Player Discussion Mitch Marner Part Infinity

I think management and fans are going to feel worlds apart. The leafs lost to a great panthers team that'll probably cruise to another finals.

I don't think management wants to let him go. 100 point players don't grow on trees. Only way he doesn't return is if:
1. Marner asks for too much money or wants a full NTC/NMC. Or...
2. Marner wants out.

Who are you guys going to fill his position with; Matt Duchene, Ehlers? Like, I said, I think management and fans are going to feel worlds apart on this 1. You can't make decisions on emotion. You don't have better options out there.
Such a loser mentality to have lmao. There's no clear cut upgrade to this player so the only logical solution is to keep him and status quo, there's no other option!

Maybe get creative and use some critical thinking to change the make up of the team for a different look.

Everyone was saying Panthers over paid for Tkachuk and got worse on paper and look how that ended up.

Yea, Rantanen was a UFA just like Marner is. Again, it's similar value. Its odd you're so insistent on this rhetoric. The Leafs could have got value back for Marner in the name of Rantanen. Now, Marner is going to walk for free.
Either you didn't read my responses to you, or you don't understand English. Good luck!

Do you know the Marner’s or are you just making stuff up?
I know people who know them you can DM if you want.

Chris Johnston said something bad happened after the game and I believe Kyper mentioned fans were berating players in the elevators...we are definitely about to enter another decade of darkness

It really is sad. The title "core 4" is a joke now but on paper, its a ridiculously talented group to have. All in their prime years, high production, made the playoffs after so long, finally won a round. Lots of highs. It will always feel like a "what if" for any one of these 9 years tbh. Aside from 2016 and round 2 against florida last time, i never really felt like we got beat because the other team dominated us. It always felt like the leafs lost to themselves.

Its fun to imagine though. A cup with these 4, kadri, rielly. Mitch would have been beloved. Hometown kid, drafted developed. Then another swedish star and a small town american kid. All 3 of our stars drafted and developed and an established star, someone finally choosing the leafs in free agency, hometown guy tavares signs.

Welp. Maybe in another life.

But also, f*** the "fans" that harass these guys off the ice. And their families. Saying foul shit to a newborn? Thats just sick. At the end of the day, this is a game and its a job to them. We may be passionate and sure special superstar players like sid breathe for the game. But thats not everyone and they have every right to live outside of the game and disconnect from it. Some people really believe players are machines and should be living only for the game. Its completely fine for this to just be a job. In fact, some might call it healthy boundaries.

Not everyone is sid. Thats what makes him special. Thats the exception not the rule.
yeah I agree; I think the worry becomes that its getting toxic again and we'll see players not wanting to play here again.

In a perfect world they manage to resign Marner but without a NTC. Sign him, then trade his ass.
Sign him, announce the trade 3 minutes later. Perfection indeed!
From what I understand Ranta put Leafs on his list he would sign with. But I tend to agree, if Marner wasn't also going to sign up to a Canes extension the thing probably falls through.

I guesss you never know, Canes got themselves into a pretty bizarre situation this year. Does seem very doubtful though.
This is obviously the case. GM's do dumb shit sometimes but no GM is dumb enough to trade 1 playoff run with Ranta for 1 playoff run with Marner.

Not true at all
waaay true , lol

Johnny Mumbles has been living off his 16 year old season in the OHL for the last 20yrs , even today people ignore how pathetic he was and has been in the playoffs and want to re-sign him for 5-6-7m per season .

name recognition goes a long way for some people !

In some bizarre twisted way his declining play (and the removal of the C) has made people pretty well accept he's gonna be terrible every playoffs and as a result he gets far less criticism because of it even though his $11M paycheck didn't go anywhere.

Before we get into any Marner, Matthews or Nylander criticism how about we accept full stop that JT was the worst of the big paid players by a country mile.

Marner needs to go. Its simple as that. He cannot thrive under pressure in Toronto. Great regular season player but horrible in the playoffs. Matthews is driven by Marner unfortunately. Too many giveaways, and is very soft. The 14 million needed to sign him can be leveraged into 2 players which would add depth to the team which desperately needs it.

At least Matthews puts in a sound 200ft game when not scoring. Marner has done nothing for this team in the playoffs which has burdened the team way to often. He should have been traded after his lackluster effort last playoffs in game 7 against Boston.

Needs to go.

I’ve listened pretty intently and by all accounts he has refused to even enter negotiations.

