Player Discussion Mitch Marner Part Infinity

Let’s say MM signs for 11.5mil(Willie’s contract)
And Holmberg or whichever 4th liner at 1mil.
That’s 12.5mil.

Instead of that, you use 8.5mil to sign Brock Boser, who is a better goal scorer but not a better overall player than MM, esp on PK and defence. But you use the remaining 4 mil to sign Brown or Tanev.

Which combo is better for the Leafs at the same caphit, Boeser and Brown/Tanev or MM and an average 4th liner?
I have no issue signing Boeser and move Willy to left wing. Find an appropriate 2C through trade, we can move Carlo for the right deal.
Knies-Matthews-Domi
Nylander-C-Boeser
Much different look.

Holmberg and Marner by about 10x.

Every signing consists of those and many other variables to consider other than money and term. Free agency is in the offseason, after players have had weeks to months home with their family focusing on these variables.

He did. Sounds like he screwed it up.

You're definitely in the 14m range for a player like Marner and a 95.5m cap, and it should have been easily manageable in this rapidly rising cap environment.
14 mil? Lol, are you leafs fan or dubas and marner fan?

He’s getting Shanahaned. Both contracts expired, the next contracts were continently lost.

By all reports, Tre tried, Marner said wait, they didn't wait, and that is the reason it didn't work.

None of the big reporters reported anything other than Tre tried from what I've seen, no one has said the Leafs have decided to move on.

Well then at the end of the day if you want to report it was all Marner’s decision to leave that’s fine with me. As long as we get to the same result.

Yes, likely a worse team and some overpaid UFAs, but, at least change is fun.

I don't care if he leaves as long as it makes the team better, I just don't think that is going to happen.

Fair point but they are going nowhere with him on the team and it would be even worse with him making 14 million. Change is basically mandatory if we every want to taste the cup

No. The reasons why they wouldn’t be in the finals are the same reasons Marchand wouldn’t considering playing for this team. Remember Marchand is the guy that told Marner to eff off last year, and Marner did what he was told.
We took Florida to game 7, if we had Marchand why couldn't we have beat Florida? He just scored a beauty against EDM to start game 5, what a player!

I also wouldn't be so sure he wouldn't want to play here, has he come out and said that?

Marner making 14 million instead of 11 million ... wouldn't that qualify as change? ;)

We all want the same thing.
Change is scary and the hardest thing to do. Leaving a 10 year regular season comfort zone (but one that has been a constant playoff disappointment) is extremely difficult.
We will have to see what management will do, other guys will need to assume roles 5 on 5 and PP left by Marner.
But maybe the team will have to stop thinking they can just outscore a lack of starting on time and need to work together a different way than they used to. Remove the training wheels.

I still don't think change is good if it is just for change... I enjoy at least watching the playoffs (don't think they will miss now regardless).

They also let the wrong player go, it should have been Nylander.

I also blame all the GMs for assembling stupid rosters, they never tried to address depth scoring and put all the pressure on the top 6.

This might have been the worst year for it, but it's always been a problem.

I haven’t been pleased with Will or Matthews this year and if Willy and Marner had the same contract then I think we could achieve the same results by changing either him or Marner but Marner at 13.5-14 is just not sensible.
Either way the leafs have an uphill battle to make this team successful in the playoffs and running the core 4 back yet again just won’t do it.

They had over $3 million in the press box this year... they waste enough cap other places that they can find the savings between them.

You do understand a player has to agree to stay with the team once he's a free agent?

I'd rather have players who want to play for the team, than players just looking for the next financial angle.

He wanted to play here (by the sounds of it), just wanted to figure it out after the season...

I understand both points of view.

You can blame Mitch for that, which for whatever reason you are reluctant to do.

He could've asked for a trade last offseason, didn't.
He could've accepted the massively stupid contract, didn't.
He could've accepted a trade to a team with a good fit for him, didn't.

Mitch is about Mitch, a massive reason as to why the core failed.
