To get the 8th year. Players don’t care about costing team draft picks/assets Thats a fan mentality.

Most places Marner would want to go don’t have 13 million in space. They will have to make room anyway

if he wants to go to Vegas (tsn Darren Dreger is really close to the Marner camp and has always acted as his mouthpiece actually said this on Toronto radio. Marner would consider signing and trading)

They need to get rid of salary. It may be simpler to trade salary to Toronto for useful not star players (karlson/hague/roy types).

Again Darren Dreger said they may want to do that. And he is clearly in the Marner camp. He was the one who was doing the Marner public negotiations last time.

“Columbus tried to get him to sign a sheet”

what about game 1 against the Sens? or Game 6 against the panthers? those dont count?

I feel like people have completely lost the plot and are now just making things up in their heads for arguments sake.

teams get crushed in playoff games pretty often and go on deep runs or even win cups. this isnt to say we're close or not it's just a reminder that this weird metric that some people here have come up with is like reading brain poison
 
1 more months of debating and then we should all just let go. No posting "ha ha look how good marner is" every time he gets over 2 points. We should all move on. It's management's fault we didn't trade him for a nice package. A 1st + a B prospect would've been preferable to zero

You would get more for Willy, but you'd be left with the lesser player at the higher price.

Literally the price we paid for Laughton would've been a big improvement

I'm not sure that addresses either question.

You think a player would willingly go to a weaker team for the sake of a guaranteed 8th year? I suppose players who are only interested in money and not winning.

JT didn't, but I can see Mitch doing it.

Management is trading him July 1 for UFA 1 + UFA 2 + UFA 3

Would you trade Marner + Jarnkrok + Kampf for Bennett + Ehlers/Boeser + Mangiapane + B Tanev

Define weaker team?
In my mind a weaker team would be a Chicago/anaheim/sanjose/detroit/utah.

Those are teams that have cap space to add him for nothing.

Perennial non playoff teams or bubble that are selling hope. Mitch has lived first hand what that leads to.

Did tkachuk care about going to a “weaker team” when he got traded to Florida? Why not sign the one year in Calgary, and go to Florida with weegar/huberdeau and a first?

I think. My guess is he goes to a team that is competitive. Most competitive teams will need to drop salary to afford his 12-14 million dollar tag. So they have to drop salary.

There are some exceptions of course. La/carolina.

If he wants the 8th year. Which Dreger himself speculated. Then he has to sign and trade. It’s his only option.

Would you give up a gauranteed 13ish million. Dollar contract so your team didn’t give up prospects/picks? Makes no sense.

Who knows what he does. I honestly think he re-signs at the end of the day.
Signing bonuses/endorsements/ the chance to be the maple leafs all time scorer.

I think he comes back. But no guarantees. If not we have heard Vegas is where he wants to go.

There is zero way he goes to Vegas without them having to remove from their roster

No. Don’t overpay for UFA.
If they can move Kampf, Domi or Jarnkrok, you do it, but they need bodies so they may let Jarnkrok’s contract expire.

I think the dressing room of the Leafs has concluded he is leaving. They want him out. Berube wants him out.
This is not his choice if he demands more than 11m....

He failed to earn an offer from the Leafs.

I’d save the money. You never know what could happen. Who knew Rantanen would become available last season. And I know it’s a pipe dream but McDavid and Eichel are UFA in 26. Let Marner walk and keep some cash free.

Last week he failed to earn a contract offer. The Leafs are lucky he didn’t want to sign during the season.

Again. This isn’t true. The leafs are going to and have been trying to negotiate with him.

You may not want them to do it. You may hope he doesn’t take it.

But Toronto is still trying to negotiate with him by every piece of info we have

I highly doubt they will.
 
poor Mitch needs a better pr team . lol

he was 2nd best out of the expensive core 4 ahead of Mathews and Tavares but hey lets all pile on and drive him out of town !

and then overpay lesser ufa's as well as bringing Tavares the mumbling ghost back on an overpayment while we spin it as a another discount !