13.5 x8 would be 15.5. X 7. No competitive team is offering that.
Agreed, he may may been able to read the tea leaves. Imagine how much heat he and the Leafs would be getting today of he signed that deal. The Leafs have no clue and can't see past their nose. It is why this team is where it is today. Heard some interesting views on Kyper and Bunkis shows yesterday.

Marner needs to go. Period. Full stop. This core does not work together and never will.

Tavares can go if he wants but unless they can find a #2C to replace him, he probably returns at a good number (Mirtle thinks something like the Tanev deal). Anything more and see you.

If you can turn Marner and Reilly (trade) into Bennett and Ekblad would you?

Cause that is what the Leafs should do. Bring back home proven winners, with grit and toughness. Inject that in this lineup even if you keep Tavares at a discount and you instantly have an improved team.

Knies-Matthews-?????
???? - Bennett - Nylander
McMann - Tavares - ????
Lorentz - Laughton - ???
Holmberg

OEL - Ekblad
McCabe - Tanev
Benoit - Carlo
Myers

Trade Domi, Robertson, Kampf and Jarnkrok for picks/prospects

Everyone so butt hurt about losing Marner and I don't get it.

13m per year for 7 assists in 20 games 5-6-7 is not something to cry over.

It's called being cap efficient.

I'm just sticking to the facts - we could have had Rantanen for Marner. Now, we're demanding one of our star franchise players, who's valued as high as a Rantanen, to walk freely - not even trade him and get value back - just walk away for free.

It's fundamentally poor decision making by our management again, it's a repeating trend in Leafs history. And I don't want to make another poor decision based on emotion. It is what it is, and if it doesn't work out again at least we can trade Marner - he has a new kid - I'm sure he's not ready to uproot himself at this moment. Hopefully he never needs to and we just win.

I'm still advocating for changes, just for something that gets equal value back.

I just saw Mitch’s melt down I love it I just wish he did it at the beginning of the game might have actually made a difference but that’s the shit we needed from him for years

Phony as phony can be. Looking forward to watching him play elsewhere. As Kadri tweeted last week. You can't let the dogs go. Clearly a message to the idiots selling jerseys. Marner is a p***y.

If Rantanen wins the Conn Smythe, I have a hard time seeing a legitimate contender going to $13.5-$15.5 million to add Marner knowing Dallas is getting a warhorse at millions below My Little
Pony. Because you can't hide him behind your big dogs at that price tag.

Marner's next step post Toronto (not our problem) is basically going to be a choice between massive money and winning because I think the only teams that can offer him huge cash are going to be bubble playoff and late rebuilders who can afford the splash.

Of the final 8. You need a team that has cap space, and will give SB, is competitive. Has a C to play with. Then you look at being close to family etc who are here

1.) Vegas- doesn’t have cap. Does have a need. Will make big swings. Competitive. Low tax market. Far from family. Very possible.
2.) Edmonton. Crazy market. No room. Unlikely
3.) Winnipeg. Would have need but unlikely
4.) Dallas. No room
5.) Florida. No room
6.) Washington. Replaces ovy? Friends with strome. But they are a bubble team that got hot. Would he really go to play with strome?
7.) Carolina. Has a need. Will they pay sb? He already turned them down.

I guess Washington/vegas/

It’s about losing the asset for nothing.

1.) realistically he could/should be the hometown hero who leads the team in all time scoring. It’s a great story. His lack of success, his agent/family actions started it. But fans have been relentless. It’s probably time to move on.
2.) everyone should have recognized that last year. What could he possibly learn now that he didn’t know last year? He should have taken the summer , told the leafs where he wanted to go and took a trade.
3.) now there aren’t realistic options to replace him.
The team is still floundering. Who are ton going to get?

They could have flipped assets for someone. Like rantanen.

Just a disaster.
The bottom line is, in most cities a player like Marner would be loved.

Many star players lose in round 1/2
The sens took like 8 years to make the playoffs. They never even got to 7

The caps/avs only got passed round one once.
The wild have never even got passed round one in 8 tries.

But they all want their stars back.

That was not phony he really snapped I just wish he hit that point at the beginning of the game might have willed the boys to a victory I’m hard on him but I honestly loved to see it just too late

If you're going to ignore what I said, why bother responding?

He should have been yelling at himself to wake up, not his teammates. Such a loser.

Maybe Hes only capable of playing solid defence and passing……. It’s his cap hit that really betrays him honestly

Guy should try to lead by example before cussing and calling other players out. So should Matthews. This M&M pair is embarrassing
He’s not a leader though his agent and dummy dubas put him in a position he should have never been in if we’re being honest nothing about him screamed a leader but the cap hit he got
