guys via buyout in Parise and Suter. Think about what the Rangers have done with Trouba and Kreider. Turfed. Think about what Boston did for Brad Marchand in their first non playoff season in ages. Showed captain the door.

I think offers to players that aren’t put to paper are all suspect. It easy for some “insider” to start stories

The foundation may continue. I’m not sure what rules apply to charitable foundations but I’m sure moneys already in trust accounts and received will have to be dealt with but the main focal point “Marner” will be missing.

It's funny they link Marner to Vegas when they are the most cut throat org in the NHL and won't put up with him and the team failing as much as the Leafs have.

If I am the Leafs, I release Marner now so he can talk to any team he wants.

Its the best way possible to give him a chance to find a deal before July 1 that just might be 8 years. Which is the only way you can really get anything for him. It would be better if you could trade the negotiation rights, but if he is planning to meet with teams on the 1st you need to find a way to move up the timeline.

Yea in this case Marner again was passed over in favor of 8.6 million dollar Reinhart.

Just a few years ago Marner fans said he was better than Kucherov, Rantanen, Eichel, Tkatchuk.

In less than a year, Team Canada has picked Point, Marchand and Sam Reinhart over him.

Need any more evidence that Marner has been incredibly overrated? Clearly he is not the superstar some for years believed he was and apparently still do.

Its gets even more disgusting if we compare his career % earnings to those guys.

No, in this case Marchand was passed over. Rienhart for Marchand is the only change between the 4 nations and the olympics first 6. For Marner it is status quo.

Wish Marner all the best. When they were beat out the writing was on the wall.

However he could of at least engaged with the Leafs. Maybe it's bs but seems like it's legit. He gone.

Could of made a deal with them... maybe even a sign and trade (wishful thinking)... but he's just going to walk.

He's leaving behind what could of been a legacy and multiple leaf records.

I heard maybe he only signs a 4 year deal today too lol... if that happens... that's him and Matthews joining a team down the road.. its like Miami years back in the NBA... lol.

Getting ahead of myself but wouldn't f***ing surprise me at this point.
