Player Discussion Mitch Marner Part Infinity

Good news is I have asked the guy building his legend's row statue to stand down. This POS won't be welcomed back by most Leafs fans for a long time.
But we already had the Marner statue commissioned.

What are we supposed to do with this now?

Leon Draisiatl is about to get paid $14 mil.

View attachment 1050040

He has 4 OT winning goals in this years playoffs alone among the top playoff scorers. In 94 games has 52 goals 88 assists and 140 points : View attachment 1050041

Draisait has Art Ross and Hart and Rocket & Lindsey etc.

Its a complete joke Marner want's $14 mil when compared to the value Edmonton is getting from $8.5 mil now and willing to pay him $14 mil in the future.
It’s absolutely crazy to think Marner with basically zero individual or even team awards to his shoukd be considered the same as Draisaitl

14 million for Marner……oh My God. Is he as good as Draisaitl?
Not even close.
Marner might be the 25th ranked player in the league and some want to give him 14 per year.
Ya it sucks to losing a player for nothing but with his disappearing act in the later stages of the playoff rounds I don’t even want him back period
Not paying 14 million for a 25 goal scoring winger when we pay 11.5 for a 40 goal scoring winger.

Its utter nonsense to believe Draisaitl and Marner are comparables and deserve the same contract.

That is why I believe SO many Leaf fans are SO glad that its going to some other foolish desperate GM that will be paying Marner and then he will be their headache to deal with. Some sense of SANITY will finally return to Toronto.

Our Leafs have been screwed for years overpaying @ $10.9 mil for his disappearing act come playoff time.

Edmonton is getting all this for $8.5 mil :eek2: to boot as that is still the current contract of Draistail and new deal doesn't kick in until this upcoming season. He is 2 wins from a Stanley Cup and perhaps a Conn Smythe playoff MVP before Oilers are on the hook for $14 mil AAV.

Marner and Draisaitl barely play the same sport.

And yeah, look at the loyalty angle too. Draisaitl signs a contract with the Oilers for 8 years, outproduces his contract by a long shot, no drama with McDavid getting top billing, signs another 8 year contract and is mission focused on a Stanley Cup pursuit, while outproducing Little Mitch by a massive margin over their careers.

Pass. I would not pay Marner 14 million. Let someone else do it.
Imagine 8 more years of crapping in the playoffs at a $14 million cap hit...and for the most part in his 30's where he'll be over-the-hill? Some of these folks aren't living in reality or simply denying the reality we've all seen in the last 9 years...how do other teams manage to win the Cup without Marner?

Rantanen literally single handily carried dallas past colorado these past playoffs. Mitch Marner has never carried the leafs to a series win. Can't even recall a playoff game that he single handily dominated.

He also had a terrible series against the Oilers to help them lose, far worse than Marner against Florida.

Rantanen - 5GP | 0G | 3A | 3P | -4
Marner - 7GP | 1G | 4A | 6P | -1

People probably will say Marner wasn't good against Florida too.

Honestly, Rantanen had a handful of extremely good games but was very inconsistent, which hurt his team.

It takes a team 16 games to win the Stanley Cup.

Leon Draisaitl has 4 X OT winning goals himself in this years playoffs which is something the NHL has never seen, and accounted for 1/4 of the game winning goals needed to hoist a Cup.

"Draisaitl's four OT goals this playoffs are the most in a single postseason. John LeClair was the last to score two OT goals in a final for Montreal back in 1993, the last time a Canadian team won the Cup".

For 6 years @ $10.9 mil Marner scored 8 playoff goals combined.

Oiler Nation is so proud of what Draisaitl is doing, while Leafs nation were so embarrassed and disappointed by Marner's disappearing act.

It's crazy to me that the little CBC video about Mitch back in 2009 is basically a summary of his entire Leaf career in the big games where it matters.

I always said it, but when you can remove the Mitch Marner come up story from the Toronto Maple Leafs come up story, we will be better off for it.

That'll be on Legends Row one day... :sarcasm:

Here are Marner's personal achievements during his 6 year X $10.9 mil contract.

He was named as finalist for the Selke once, and played in 4 All-Star games representing Leafs and 4 Nations tournament and named to the NHL All-Star team 2 of the 6 years.

This is a guy who believes he should be the HIGHEST paid player in the game.:dunno:

He might go down in Leafs history as one of the most Overpaid and Overrated Leaf players of all time.

Auston Matthews signed one of his contracts in the summer, and the other in-season. William Nylander techncially signed both contracts in-season at different months of the year. Even Morgan Rielly signed his deal somewhere around Halloween when so much is going on... can you imagine the distractions? It's an obvious point, but if you're committed to a team, loyal to a city and your heart is in a place... those little procedural complications like when to negotiate, if the management team has kowtowed enough, kissed your ring enough (wait you don't have one) don't really matter. Oh but you'll point to the fact that they tried to trade him, egads! So blindsided! Well, it's hockey and the Leafs tried to trade Mats Sundin once or twice for Rob Blake and Eric Lindros so don't act so wounded every time business happens. Finally, all I can say about this whole Mitch Marner experience is the guy takes little offenses and builds it up into massive contract asks and it's so weak.
As funny as it is to see you try to represent a holdout as signing in season, what other players choose to do is irrelevant. Some players are fine signing in-season. Some players aren't. It's up to them. Treliving gave Matthews and Nylander everything they wanted, and they never had to deal with the same kind of disrespect. Heck, trying to trade him would have been better than the stupid games they actually opted for. It's an obvious point, but if you're competent at managing a team, little procedural complications like no in-season signings don't really matter.

Marner has taken every abuse that this team, city, and fanbase could throw at him over the years in stride, and stayed loyal, committed, and philanthropic throughout. Goes out there and does his job, better than most people in the league, and all he asks for is what he's earned.

I remember when Marner fans argued with me about me claiming Marner’s previous contract (10.9) being an over payment. I referenced the Rantanen contract as what should have been the ceiling for Marner. I was told that Marner was a far superior player hence the higher AAV.

Boy was I right.
I remember during the COVID division season, one Marner fanboy argued Marner was a bargain at 10.893.

He wasn't great that series. But career vs career postseason comparison is one of the most lopsided things I can think of

What a saint he has been, enduring those 8 figure July 1 bonus cheques every summer.

I actually feel sorry for you
