Player Discussion Mitch Marner Part Infinity

Need evidence that Marner rides the coattails of Matthews?

Marners combined stats with Matthews vs his stats with Tavares from 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024

Marner plays around 1200 mins a year 5v5:
with Matthews 82 games would be 67 points

With Tavares 82 games would be 43 points.

23 points or 54% more 5v5 points!

Short bus mantra is "addition by subtraction".

The reasonable view is the team messed up, big time.
The team didn't mess up Paul, your greedy son turned down 13 to 13.5 mill already which is insane cuz this guy is NOWHERE NEAR McDrai/Makar/Mackinnon.

How delusional does he have to be to even want that level of pressure on himself when he wilts and failed so hard already?

What has Marner done for the Leafs in the playoffs the last 6 years when he was paid $11 million? Now he wants $14 million? Let him get it from another team. What's your main account? Obviously this is a burner account, or some Marner propagandist account.
Account created May 25, 2025. Hmmmm.

Matthews is a big C, has 1 Calder, 3 rockets, 1 Hart, 1 Lindsay, 1 Selke nomination, another Lindsay nomination.

Marner is an overrated tiny winger with no major awards riding the coat tails of an elite generational talent in Matthews.

If Matthews wanted more money, he couldve got it. If he wanted less term, he couldve got it.

Since 2020 Marners p/60 drops from 3.3 to 2.1 without Matthews.

Matthews without Marner stays the same to improves without Marner.

Marner was incredibly overpaid the last 5 years. Cant wait until he is gone. Id be very upset if Matthews left.
Will be interesting to see who he hitches his cart to on his next team. I remember one Nylander arse licker calling Draisaitl a McDavid Leetch. Draisaitl has now fed him his lunch on many occasions. Oh yeah, he also claimed WIlie was better than Draisaitl. Yeah maybe at slacking off and disappearing.

Some of us were screaming... SCREAMING... as far back as the COLUMBUS series that the "half the cap on 4 forwards" unprecedented experiment doesn't work in the playoffs. And that of all the core 4, Marner made the most sense to trade.

SCREAMING!!!!

But unfortunately we were screaming into the void. And mocked. And belittled. Called trolls. Called 'fake' fans.

But we were right. We were always right.
@ACC1224 Was at the front of the line to those name calling.

I wouldn't want to brush aside those kind of real life interactions - which go beyond our hockey chatter, and it's tough to hear that kind of fringe interaction happen to anyone, Marner, Stuart Skinner this week, whenever it happens - but you've also jumped from scapegoating management incompetence to blaming the market, which you characterized as where he wanted to stay, where he said he's treated like "a god" to general toxicity. The best thing here is for Marner to leave and I think we should all be happy that's happening.
I haven't jumped between anything. Marner leaving is still attributable to managerial incompetence, because Marner was still willing to stay here, despite everything that had happened. The discussion shifted because you attempted to misrepresent Marner's character, motivations, loyalty, etc., and then mock the things he has endured over the years - which includes, but is far from limited to, death threats. The best thing for Marner may be to leave, but it's certainly not best for the Leafs, and I'm not happy to see my team get worse.

I wouldn't give marner $14 mil, but saying you'd rather give a 50 point player $10 mil is literally insane.

This is my main and only account. And I'm not really a big marner fan anymore.

But it is crazy to me how the most expensive player in the league and our team captain, just had a far worse season and yet hes getting a free pass while marner is literally taking all the hate.

Just more short bus mentality.

Rumors out of Toronto that Brad is looking for short term deals, for some reason he wants cap flexibility next off season.

No one knows why ....

Or he could have just signed him to a fair contract.

There is no evidence that he received a "great contract offer" mid-season or in the offseason when it actually mattered. If management was competent, they wouldn't have had any issue respecting Marner's choice.
Do you think Marner would sign a "fair contract" - say about $9-10M?

If Marner was competent, he wouldn't have had issue respecting management's choice.

How will we replace Marners annual 2 playoff goal producton! Or his total of 2 5v5 shots in games 2-3-4-5-6?

Yep certainly couldnt use that 14 million elsewhere!

You wont need to worry about the playoffs if you don't replace his 100 points and his elite goal suppression.

Fortunately our GM is not as myopic as "some" people on this board. How many goals did JT, Nylander and Matthews score in the final game this year?

Matthews is signed for 3 more years, and plenty of people have given him fair criticism and called him out. Go look at his player thread. Marner is a few weeks away from leaving, so of course the majority of discussion will be around him. Its not tough to figure out. If Matthews has another mediocre year next year he will start to feel the heat even more.

So shouldn't matthews be getting even more hate since we're stuck with him for 3 more years?

We just named him captain, gave him the most player friendly deal in the nhl and yet he had a far worse season than marner.

Our record without matthews is actually really good.

Our record without marner is trash.

But yeah, let's blame marner for everything.

Whoa whoa whoa. Marner was willing to stay here despite in Toronto despite the toxicity and fringe interactions and threats but the straw that broke the camels back was Treliving’s incompetence in failing to kowtow to him properly to the point that he wouldn’t negotiate in season? I don’t think I’m mocking Marner so much as storytime with Dekes.

I think you'd have trouble signing any player with his stats under 11M

It's what I'd like him to sign for because I think it sets him up best to alleviate pressure, but it's a discount and not "fair"
