Player Discussion Mitch Marner Part Infinity

For real?
First I've heard of this.
Lou had to step in before his first training camp because Mitchy and his dad had a website up a few weeks after the draft selling Marner 93 merch on there. Lou told them to nix the website and they wouldn't be allowed to have a high jersey number. They act like they lived in the Congo with how desperate they were for any $$.

I don't think this greediness crept into his persona over his tenure here...not at all....it was from the start it seems.

Before he even entered the building?

That's some crap that I'm not buying - everyone loved this kid the first few years here. Super skilled, unselfish, played in all situations, local kid, full of energy and enthusiasm and life, and such a breath of fresh air compared to the crap we were used to at the time.

I don't buy that you, and others here, had pegged him as a problem before he even started. Sentiment really started to turn in the final year of his ELC, when the Dregers of the hockey world started negotiating on his behalf, clearly trying to use Leafs fans as leverage against the organization after going through the entire William Nylander saga.

Looking back on the whole 10 years I’d say I wasn’t ever a passionate Marner fan. He was kind of a middle child between Nylander and Matthews and kinda over looked him when he was down with JVR and Bozak. His hunched over skating and underpowered game wasn’t really my favorite thing to watch. And the 2019 contract situation became a real turnoff. I guess whatever.

Honestly this is just the Mitch Marner experiment epitomized. I will miss his talent and skill, but I will never miss the constant circus this guy brings.

Plain and simple, if Mitch wanted to continue being a Maple Leaf, we would not even be having this conversation right now.

If the report from 2 Mutts Podcast is in fact true, then Mitch Marner is very clearly full of shit, and 100% the person a large amount of this fanbase always thought he was. Ultimately, we do not need players in our organization who make things harder than they need to be. Certainly not from guys who wear letters and are allegedly leaders.

I have no problem with Mitch exercising his NMC and leaving in free agency. It is absolutely his right to do so. But I do have issue with him suggesting the idea of him being asked to waive his NMC being offending. Like do you actually think we as a fanbase are stupid enough to believe that shit? You were offered a very lucrative extension last summer, you declined. Refused to negotiate all season. You were then approached with a temperature check at the deadline and a possible solution that would have worked for both club and player and that was now the straw that broke your back??? C'mon man, quit playing the victim. Just call it as it is. I want a change of scenery. I didn't choose to exercise my NMC because I wanted to have 1 last crack at something special with this group and my wife and I were expecting...etc

quit this victim bullshit. Nobody is buying it

Charlie McAvoy in 2024 playoffs where Marner is 2 strides from the puck in the corner and bails on it because McAvoy is coming.
2024 playoffs, Game 7 vs. Boston, OT... Marner comes off the bench and onto the ice, avoids contact by moving out of Pastrnak's lane. Pastrnak breaks through, set play by Boston... season over.

That was my turning point on Marner, it took me a few years, but hey... bye, Felicia.

I would also worry that he and Tanev on the same team would be ticking time bombs - just waiting for their bodies to give way on them.
I think we can get a few "Ron Hainsey" type years out of Tanev. What a player, though! He set a team record in shot blocking, led the team in +/- as a shutdown defenceman, all while facing the best competition. I thought he was our most consistent player all year, and I'm happy we have him for the rest of his career.

This core is so miserable to watch I'm starting to feel nostalgic for Kessel, Bozak and JVR.

MLSE needs to make this right with a Schedule B ceremony night. Hand him a big novelty contract that can right these historic wrongs. Lest we turn this twerp into the next Dave Keon.

Actually curious how many of the Schedule B bonuses Marner actually hit and how missing them condemned him to a life of poverty. Just the human cost.
I think it's irrelevant how many he would've got. When they signed his ELC he was told the team doesn't give Schedule B bonuses, and then the next year they abandon that and give them out. I think 100% of people in that situation would take it personally and it's irrelevant how much money it actually cost him.

15.5 was reportedly his agent's counter offer after rejecting 13.5.
Just goes to show you how cheap and hateful the Leafs are.

Mitch is willing to live in borderline poverty making only 15.5 million per year while us fat cats dine on caviar and hurl 100 jerseys on the ice at him from our $50,000 seats.

This just tells me you don’t actually watch hockey games.
You just have it on TV when you drink your beers

The crux of the historical grievance is the Leafs don’t value him quite the same as Auston Matthews. Sorry kid, grow up.

But you’re not paying him
Nonsense. Every single dollar for any professional sport comes from the fans. Whether that dollar comes from direct game attendance, merch sales, advertising revenues from TV and radio providers or direct payments to cable companies, streaming companies et al EVERY SINGLE SPORT is fan funded 100%.

Does he need to? I bet he gets Matthews money this summer

The compromise is he needs to leave his hometown to get every last penny, but I'm just hoping after July 1, this is not our problem.

On the maturity piece, I think this guy could have had a much happier time in Toronto not comparing himself to Matthews on every privilege. It's hard to imagine a guy like Draisaitl huffing and puffing like Mitch every time Connor McDavid was elevated a little higher.
