Player Discussion Mitch Marner Part Infinity

Problem a Clueless Dubas gave away Leafs #13 overall to dump Marleau to re-sign RFA Kapanen and A. Johnsson and they both sucked and were dumped a year later.

A 23 year old Seth Jarvis has already scored more playoff goals 19, than Mitch Marner has his entire career. (13 total). I'd rather have Seth Jarvis than Mitch Marner today.

...we dropped 2 spots for a year of AJ + Kap. It's honestly pretty strong asset management, but Jarvis was a solid pick and likely a top 3 player in a redraft.

....and our prospect died, which doesn't exactly help in evaluating the moves

Treliving tried to trade him to Vegas before the season and to Carolina during the season so perhaps the writing about re-signing was already known.

Maybe changing the DNA is just saving face?
Walking away from Marner allowing a 100 point player to exit for free, because you would prefer the recaptured cap space, certainly would speak volume's and leave no doubt whom the DNA quote was referencing.

After unsuccessfully, attempting to get rid of Marner multiple times, Treliving seems to be suggesting he would rather walk into the complete unknown and certainty of Free Agency to replace him to change the dynamics of the team, or DNA (Dynamics Need Addressing) as he calls it.

Whatcha gonna do when a player doesn't seem to be taking the hint?

I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if he took a smaller pay cut just so that he could be a bus-rider on a stacked team a la Kevin Durant. He knows that he doesn't have what it takes to be THE guy on a contender.

Kyle Dubas already set this man up with generational wealth before he had proven anything of substantial value, so he can clearly afford to lose out on a couple of millions if it means that he ends up on a contender.

The problem is the pay cut is on a rumoured $13.5 from the Leafs. Not on his current $11 million contract. Any team that gives him more than Rantanen will regret it and not win over the term of his contract imo.

If he signs with Vegas they will have to lose players both in the short and long term to deal with Marner aftermath.

If he goes somewhere like Chicago, they will end up having to over pay Bedard and it will cost them the ability for depth.

I cannot see Carolina knocking their internal cap out of wake or Florida giving him more than their best players.

We can go down the list of NHL teams. My money is a team like Columbus who has money to burn and no one really who will get bent out of shape in the short term if they have him $14 million.

There is still an option here that guarantees 100% certainty of success.

If you try to trade him to Vegas and they say "NO", and you try to trade him to Carolina and he says "NO".

Then I wonder if GM Treliving has approached Marner and his agent Ferris, about the idea of a Sign-&-Trade to any one of the other 31 teams of Marner's choice where he would like to continue his career next?

Then nobody will be saying "NO" and problem solved.:teach2:

Does he have to waive in order to trade his rights ? Seem like a pending UFA should not have a say since he is a UFA in 4 weeks.

I have that feeling as well, with the caveat that Rogers may want to run it back being as unimaginative as they are…

I could also see an alternative solution where we get Marner back (not that I want it) and sign Bennett (notice how it was clarified he was looking at $7.5 million and not $10 million) but Tavares gets pushed out the door.
I would love for Brad to replace Tavares with Bennett and Marner with Ehlers and Granlund.

Imo we are a better team with Ehlers, Bennett and Granlund. Would also love to trade Rielly and use that money to sign Provorov. Would be a miracle but if we could recoop a first in a Rielly deal would be some tidy business.

I feel like Marner doesn’t have the total conviction to leave Toronto. He’s alluding to leaving by going to July 1, seeing what’s out there etc. but its carefully crafted language, not closing the door. He’a not making a definitive statement he’s 100% leaving, and he could if he was just so over the experience.

Yep. He's going to wait and see what the offers are before deciding, which is smart and he's earned that right. But I also think the Leafs have some leverage here because he probably doesn't want to move away from his family with a young baby right now. Who knows, we'll see.

Personally, I'd sign Marner and Bennett, see about moving Matthews and set the team up so that it screams "CONNER, COME HOME! We'll even let you play with the same guys you did at the 4 Nations tournament if you want!"

Have to get a second line center that isn't Domi, but I think it's a much better plan for success than praying Matthews suddenly gets healthy (despite claiming there's nothing wrong enough to need surgery or anything) and Nylander can handle having the best defensive guys in the league lining up against him.

If it goes to July 1st., how much Cap Space will the Leafs have on July 2nd.?

Yes, however the way around this obstacle is the allow teams to approach him in advance with the Leafs giving permission in advance of July 1st.

Any successful conversation could return a small return for that right (ie draft pick) ,however the one that successfully ends in a Sign and Trade where Leafs can give Marner's new team an 8th contract year instead of just 7 as a UFA, would also permit the exchange of other assets to complete.

Treliving successfully orchestrated a Sign and Trade in the past with Matthew Tkachuk (RFA), when he was still with Calgary, and it returned assets such as Huberdeau and Mackenzie Weagar etc, Any team that was willing and wanting to sign Marner to 8 years at their rate $$, approved by Marner and also would need to create a lot of cap space in the process to absorb the new deal.

It has been suggested after the playoffs are over that Florida Panthers sign pending UFA Sam Bennett to example : 8 X $8mil deal (Leafs terms) and then deal him to Toronto for a resigned Marner on their terms of 8 X $12 mil. Both teams getting a player locked up long-term for what would have been a pending UFA and each player receives an 8th year on their deal instead of 7 at agreed amount. Everyone is happy.!!!
