Player Discussion Mitch Marner Part Infinity

Despite everything that’s being said, I still think there’s a decent chance he’s back. Maybe 75% goes and 25% back.

The team probably prefers to not have him back but they really shot themselves in the foot with those trades this year. It’s very difficult to build through FA and they have no trade capital so that may force their hand to make him another offer so they don’t lose value completely.

Then it will be up to him to decide to come back, which is also unlikely but who knows. I’m sure his world was shattered when he found out fans want him gone rather than think of him as a god, but arrogant guys like that have short memories and could totally see him wanting to run it back too after a few weeks.

I feel like the breakup may be overstated as well.

Don't see it. Tre tried to trade him twice and Dubas tried once. Marner is the type to take that personally and hold a grudge.

I don't see any love there, not for the fans or the organization.

He is 100% gone.

No way
I would not leave Toronto
No chance i am living in Carolina or Utah
Mitch is back

Which of those three players is going to do/say "something spicy"?
I could see Nylander just dismissing losing Marner. "Doesn't matter, he's not here now. We have to find success within this lockerroom" and it causing issues via the media.

I could see Matthews saying something when the team struggles. Not so much about Nylander, but something like "we sure could use Marner right now" type of soundbyte.

They need to get different. Marner got pushed out of the playoffs once again, there’s no need to run it back again.
the Leafs need to get better not just different ! how to get better is the question and i doubt many if anyone is saying to run it back again

The best way i see to get ''different'' and better is to let JT walk and use his money to improve the depth , he's been by far the weakest link and has had only one good playoff series not playoffs his entire career and none with us but for some reason he's getting a free pass yet again by the majority of fans , I think part of the reason for this is many feel he's destined to get re-signed so they just ignore how pitiful he's been .

Pretty selective memory if you think one playoff series is what’s driving this decision.

He’s been shit and outside of a few obsessed fans on here, everyone’s realized this guy needs to go. Everyone from analysts to leaf legends are calling this guy out.
he hasn't been the worst of the core 4 so why is he getting singled out ?

Who gives a toss about ppg?! Dude is a coward and a weiner. I wouldn't want him on my roller hockey team, this dude is house league all the way. Is everyone able to recognize the rich bitch-type kids at the rink all the time who thinks they are great because they have "hands"? But they have zero team game and don't play in tournaments and shit. That is this guy. HF
teams need a mixture of players , did the Hawks trade Kane because he was small and weak and didn't bang in the corners ? of course not , what they did was build a gritty team which maximized his skill set

Yeah, we sure could have used Marner the last 9 years in the playoffs.

For one thing he doesn’t have a contract so he’s the logical change they need to make to their core group. And he has the worst numbers of the group in the most important playoff games. Eventually it becomes obvious it isn’t going to work paying him $13M.

Again. They already have.
You think they will cut negotiations?
Pelley just said that Berube will
Have more input.

He said that he 100% wants Marner back.

Do you have any evidence at all that they aren’t going to offer a contract?
They already have. $13.5M x 8 years and he turned them down. He’s leaving.

in about a month or so, we will know what’s going to happen.

The thing is that if MM is gone. Some here will think it is some sort of victory and some will think it is some sort of defeat….

If MM resigns, some here will act like the Leafs won the Cup and some will be piss….

The truth is that it doesn’t matter if MM resigns or not or who else Leafs is going to sign, trade… the only thing that matters is can this team win the Cup. And at this moment with 7 yrs of playoffs data, bringing the Core 5 back pretty much means not winning the Cup bc none of them had shown anything in the playoffs that they CAN do it. When the going gets tough, they all disappeared and shy away from taking the lead.

Even if all five are on great contracts for another 4-5yrs. They still need to trade 3-4 of them bc they had 7 yrs of data showing they can’t do it.
This.

JT doesn't have a contract and he's been by far and away the worst of the core group , is much older and was just significantly outplayed by Patches who makes a fraction of what JT is paid .

but i guess we're obligated for some reason to bring him back and spin whatever overpayment he gets as a discount !

He's a Muskoka Dad. The Leafs love collecting Muskoka Dads

He’s only 2 years younger than Patches. So there’s a good chance any 3 year plus deal will result in us paying a Patches level forward whatever seems “acceptable” today. I wouldn’t bet that we have the 2025 version of Tavares next year.

It dawned on me just now. I think I have the answer to our problems and it is to address the issue that's plagued the Leafs for decades. Overpaying old guys.

Top 6 players should be under 32 and can skate quick.

Bottom six players should be cheap and it doesnt matter the age so much compared to the fact they should be able to move up the lineup and make under 3m

I kinda agree. If we just spent the money like drunken sailors on 3 guys combining to make $22 million or whatever we would be 1 body deeper and 3 fresh voices in that room. If you could purge Morgan Rielly too you could have nearly $30 million in a new roster and up to 4 upper middle class players to change the culture.
Yup. It’s the quickest way to turn this culture of playoff failure around.

I think Berube hockey means you just need big programmable forwards who can skate and just play a crash and bang Western Conference game. But are smart and toolsy enough to just execute the system and chip in offensively when the play unfolds. Youth would definitely be a factor.

Former NHL player "you give letters to really good players, Ottawa did it with Yashin, they are really good players but not Leaders..they arent leaders"

100%

Yashin was also known to not want to play playoff hockey.

I don't think anyone can be certain which way this will go so question for those who think it could go either way - what are the odds he's a Leaf when the season starts?

I ask because I made a bet on it today with a friend. Not a lot of money, just a fun bet and I'm curious as to what people think.
Personally, I think he’s gone. I don’t think he’s going to want to deal with the public scrutiny anymore. Although, with Berube gushing over him publicly yesterday combined with the fact that Pelley said he’s going to have more influence on roster construction, you never know.

pretty much and if Tavares gets any worse than he has been in the playoffs he'll need to be a healthy scratch
