Player Discussion Mitch Marner Part Infinity

Once you’re in the playoffs that true but you still need to get there first. Not replacing any of Marners offense could jeopardize their odds of even making the playoffs. So it would have to be Bennet plus others.
The idea that using the 13M and not getting anything at all for it is pretty silly. I wouldn't even accuse Dubas of being that bad.

Incorrect.
"This thread seems like imagining scenarios that people didn't actually come up with it. Majority of the people want to change it up, so not sure where OP is seeing run it back."

This is your quote.

I'm not imagining it. People on this very thread are talking about welcoming back Marner.

Marner produces more points which means more goals scored for the leafs. This might come as a surprise to you but more goals scored is a good thing.

Matthews is, at least apparently, always injured come playoffs and most regular seasons.

Matthews has one of the worst contracts in the nhl.

Marner produces more points which means more goals scored for the leafs. How many players have had their career year playing with marner? How many have had their career year playing with matthews?

Matthews is, at least apparently, always injured come playpff time and for most of the regular season too.

Matthews had one of the worst contracts in the nhl. He's the highest paid player and in 3 years, he'll want to be the highest paid player again. He's the most selfish star player in the league and it isn't close.
Yet, Marner can't produce the kind of points that Kucherov or Draisaitl produces, so why is he asking for the moon? He's a 25 goal scorer on average, and this year was the first time he hit 100 pts in 9 years...and he's a playoff dud...if he had a better shot, perhaps he would have no problem hitting 120 points, but he doesn't, and keeps failing in the playoffs because he's small, and plays small.

Absolutely not, Florida will likely offer him something around 7x6, and he would be stupid not to take it. The only way we have a chance of signing him is if we offer him something really stupid like 10x8.

Bennett is not going to be a Leaf.
Only chance I see he signs here is if he wants to play at home like Tavares did.

This guy plays 6'2" in the playoffs compared to the super, elite, never won a Selke, Marner.

Not fast
Not physical
Not an elite goal scorer
Poor shot
Will not go into corners
Plays high
Lots of high risk passes
Appears to be slowing down
Edge work not as good as 4 years ago
Never been a PO clutch performer
Poor attitude
Difficult in negotiations (overpays)
Seems to demand to be on Matthews line

Vs

Great edge work
Great vision and playmaking
Good defensively
Consistently puts up 90pts in the reg season

What does it mean?

The Damien Cox article in today's Star is good for a laugh.

He says Shanahan leaving "hasn't been explained logically".

He says Marner had two seasons left on his contract when Tre was hired, so it's fair to blame Tre for the ramifications, without seeing that he really had maybe a month before the NMC.

He says the situation of "a team that can't score in the postseason when it matters" means it needs to bring back one of the worst players at scoring in the postseason when it matters.

He seems to think that Matthews and Nylander signing extensions before or during the season, and Marner refusing to do so, is an indication that the team is treating him differently.
I am shocked someone is still paying Damien Cox to write about anything

Yea this year the "pressure in Toronto" narrative is getting sqashed and even laughed over.

I like that Vaive, Patches and Roberts have come out and said they love the pressure in Toronto. Makes Marner playing the victim card constantly look very bad. And Vaive of course also saying he thinks Marner needs to go and cant hack Toronto..that hes soft and plays like a figure skater trying to avoid hits. Lol... ouch from a Leaf legend.

I wonder what Marner thought hearing Patches say that when you go to places with less fans you notice it and places with fans like Montreal and Toronto are much better (in his opinion).
Marner is the new scapegoat just like Larry Murphy. Both were bad fits on the team and had poor relationships with the fan base. However they both contributed offense that will have to be replaced.

I don't recall Murphy having a poor relationship with the fans. The fans hated him because he was too slow and made too much money. Marner on the other hand is unliked by some of the fanbase because he and his agent are weasels, was overpaid, has sucked in the playoffs and has the balls to think he is worth Draisaitl money.

Murphy hated the fans and the media and couldn’t handle any criticism. He was a slow player but dominated on the PP. The problem was the leafs couldn’t shelter him at even strength whereas Pittsburgh and Detroit had plenty of depth.

Leaf management is up against it. Don't sign Marner, you lose 100 points and there is a real possibility of missing the playoffs. Sign him and incur the wrath of Leaf Nation and face an early playoff exit. The Leafs will struggle over the next 5 years at least with the hand that Dubas dealt them. So, whaddya do? Do you fold or play with the cards you've been dealt? It's a tough decision.

Nah, not likely we miss the playoffs.

They arent losing 100 points. They’ll replace him with 2 solid players and they’ll make up the offence. Probably both 60 point players themselves, they’ll also spread around the offense more for our other players. Matthews won’t have that bad a season again. Knies is taking a step forward. Overall I doubt we lose much offense, if any, at all in the regular season and we’ll be much better in the post season.

If anything, the more difficult thing to replace is his defence. Him and Matthews are good defensive players and can shut down any line really. That will be difficult to replace but overall still worth it since matthews does most of the heavy lifting defensively anyway.

We lose Marner, we won’t score 100 goals less next year, I guarantee that.
SAN Jose scored 84 goals less than Tamp, 57 less than us. We won’t be worse off offensively than the sharks even if we add nobody.

Yep... that is a team similar to Fla makeup. F%*& Dubas, Shanahan and Marner.
I can see the headlines now after game 2

Kadri responds to Bennett, out remainder of playoffs. Hyman injured in awkward fall, questionable for remainder of series

Suggest 2 solid 60 point players and their cap hit.

Better that than players like this:

Rick Vaive "I watched Marner vs Florida. He looked nervous during the anthem. He goes into corners like a figure skater, trying to avoid being hit"

Hard to get hurt or suspended if your game is playing on the perimeter "trying to find sticks down low".

Goes into the corners like a figure skater is about as bad as it gets from a hockey guy. I mean what could be worse on video?

Bennett and Ehlers for for 8.5 each. Move out Jarnkrok since we need to make a roster spot anyway, and with Marners 14M ask, them two pretty much cancel each other out.

Not what I’d do personally, but it’s easy to enough to replace the guy for the regular season and be better in the post season.

Palmieri just got $4.75m for 48 points. I like Vilardi (25) and Ehlers (29) who both had 60+ points this season. Bennett will cost too much. Boeser and Nelson may be available if they do not sign with the Wild.

Kakko (24 years old) could be a high reward player. 30 poiints in 49 games with the Kraken. Too bad he is an RFA and not a UFA.

Local boy Ryan McLeod (25) might be a sleeper. 20 goals and 33 assists last year.

Some like Donato (29) who had 60+ with the Hawks this year. 31 goals which Mitch will probably never hit again.

McMann Tavares Bastian
Lorenz Laughton B Tanev

Not bad depth.

You do neither. There are more successful teams without Marner. There always was.

Treliving has to lean on his pro scouts. Life will continue without MM and JT.

The key is to not be in cap hell and have few draft picks. One or the other, but not both.
