Player Discussion Mitch Marner Part Infinity

We all knew it was only a matter of time. Every time they pumped their chests after Mitch put up a couple of empty calorie assists, I knew they would be eating crow once the Leafs meet Florida. They prayed hard for Tampa to beat Florida but their prayers were never answered. You really hate to see it.
Hate seeing it...for sure.

Stanley Cup Champ Rantanen got 12 x 8 in Dallas. 96 million. Unless the Leafs trade his rights, Marner can only sign 7. He shouldn’t be making more than Rantanen.
Leafs were willing to pay one of them $13.5x8. Somebody might pay Marner more than Rantanen. He'll Tre paid 88 more than Pasta so anything is possible. I am hoping he gets max money since he can give his hard working PR crew juicy bonuses.

I’m sure Dubas is checking his couch for any and all loose change at the moment.

Honestly, if I am one of those guys here that truly seems like a MM fan instead of Leafs fan.

I would really cheer MM on another team instead of on the Leafs. Like how can anyone still think that the current Core 5 can get it done collectively in the playoffs. Even if it ends up trading away two of AM, Reilly and Willie then resign MM. I still don’t think that’s good enough.

Most teams are lucky to have 1 or 2 players on their level and do ok. I think we'd be just fine.

Marner needs to go to change the character of this team. He and Matthews + Nylander are feeding defeat off of eachother.

Need change and we need the cap space.

So Marner produced less offense than 4th liners Holmberg, Lorentz and old guy Patches? Well pretty much less than any other forward? Lol

In 2019 Berskshire said Marner was overrated 5v5 and that Matthews, Tavares and Nylander were substantially higher than him overall in scoring chance generating plays.

That was before Marners 11 million cap.

Berkshire was 100% right.

Im blown away that Marner is so greedy that he needs more than 13.5x8... he cant even settle for a little less than Draisaitl on Edmonton? Wherever he goes the pressure of a 14million contract will be enormous and he will be over that teams news if he doesnt live up to it.

Im shocked he would take the risk that he goes somewhere without Matthews and Nylander and Knies... and loses out on setting Maple Leaf records (because of rhe talent hes surrounded by), and loses out possibly being on legends row (which he doesnt deserve anyways).

Shocking the level of grees at play.

I really hope Toronto doesnt even plan to negotiate with him, because its gonna be very bad for him unless he goes to Colorado to ride Mackinnons coat tails or maybe Eichels coat tails in Vegas. OR maybe Kaprizov in Minnesota. But if Colorado didnt want Rantanen, surely they dont was Marner for even more!

Exactly. Leafs management should just offer him a dirt cheap contract (e.g. $4 million or less). It might seem like the middle finger to Marner's camp, but if he produces like a bottom-6 forward in the playoffs, he should be treated like one. If he doesn't take it, let him walk...

Without Marner who knows if we even make the playoffs.

Without much of a future from a prospect and pick standpoint, how in the world are we going to be any better?

If you don’t re-sign him, we are a worse team. No doubt. If you do, we have a CHANCE to be a better team.

Sometimes it feels like people forget just how miserable this franchise was before this era. No talent at all and no pipeline. We are talking about one of the most talented players in franchise history and we want to toss it away because winning is hard and the franchise failed to set us up properly.

Seems kinda crazy to me. People thought Ovechkin didn’t have what it takes until they won. Now it’s a silly take. We are such a dramatic fan base that we are so ready to ditch a 100 point player. Good luck overcoming this when it happens. We will just fall into more of a mess.

When games get tight, the compete level isn't there with Marner, he's not about to find a new gear at this point. He is what he is. He plays like a third liner in the playoffs.

You act like if he wasn't here the Leafs would not do anything with $11 million in cap space, or $14 million next year. That likely gets you two second line scorers. If they have 50 points each, that'll more than cover for Marner.

There is absolutely no correlation or similarity between Ovechkin's game and compete level, and Marner's, none.

If Matthews and Nylander can’t carry the team without Marner then trade both now.

Also many people say Matthews doesn’t have what it takes and he is more Ovi than Marner is. Ovi is one guy and Washington didn’t have Marner. So 9 years later, let’s put something different around Matthews and see where we go.

How can anyone think this when we still got Matthews, Nylander and Knies on the roster. Like what? The over rating of Marner is getting to levels that are just getting a bit ridiculous. Using Ovechkin as an example is not the comparison you want to make because the only time they had playoff success 1 time and it was when they won the cup. We were sold they'd be more like a Chicago, not Washington.

It’s not overrating to simply put that hes a 100 point player. Not having him could change the whole dynamic of the team for the worse.

There are a number of up and coming teams in the conference. Knocking this team down a peg could hurt their chances at the playoffs.

Marner is without a doubt an incredible talent. Losing him would be a serious blow.

Free agent class is on the weaker side. Almost empty cupboard. How exactly do we improve?

We still got a 100 point player in Matthews who is considered a Selke level defensive player as well. Nylander could easily be a 100 point player playing on that 1st line consistently with Matthews and Knies.

People could say it's a weak FA class but we don't need all the high end talents. We just need guys who can provide some secondary scoring and help the team become the hard forechecking team they want to be who can maintain possession in the offensive zone, especially during the playoffs.

15 other teams made the playoffs without MM since MM been in the league.

Is making the playoffs the end goal for this team.

You guys kept talking about 100pts player MM.
The player who plays in MM spot will not get 100pts but I am pretty sure he can get 70pts. Thus that’s a 30pts drop. And I am pretty sure AM, Knies, Willie, Domi, McMann and JT or his replacement can all get 5more points than last season, esp knowing AM had a down year.

I'd rather the 14 mill and either

Ekblad+Marchand or Bennet+Marchand+Tavares

Berube won with Tarasenko/O Rielly/Parayko/Petro, this team would arguably have better depth than them.

The problem with Marner isn't even "signing him" so much as the cost, you cannot win (as proven by his record in the playoffs) with a player that should be paid 8-10 mill making so much money.

Ovechkin played with 2 borderline HOFs his entire career, this Leafs core may legit have 4 if Tavares can be decent a few more years and if Willie keeps up his play, they did nothing with them because they are all the same player; soft/skill guys.

Mitch had 9 years, enough is enough. Last year he was treated like a God, this year he's leaking every bad occurrence over those 9 years to try and make Leafs fans look bad.

At the end of the day he won 2 more playoff series than Kessel/Phaneuf and co.
