Yeah, trying to swap marner for rantanen isnt trying to make the team better. Give me a break. I wonder how many years youll continue to bring up Marner on this board once hes gone.

How long could it take? lol! It’s just a cop out. Look how fast things get done when free agency opens, it shouldn’t be more than a week. Here is my bottom line, then the agent negotiates. Actually there are more variables when buying a house.

You clearly don't understand how contract negotiations work. Marner is allowed to not want that distraction while he's doing his job, and whether or not you agree with that decision is irrelevant. Fact is, Treliving was aware of the situation and was fully capable of working around it. He failed. If you think it's so simple, there's no excuse for Treliving not getting it done last offseason.

I think the frustrating part for me regarding Tre, Shanny and ownership is if they were not confident that they could not get some sort of return back for Marner in the offseason, then you shouldn't be trading 2 first round picks and 2 near NHL ready prospects at the trade deadline when the prices are at a PEAK and teams are overpaying. Those assets could have atleast been used intelligently to take advantage of other team's cap issues and bring in more well rounded players to replace Marner and add more depth to this team.

Instead we have Marner walking for nothing, barely any assets with minimum picks and a bottom of the league prospect pool, along with a relatively weak UFA class to improve our roster.

Absolute idiocy by the individuals managing this organization.

If anything the offseason and free agency present many other variables to consider other than money and term. Do I want to move to that city, play for that coach, play with the guys on that team. Many get it decided in a day but some are easily distracted and need quite a bit of time to digest the ramifications of their decision. I’m pretty sure Tre has no interest in extending Mitch. At this point everyone is awaiting move day. I wonder how long it will take Mitch to decide.

Disagree with this. The targets might not have been right (definitely not in Laughton's case) but you had to go for it. If they lost to Florida in 7 while making no deadline additions we'd be wondering what could've been if they actually tried.

I just don't have any affection left for this guy. He wanted so badly to be a player that we all loved, but his ego made him fight for every dollar and then cry any time he got criticized. That's a lot of baggage, which is honestly kind of pathetic for a grown man, unless you back your shit up. He'd look like the best player in the world every November, but then when May came around he'd disappear. How do you build a hockey team around players who disappear when it matters most?

By all means, Marner is not the only problem in that room, nor the only one who disappears. If it were up to me, I'd send all five of our "big guns" packing and complete the exorcism, but Marner appears to be well and truly on his way out. But Marner is the one who has been constantly crying foul and constantly crying tears that he hasn't been treated like a Golden Boy. $11m and having the clout to make the coach apologize after criticizing you isn't enough of a Golden Child status, Mitch? All those tears because Matthews got more hype?

I don't need my athletes to be paragons of virtue or even be humble, but when the level of egoism is so massive, and so unsupported, it feels sniveling. I don't want to cheer for that any more, it's just kind of gross tbh.

Although we knew it was a mistake to be trading those picks thinking they could get to the eastern final , I’ll give Berube, and to some extent, Treliving a pass for not believing that nhl players could be so easily pushed out of a playoff series. What they witnessed firsthand had to be eye opening.

My take is its as simple as; our bottom six has never been any good because we don't have money for depth. The core has always been good not great. And that is unfortunately not near a championship level. You do need the bottom six to do something when the top 6 neutralizes each other. Florida's 3rd line is clearly good, Tampa before that, Kessel was almost a Conn Smythe guy, etc.

Dubas really botched this era. But there is something to say that we STILL got heroics THIS YEAR from our "bad depth". Overtime goals from Benoit and Domi, Woll playing way above a league minimum salary.

Florida is the benchmark, an amazing team, great top 9, great D and goaltending, plays cohesive, and we had the top 4 highest paid players with both teams combined and none of which were Stand outs after 7 games. That is not right and we need to be strong enough to make changes. Yeah some of them will be misses, but if you're afraid of mistakes this isn't the job for you. Don't we have the highest staff payroll in the entire NHL? Surely our managers are smart enough to figure it out and if they're not, we don't have a shot anyway. All I know is the sample size is huge, and no other team would tolerate this much failure

In the grand perspective, we were already in a place where winning the cup wasn't a realistic possibility.

The sooner we can get into another rebuild the better, what a giant waste this era was.

Instead of paying Marner $14 mil it's going to be fascinating to see how the team will re-invest that in new replacement players.

If done correctly this could spread the wealth among numerous players and build a stronger deeper team.

This is an exciting time for Leafs Nation fans to finally see the end of the failed core 4, and the beginning of something new. This is way overdue as Marner should have been dispatched years ago when he went goalless against Columbus and Montreal series, resulting in embarrassing Leafs losses.

Rantanen literally single handily carried dallas past colorado these past playoffs. Mitch Marner has never carried the leafs to a series win. Can't even recall a playoff game that he single handily dominated.
