Player Discussion Mitch Marner Part Infinity

If they pay him more than Matthews he would probably stay but it will require an overpayment.
Not interested. Nobody should make more than Matthews on this team so let someone else pay him 13/14 million. Even with that being said, this core has passed its best before date and needs a major change.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

I have CLOSED THAT DOOR in Toronto for Marner. Treliving PLEASE DO NOT F UP
There is no single player who can replace Marner and Matthews is probably begging the team to keep him. However as I stated earlier if they can replace Marner with multiple players who are more reliable than they go in that direction.

I think two 50-60 point wingers would do better than one 100 point wingers. Allow us to spread things around that much more.

Not looking for a single player to replace Marner. We are looking for 3/4 guys who bring something completely different. Getting players who can all contribute 20 goals in the regular season and provide scoring in the playoffs while playing a solid 2 way game. It might not be name guys, nobody cared about Verhaeghe, Rodrigues, Forsling until they slotted in and became valuable contributing parts to the whole.
Florida began their DNA change a few years ago with nobody noticing.

Then f*** Matthews because his underachieving greedy ass shouldn't have a role in personnel decisions. He's not McDavid or MacKinnon no matter what he thinks he is and it's unlikely he's re-signed himself in a few years.

Matthews is under long term contract and is team captain. They will absolutely consider his input whether anyone likes it or not.

I don’t think your math adds up
Yes it does. Marners 102 points is about 65 points above a baseline average NHL player scoring 35 points in a season. A 50 point player scores 15 points above baseline. You need at least 3 of those to get close to replacing Marners offense.

The Panthers have managed to achieve this with excellent scoring depth and with the leafs having an abundance of cap space it’s entirely doable.

I’m pretty sure 3 times 50 is 150 and Marner was just over 100.
All this stuff about points over baseline average is just window dressing.
I deal in actual points earned

That’s not how statistics work in professional sports. Would be nice if it were that easy.

The best way to simplify things are to use point shares. Marner has an offensive point share of 8.1 and a defensive point share of 2.5. Therefore you need to find players who can replace his offensive point share of 8.1 at a minimum. The problem is that players who score below baseline levels can actually have a negative point share especially if they are defensive liabilities. So adding 4 players who score 25 points might achieve nothing.

A good example is Nick Ehlers and Sam Bennett. Ehlers has an offensive point share of 5.6 and Bennett is 3.9. So by adding these guys you are effectively replacing his offence and both players are pluses on defense. If replacing Tavares you will need to add two additional players to replace his offence especially on the PP. Can you sign all 4 guys for less than Marner and Tavares? Probably not to be honest but with some extra cap space it’s doable and the added depth will help in the playoffs.

You could probably replace Marner and Kampfs 115 points next year with two players and a collective 16M but thats overly academic anyway, doesnt work like that.

To put it in perspective, Panthers wouldn't have swapped out Bennetts 51 points for Marners 102 points this year. They would have had worse odds at winning the cup.

No they wouldn’t. Marner is a better offensive player than Bennett. However Bennett is much cheaper and allows the Panthers to add elsewhere in the lineup thus improving their depth scoring. Plus Bennett brings intangibles that are difficult to quantify that helps you win games. Especially in the playoffs.

The Panthers will likely be bidders for Marners services. He can be sheltered in their lineup without nearly as much media scrutiny.

Why do you need to replace it 1 for 1? We could shave off some goals and still be comfortably in the playoffs. Nylander or whoever takes over his PP QB role is also going to get a bigger point share. Replacing his one shot on net in the last few games against Florida shouldn’t be too hard.

Marner also creates on offense. The passes to nowhere or shots into the goalies chest will start getting old real fast if you don’t replace the entirety of his offense.

No idea what about the Cats or Maurice makes you think they would bring Marner into their program, that would be crazy. They turfed 115p Hubes and never had it so good.

It's likely if the players were swapped it would be the Leafs walking into the finals.
