Player Discussion Mitch Marner Part Infinity

He didn't get pushback - he had a free remit to try and win now in that core's final few cracks at it, and is now rebuilding. This always felt like the plan in Pittsburgh.

Agreed that Marner to a team entering a retool/rebuild doesn't seem likely, but beyond that, I just can't imagine Dubas being particularly interested in that reunion given how integral Marner was to Dubas' failing in Toronto.
I dont think Crosby was willing to go through a rebuild and he didnt want to be moved. When they were out of the playoff picture, Dubas quickly switched to sell mode and sold Guentzal. Crosby wasnt just reportedly pissed...he was visibly pissed and made out of character comments to the media voicing his anger with the move.

Nylander has given up on many puck battles because someone was going to hit him, Marner is not even close to that level.

They both primarily use their stick and avoid contact because other parts of their game are better, which is fine, wouldn't critique either for this, but Nylander bailing on pucks in the corner to not get hit is exclusive to him.
@Antropovsky I think “@notbias” needs a reminder that he is in fact being bias and making zero sense

Charlie McAvoy in 2024 playoffs where Marner is 2 strides from the puck in the corner and bails on it because McAvoy is coming.

Regular season point muncher. Playoff choke artist but Matthews is even worse. I only like one player on this team and that is JT. 100% every shift. Sick of the Matthews "im injured" bullshit every year. EVERY YEAR!! Nylander is more soft than Marner if thats possible. No 1st round picks for 4 years, 1 prospect. Can only trade 3rd or 4th liners and they are a dime a dozen.

Are you done yet? Now now. Let's be realistic again.

Marner can only sign a 7 year deal max as a UFA.
If he wants to sign for 8 years, the Leafs would need to trade his rights to that team before July 1st.
Incorrect - only the Leafs can sign Marner to an 8 year deal.

Even if you trade his rights, the team acquiring Marner's rights can only do a max 7 year deal .

And at the rate Marner is losing speed and getting a name about himself playing high and poor performances in the POs he should now fight tooth and nail to get a sign and trade for 8 years done. That things an anchor. 4 years a blessing to whatever team wants him.

Marner has all the leverage - he won't need to fight "tooth and nail" for anything.

We have this sign & trade conversation every summer about notable UFAs, and they never actually end up happening, because the acquiring team has no interest in giving up assets for an 8th year which is often a player's 35+ year.

Imagine Marner saying something like this. He’s always chased the money when it came to Toronto.

He would never lol. It still half shocks me that not a single one of them said to the media "we just werent good enough when it mattered. We need to be better. We are going to work hard all summer to get stronger and faster to make sure it doesnt happen again."

Looking at McDavid last year when Edmonton lost in the finals he was just gutted. He is not going to let it happen again this year. Matthews, Marner, Nylander, Tavares, Rielly have assumed any responsibility for the team over their tenure here. Matthews complaining about passengers and Marner screaming for people wake the f*** up. It isnt Holmberg or Lorentz fault. Even Domi and Benoit came up clutch more than the bros.

Skill gets you into the playoffs but Heart wins Championships. It feels like the whole world is aligned in thinking that they show zero heart.

I know it will never happen and not having our first for next 2 seasons doesnt help but I am pretty convinced that we cannot win with any of them here. It may sound impulsive but I would look to trade Matthews, Nylander, and Rielly as well. Sure they all have NMC but I think if Brad told them he is trading them, let me know a few teams.

I would rather retool now with a likeable hardworking team than have another 4 years of nonsense until Matthews walks as a ufa.

That's fair.

But at the end of the day, the goal is to make the Penguins good again, not make Crosby happy.

If this all paving the way to flip Crosby for a return that jumpstarts the rebuild? That's the right approach.

The bolded is not in their DNA.

Love to sign Ekblad but I fear he has too many hard miles on him. Like he says, "I've given my body and everything to this team". He can't have enough left to give after these SCFs.

I would also worry that he and Tanev on the same team would be ticking time bombs - just waiting for their bodies to give way on them.

He is not even the greatest Leaf on the this team.

This guy can’t make an aggressive business maneuver without having to point out some external disrespect factor first.

I really wish these kind of reports would stop talking about how he loves the city, the fans, teammates and the organization. No you don’t. You’re a mercenary and the worst part is having to make excuses to justify it.

That almost reads like a quote from his representation.....

He has hurt feelings... so sad.

Noting the quote is... He should go down as the Greatest Leaf born in Toronto. It's kind of a weird statement, but also true.

It's our responsibility as fans and as an organisation community to make sure that all of our precious players and fans feel welcomed and appreciated. If Mitch thought we were being mean, we must have been. If Mitch feels we were low balling him at 13.5m, it is likely true. Why would he and Ferris lie? They love Toronto and would work here for free thats truth. The only thing is it's out of principle that it should have been 15.5m

Management should issue a press release that they will explore other options because they are offended that Marner did not provide any value in 10 playoffs despite the vast sums of money they have provided him with.

I am sure there will be good endorsement deals for Marner in Columbus.
